this is to all the preachers who take funerals as an opportunity to get the word out. i went to a funeral last week. the preacher preached for an HOUR! everyone i spoke to was disappointed. i think this is terrible. here, your loved one is laying in a coffin and the preacher is over the coffin yelling. preachers, just say a few nice words about the deceased, have a few songs.don't take this time to tell everyone in the audience that they are going to hell. and must you yell? there are children attending these funerals and this scares them. a funeral should last about 20 mins. a preacher is like every speaker, you talk too long and our minds wonder. there is no reason to say the same thing over and over and over.....

Usually the family members decide on whether they want a funeral service or have a funeral "preached" in the old traditional way. A lot also depends on the wishes of the departed. I don't care for all that yelling either, it does seem to scare the babies but old ways linger. It may be helpful to let everyone know the style of the preacher holding the service before hand.

This is up to that immediate family and their wishes. They apparently know the preachers they are using and that is up to them. Children get used to what we allow them to get used to. If you shield them from everything, chances are they will be scared on through their lives, but if you let them know it is ok and get them used to things they usually adapt and learn to handle more than we give them credit for. Let them know it is ok and what is going on as they experience such things.

Yeah, I think it kinda shows disrespect for the "Guest of Honor" for the preacher to get up there & say little or nothing about him or her, just crank out a std "Hellfar 'n' Brimstone" sermon...But so many of 'em around here do that...

I think the preacher at a funeral should say things to comfort the family through there trying time. I believe everyone already preaches their own sermon daily and that should be enough.

It drives me crazy to have a preacher get up there and say all these wonderful things about the deceased, and you realize he has no clue. Because in reality, the deceased was an very mean person.

I heard God's Word preached to me one day and felt the knock on the door of my heart by Jesus. I was saved that day because I let Jesus into my heart. I have know people that heard Gods Word at funerals and was saved right there, at the funeral. I know one person that was saved at the cemetary, listening to the Word of God. As for children being scared by the yelling of a loud preacher, when a child is brought up in church from an infant, they are not afraid or scared of loud preaching. If you don't want to take my word for it, go to Burem Missionary Baptist Church one Sunday morning and you will see the small ones are not afraid or scared of the loud preaching.

Now as for me, bring Gods Word with you if you're the one that will be conducting my service. My body will lay there, still, quiet, but oh how I will be shouting in Heaven. You see, that is where my Spirit will be. I'm there now, if I've passed away, and I want you to be there too. If just one person is saved at my funeral, it will be worth it to me. Don't even mention my name, what I done or didn't do in this life. I'm nobody without the Lord. Just walk up there. take a deep breath, ask the Lord to guide you and start yelling His Word to everyone in attendance. As for you that are in attendance, please pray that the Lord will save on this day and someone one else will become a child of the Kings because they heard Gods Word at my funeral and listened to that small, still voice.

They typically hold viewings a couple of hours before the service for those of you that don't wish to hear God's word....When is there a more appropraite time? I mean really. It seems like a good time to me. Someone has died....everyone is thinking about death.....people start thinking about their death and that leads to being right with God. I have no doubt that some may go overboard and fail to mention anything about the deceased but I don't feel a funeral is a bad place to say good things about God either.

I think a sermon is ok as long as it's not screamed. I have been to those funerals where you can hear the preacher,(who's sweating bullets)as he shouts, and stomps to accentuate the importance of his words. He could be heard all the way outside in the graveyard and you fully expect the departed to rise up simply because the volume and the energy in the church is so intense. I have seen family members pass out, probably due to lack of breathing, that usually tones down the service, but only because they have to lay the person flat on the floor and get a wash cloth. I wonder if Jesus yelled much? John the Baptist yelled, he wasn't whispering in the wilderness.

My grandmother wanted an alter call at her funeral. She was a wonderful christian lady that prayed her way through any situation and she let the Lord lead her through life. She told us to make sure the preacher had an alter call at her funeral, because she knew some people that would attend were not saved. I think you should hear God's word every opportunity that you can. Whether people want to believe it or not, I really think this world is going to end sooner rather than later. Some believe, some don't and all are entitled to their opinions but I just think there are too many terrible things in this world. If the Lord doesn't come back soon, we as a human race are going to eliminate ourselves.
