The Red Cross provides them with a hotel room to stay in and also give them vouchers to go and get clothes and food. Soooo maybe you should just give it up.

I bet there was MORE that was asked for than just clothing to get them through the weekend.. Trust me.. I know

I do know my facts. It is unfortunate that you don't. Yes, the Red Cross was called in. However, they give a voucher for the hotel, three nights to be exact. They don't give a voucher for clothing, medicine and supplies until they next day. The rationing was that the family needed to regroup and also the Red Cross has to go over expenses with the family. They don't just had vouchers out. Guess you didn't realize this especially since you weren't there. Insurance doesn't just hand over a check either. Adjusters are called in and that doesn't happen immediately. This fire was on Friday evening. Insurance couldn't be dispatched. They had a need. They had wet clothes, no shoes and small children. The SC was called and they refused to give them a thing not even the children. Also, might be worth mentioning again, the family had nothing as it was all lost, including billfolds and wallets. They couldn't access their money. So you need to pick up the phone and dial them up tomorrow and ask what their policy is regarding a fire situation like this because I already know. They denied this family in this situation. Again, I will state..I will not ever help SC, as they didn't help this family in their time of need.We weren't asking the SC for money or anything just a change of dry clothes, especially for the little ones who had already been traumatized by watching their house burn. Yes, the family would receive insurance and help from Red Cross(Thank God0 but at that time the SC turned their back. Soooo maybe you need to give up. I was there, you weren't.

If so, you deny those in need and accuse others of lying....great representation. Give with a gracious heart, huh? The Red Cross does not give cards immediately. The family had to sit down with them the next day. They go over who needs what, medicine and such as what the amount they get is dependent upon several factors. We were able to get them all a change of clothes but certainly didnt come from this organization.

Community Clothing in Church Hill didn't ask questions when they were called. They gave the family clothes and the volunteer prayed with the family, which truly what the family needed. More than the SC ever offered.

I used to volunteer there back when I was in high school and the clothes that are not sold do not go into the trash. When I was there we went through everything and what couldn't be sold was bailed up and sent to 3rd world countries. Also it being a non profit organization, yea some things might be a little pricey but they had to pay their bills somehow and also it is a lot better than buying new items at 4X the price. And it's not even about the money. It's about what it goes for. They are great people and do a lot for the community.

I think overall Shepherds' does a great job in serving the community, but it's unfortunate if they didn't help the family that 'duh' is talking about. They do bale up the unusable clothing and ship it off because I've seen it being loaded on the trucks.
As far as the pricing of the items, although the $$ goes to a good cause I can't rationalize spending an almost new price for used, faded Walmart clothing. I live on a budget - this is why I shop 2nd hand stores for my family's clothing. I think the problem is the pricers don't have accurate guidelines to use in pricing - they just put whatever price on the tag.
Yes, I've experienced a bit of rudeness from a couple of the older ladies at the front. If they're paid employees, that shouldn't be tolerated by the manager.

If your such a good person and friend or family, why didn't you help more? Its not anyones responsibility to help these families, charities do it out of kindness, not because they have to. Family and friends should have stepped up and helped out, then we wouldn't need all these charities. When there was a fire down the street, every person around stopped by and offered clothing, and a little cash to help out the family. These folks must be real winners if they have no one willing to help them period. Oh yea, the red cross thing is a lie. They give you a debit card on the spot, I called and asked the Kingsport folks. They handle this area. Call and ask for yourself.

All chapters of the Red Cross are supposed to use a specific protocol to determine how much relief people qualify for and THEN load the money onto the debit cards. If Kingsport told you otherwise, the national chapter should investigate to ensure there's been no misappropriation of funds. Those protocols are in place to prevent fraud and embezzlement. Glad you shared this info.

Glad you shared this info. You get the debit card on scene BUT the money for relief is NOT loaded on the card until the proper amount of relief is determined. There is no "qualify" for. There is a set amount "per person" in the household. Once all this is determined the Red Cross person will go back to their office, start their paperwork, then load the money on the debit card. The person is told it can be a few hours or the next day the funds will be available. I think the prior poster did not finish what they were trying to convey and I am sure they did not mean what you so quickly implied in a round about way.

My point was this person has to be such an azz if no one from friends to family was willing to help out. How crappy do you have to be , to not have anyone willing to help you after a fire except charities? Thats taking a serious Karma bite in the butt. Be a better person and human, then you would have folks running to help you when your knocked down .

Some of what you all say is true. When there is a fire, volunteers and or staff arrive at the fire as soon as they are called. We then do a damage assessment. Then we talk with the families. We do the paperwork at the scene so we can get the families into a hotel. From that paperwork, we determine how much immediate assistance is needed so the families can go get food and clothing. We can and do load the debit cards on the scene for immediate needs or within 2 hours. I have been to dozens of fires over the 10 years i have been with Red Cross. Most families dont even know what their needs are right when the fire is happening because they are in shock. Most of the fires i have been to, the neighbors are right out there trying to help with clothing, food and blankets . Sometimes they even open up their houses to get the families away from the scene or out of the cold. If this particular family didnt get immediate assistance, there are reasons not being told. We do have to verify who lives in the home, how many people, etc etc. We have to be good stewards of our donated dollars and case work and verification are the way we do it. The next day, we reconnect with the family, if we can find them (alot of times we get bogus phone numbers or addresses to reach them). We then do follow up to see what else they might need and to assist them with any questions they might have. Now, each case and client is different so everyone doesnt get the same exact thing. It is based on needs, not wants. That is how the Red Cross works.

Their case worker was an eldelry gentleman. He was very nice but love his heart, he was hard of hearing and very slow. He did not give them a card the first day, he came to the hotel the next day.
Again, I will say for the final time, SC was called for the IMMEDIATE need of clothes for that moment in time. No one drove anywhere, except for CCC volunteer who brought items to the family.
The family was in shock and didnt want to leave the scene. Imagine yourself in this situation, would you simply walk away.
The individual who called RC, its speaks volumes about you. Did you call SC and ask about this situation? Seems to me, as usual, you have half the story.
The charity does have the right to help whom then desire just as I have the right to support them and their efforts. The SC has done wonderful things, however, in this moment in time they failed with the mission of helping others.
The family was given love and support from ALL their neighbors. They are a great family! However, think a minute...if your neighbors house was burning to the ground....would you have clothes, shoes in every size to clothe them all. Been years since I had a small child in my house, so no I didnt have clothes to fit them. i did have blankets.
I find it strange or fitting, that those who are attacking this situation and defending the SC have such sour attitudes and language. Its suppose to be a CHristian based help ministry. Wonder if they appreciate you having such representation?

I can tell a person posting a bunch of lies though. Why didn't you do more? You whinning causse you didn't get free crap. Thats pitiful. You should be ashamed to be a human. Why didn't you go buy you nieghbors clothes? You oh so helpful and all. You a joke and a loser if you couldn't help a single person make it one day with out charity. There have been a few fires near here over the years. Not one family had to go beg right after a fire for anything. The people around here all went out of thier way to help folks when they were in trouble. You and your friend must be pretty dang sad if you have to beg for stuff a few hours after a fire. I have not been able to get in touch with Anyone managing the sheppards center thing. But so far the three people I have spoke to made it real clear if there is a family in need and with one call to a fire dept handling the fire, they would have been helped , no question. Your full bull. There is more to the story if they got no help from that place. Thats 4 people now plus the red croos person who posted that have confimed your story doesn't check out. You just try to cause a problem because either you got busted or people are sick of you trying to get free stuff to sell for whatever. You better learn to lie better if your going to try and cause issues.

RC worker confirmed what I said. They weren't given a card immediately. RC didnt come out for a couple hours, which is understandable since they had to activate the volunteer who had to get ready to be there. Nothing I have said is a lie, nothing. I wasnt begging for free stuff. I called the first place i THOUGHT would help. They refused...if you talked to 3 people that said they helped, I hate to tell you, you talked to liars.
Funny you are picking a fight over a cause you have never been to or know about. seems that makes you a bully and to a degree, a liar, as well.
I know the situation, the SC worker knows the truth and the RC worker knows the truth but you know the only one who matters that knows the truth is GOD. Guess what.....you fit nowhere in the equation.
Now, having said that, I am done with this.I have spoke the truth as to why I will not support this organization again. It wasnt a scam, it was a large family that needed help if only for a moment.
You can continue to rant but the fact of the matter is your opinion means nothing to me and you lost credibility admitting the you have never been inside SC or do know what they do or dont do. I, however, do know.

With all the druggies and dopers it takes just a little time to check someone out. Apparently your story didn't check out. So you found someone in Church Hill who jumped to give you freebies huh? Good for them. I still say and Am willing to bet there is alot of un said parts to this story. There is no way a charity would leave kids in need with out it, unless there is alot more to this. I would bet the redcross folks wouldn't just up and leave a family alone sitting at a burned out house with no clothes or nothing. Cry all you want to about it. Your story still don't hold water.

In no way is or was the SC responsible for bringing charity to the scene of a fire. If your so called neighbors were so in need they could have gone to the SC and the items would have been there for them to meet their immediate need. Gathering from your post, these individuals DID NOT go to the SC to request assistance as YOU, YOURSELF, called to request assistance for them and wanted DELIVERY. Keep telling more because you are making yourself look really stupid.
