LOL. I remember the KKK thing in town but never saw her being interviewed on the news. Was her car that old multi-colored Dodge Challenger she had?
I do remember the dresses she wore and don't know if it is true or not but one of the so called "Upper Echelon" ladies had a big fit over Deetsie wearing one her old ball dresses around town that she had donated to charity . To hell with that old woman I say. Deetsie was more upper echelon on her worst day than that woman ever was on her best one!
Yep, she was sitting right on top of that ole Dodge Challenger and swore vengeance upon the white sheeted klan. And yes, they were the same ole ball gowns that were donated. I think it caused quite a stir!!!!:P

Another memory I have of her was one day she was walking down Hwy 66 with a poster with all sorts of stuff written and drawn on it. Well, Jimmy Lawson,((God Rest his soul)) he was patroling that day and he told her she couldn't walk around town with that sign. She told him "that's aaaaourt." ((ART))

I wonder when she died, was she living in her car then and that is what gave her pneumonia???? That is sad, she would be in her 50's by now I'm guessing.

i don't know about that. while there may not be a lot of china white ,mexican brown or tar heroin circulating the area you got something that is very common around here known as hillbilly heroin also known as oxycontin which is pretty much the same thing except in pill form and not made in a bathtub in turkey but a drug factory here in the united states. people do crush it up and shoot it though.

I remember seeing her at Big John's not long before she died, & she was almosr SCARY looking. She was emaciated, had sores/scars on her face, & just generally looked like death warmed over. Most of her teeth looked to be missing in action as well. Pneumonia might have been what got her, but I'm sure she had lots of other things wrong w/her.

Yeah I remember those pictures she used to carry around town. As far as living in her car when she died I don't think so. That car she had was back in the 90's wasn't it and I don't think I ever saw her with a car after that particular time period. I could be wrong though as All I ever really heard about the situation when she died was that she had died of pneumonia.

It was sad as you said and I remember when she died one of those two stores across from Food City plaza on main street,I can't remember which one it was, put on their lighted sign out by the street "Deetsie, you will be missed"

Deetsy was definately a loving person, and was so full of life... alot of ppl made fun of her and i hated that... the memory i have of her is when i was in J & W and she came in to buy a pack of smokes.. i let her in front of me, and the cashier took her money while me and deetsy talked abou thow hot it was outside. and as soon as deetsy turned to leave the store .. the cashier took out a can of lysol and sprayed the counter and the air... of course i gave her a sharp look and just tossed my things on the counter and walked out ! I think ppl should really think before they take actions on judging other ppl. you never know what times you will have to face in this world.
RIP Deetsy :) And Thanks for all the great Memories :)

this has been one of the best topix i have read on here in a while, instead of bashing and smashing it makes you feel good inside to know there are decent caring people still living in rogersville! I also remember Deetsi, god rest her soul, she never hurt a soul in this town, but yet we all looked forward to coming to town to see what she was wearing that day, i know i did..I'm just so happy to know we have some real feeling caring people left!

and just how do you know she was a prostitute, were you a customer?
Deetsie came in to a place I worked almost daily, and she was not crazy! eccentric, but very well spoken, very well educated, and extremely well mannered. She craved attention, and she loved the way people reacted to her outlandish actions.
Janice was very talented, she could hold up 2 signs, dance, bounce a ball, and read a book all at the same time while never missing a male drive by!
Do you really believe that heroin is not available in Rogersville? A long time ago I lived in Rogersville during my early and mid teens and I saw just about every kind of drug you could imagine! I can only imagine what the kids in that town are into now

Deetsie Dawn what's that flower you have on could it be a faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say he was meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky
She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her baby
All the folks around Rogersville say she's crazy
Cause she walks downtown with a Boombox in her hand
Lookin' for a mysterious dark haired man
In her younger days they called her Deetsie Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever had laid eyes upon
But a man of low degree stood by her side promised her he'd take her for his bride
Delta Dawn what's that flower...
Delta Dawn what's that flower...
Delta Dawn
RIP Deetsie, you brought character to this bland little town.
That was absolutly beautiful!!

She sounded like a very interesting woman. I wonder what happened to her that made her the way she ended up? Did she have any children was she ever married? Surely she had some sort of life before walking the streets of Rogersville.

As far as I remember I don't think she ever married. She has one son, who resides a lot of his time in the County Jail, who claims to be a Muslim....he only eats e\certain foods because of his religion. Ok,, she came from a good family here in town, most of whom still live here. I knew her when she was young, and started laying out of school, got sent to Tullahoma school for girls several times, but s my mother says from time to time, " If a child, or young person don't have it, they will find a way to get it," Maybe the reason for her promiscious behavior, who really knows. I do know that there were quiete a few well to do gentlemen in town that rushed out and got tested for certain things when it came out that she had it....HUMMMMM I knew her personally, she always called me by name, even when we stopped at red lights, my kids used to be scared when she would come up and say ****** you got a dollar I can borrow for some smokes?? Then they got used to it...Yeah For her mind, I would say that the drugs got to it, or maybe she had another STD that made her do these things. I have heard of some that do mess with the brain and stuff... May she rest in peace now......

I had signed up awhile back in the early summer but at first was just too lazy to sign in each time and eventually I forgot my sign in details. Got it all ironed out now and while I have never seen a fake Newbaum posting here,I might have just missed it is all.

Well the memory I have of her is not so fond, one time while I was shopping at the shepard's center, she came in and wanted to buy one of their dress's,she only has 3 dollars and they wanted 5.They would not let her have that dress,I felt so sorry for her.The only thing I could think at the time was,"and you call yourself christians?".I would have given her the money myself but I didn't have it either.
I hope you know for sure that is the truth! Janice always got her dresses there, she was on a budget and Shepherd's Corner knew that, they also knew to HOLD ALL dresses in her size and her favorite color. She insisted on paying her own way so she would not have taken your money. She always changed at the store including her shoes and SHE disposed of them herself, right there! Maybe you cam in on the tail end of a conversation and only heard parts of it. Shepherd's Corner are not only Christians they are a GOD THING..they GIVE when they need too, its what CHRIST LIKE PEOPLE DO

She left from here in late teens or early twenties to try and make the big time like cousin ( I think this is right) Dianna Ross. Not in singing though, Idk really what all her talents were besides her art, seems like my family told me acting or something, but she was bbrutally beaten and left for dead in one of the inner cities ...I'm thinking NY, Nj, or Philly I can't remember exactly after that she was never the same. She then became public with her actions I think b/c she was trying to support herself. Soon after she returned home. She always believed people were trying to harm her, and really NO-ONE could convince her otherwise! As to where she was living when she died, someone asked that question earlier in the forum...She was living in a camper that had been donated to her thru one of the grants & programs that Of One Accord Ministries had at the time. She had taken all the glass out of the windows and the doors of it as well because of that same fear of someone trying to harm her. A couple of the volunteers was taken her some Barleygreen that she had asked for and they had helped on that project and saw what she had done and she explained it to them. Yes, her teeth were about gone but she didn't want to loose them all, she kept plastic tied around her tiny little wrist , so when they began to hurt she could pull a piece off and chew on it. She said it makes it feel better, gotta have have my choppers! Miss ya girl...

So sad she had such a tough go of things. What kind of art did she do? Is any of it still around? At least she is in a better place now with no more suffering.

So her real name was Janice Rogers? I don't have many memories of her because I was kinda young at the time, but my mom told me that when Deetsie was younger she was a very talented artist and even spent time in Paris for her art. Does anyone know if that is true?
How did she get her "nickname" as well?
Janice did not spend time in Paris, but she did spend time in New York and California where she was a model for a short time. She got the nickname of Deetsie because she like to dip snuff as a child.

Only speaking the truth RogVegas Citizen as I can tell you are. I also remember her funeral, many tears were shed that evening. Not only for a loss of a friend but b/c only a few had shown up, but the truth is Janice wouldn't have minded.
So many wonderful memories of Janice here, but I have to say that she had one of the largest funerals I had seen in a long time. She had flowers from some of the most prominent people in Rogersville, especially her former "customers" and some of them even showed up at her funeral. I know, I was there and I still visit her family all the time
