The draft was alive and well if you were enlisted, discharged or reserve. Of course they couldn't monitor his mental health and risk loosing another soldier. Iraq will be remembered as a dirty war predicated on Bush,Cheney and Rumsfelds lies.

Too bad someone didn't come along and offer him a joint. Cannabis is probably the most effective medication for ptsd and serious anger issues - far less addictive and damaging than the paxil-prozac and opiate drugs.

What's really disgusting is that the military wanted to ship him back - we should never have gone into Iraq, and at most should have left when Saddam was captured - now, the only reason these soldiers are being sacrificed is so Exxon and Chevron can get their greedy hands on the oil concessions.

So going AWOL and committing hari-kiri like a WW2 Japanese soldier makes somebody eligible for a hard to get plot in Arlington National Cemetary? Wasn't that place supposed to be reserved for the war heroes and other big shots?

What does being Muslim have to do with it? There is not a religious war going on over there, if you believe that then you are mistaken. At the most its a tribal war that uses religion to support their causes; much like we do here.

By "treatment" I wonder if they put this man on anti-depressives like Paxil. Those drugs are awful and if he was on those I hope the family sues the drug manufacturer.

As a mom of two US Soldiers, I pray for all of our soldiers safety and well-being. War is a horrible thing. Soldiers have to see and do things that will impact their lives forever. I am grateful to those who support our soldiers in a positive way... a handshake, a thank you, support-organizations that support our deployed soldiers. When my son have been home on leave here in Santa Cruz County, I am amazed how gracious, grateful and kind people are to them. You ave no idea what that means to them. Thank you~

This is both immensely heart breaking and horribly shameful - the shame is on the military for failing our soldiers. My heart goes out to Roy's family

How can anyone use the innocent death of a conflicted soldier who was searching for some peace as a way to further their political agenda? How can they try and smear this man's name with innuendo in order to advance their personal agenda yet do it with a clean mind. That's what sick and depraved partisianship does!

The shame is all of ours for allowing the war to start. We should have been 10s of millions in the streets protesting to work harder to find a diplomatic solution. These kinds of sad stories are heartbreaking but the predictable and inevitable result of exposure to the known nightmares of war. Will we ever learn?

Wonder if the writer is THE Kathy Kelly seeking peace in the middle east? BUT this title could/should be: SOLDIER KILSS SELF AFTER WITNESSING HORRORS OF WAR.
How could this possibly be termed in a way that "he couldn't manage himself" and "take responsibility" to remain calm under pressure?
Not only did he take himself out of the god awful loop of having to relive what he had already witnessed, he took time to try to convince others of these horrors and to find ways to end this obscene war. And made plans to seek help for his family, along with being sure his body would not be found by children. This was a thinking man, who could see beyond his own personal problems, somehow, but also recognized he was damaged forever by this war.

This young man deserves a spot in Arlington. He entered the military a healthy young man and ended up broken-physically and emotionally. More and more studies are showing that concussive damage to brains from IEDs is responsible for depression and ptsd in soldiers. No matter how we feel about the war, there is no excuse for injured soldiers receiving substandard care when they return.

The Military needs to do a better job at "decompressing" these guys. Here is another article about a soldier killing 5 of his comrades recently.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/world/middl...

The memory of trying to reattach my Captains severed head would be enough to drive me nuts. I wonder if Roy Mason and other soldiers have misdirected anger. They don't know who and what to hate. They are angry at everything from Iraqis to the military to the peace movement.

I don't know? I would be confused, and be full of hate and anger. The military brain washes soldiers to hate the enemy. When there is no enemy left that hate has to go somewhere.

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Leo

Why are you still fighting, Leo? Everyone else went home a long time ago, but you're still here pounding your fists on the table. Although you don't want to admit it, accepting defeat may be your most practical option at this point. Sometimes it's just easier to move on than to keep up the fight. When you're forced to restructure, at least you have a chance to redefine. YouÕl get the opportunity to start with a clean slate, so use it to your advantage.
