Life in prison for Ortiz would be more than appropriate for the three deaths he has caused. Not only has he taken these three lives but he has forever altered the lives of the remaining family members and friends of the victims through his own ignorant selfish actions.

He swerved into the emergency lane to avoid another car? He was either really drunk or just downright stupid. They should throw this guy in jail for a very long time.

When are they going to come up with a way to prevent these idiot drivers from being on the roads? Ticketing clearly doesn't solve the problem. Suspended or revoked licences don't work, because people drive without them.

The technology has to be there that they could create some way that cars require a valid driver's license to start them up. Create a national database for driver's licenses instead of leaving it to the states. Then put microchips in our DLs and if they aren't activated you cannot start your car.

Figure something out! I'm sick of idiots on the road.

Put this guy away. If not he will be out there driving crazy again.
What a way for the other family members to come upon this accident. They will always relive this moment.

This man should be thrown under the jail for the rest of his life. Passing a car in the emergency lane. What was the hurry. Maybe he should be put in a nissan and a truck hit him but that would be to easy.

Actually the article says to "pass" a car not "avoid" a car - this clown was just in a hurry...at least he didn't get the chance to drive off afterwards which seems to be happening a lot anymore. Not to hijack the thread but what is up with the 3 family members, none of which share the same last name it seems ?

My heart goes out to that family, as for ortiz.....well I know this is radical, but if he was drunk,he should die...period!,I think a great deterrent to drunk driving would be to make cops judge ,and executioner in these cases, when the find a drunk that has caused severe injury or death, devise a blood alcohol test that is foolproof, that can be administered in the field, make the officer have several citizen witness, and when proven that the driver was drunk, execute them, and leave their body lie on the side of the road with a sign ,as a warning to other drunk drivers...barbaric?,well ask yourself how barbaric it was for an innocent family to be wiped out?

This is why police need to crack down on aggressive driving. Aggressive driving kills. Don't complain that the police should be off catching "real criminals" instead. These are real criminals who kill people and leave many others severely injured.

Emergency lanes are for people that have EMERGENCIES, not for waiting for relatives to go to the beach! TV shows warn all the time to use these lanes ONLY if you have no other choice. This was a terrible thing to happen but when living in the jungle like we do here in Central Florida, you must be aware at all times.

The guy's last name was Rodriguez, the woman Dieppa, and the child Suarez. Strange.

Wonder if Carlos Ortiz is a legal resident..........

As someone who does not drink that garbage I am all for it. Tired of seeing innocent people harmed because of alcohol.

But this is America, Land of the Greed, and there is no way the alcohol industry would ever allow it. heck, even the founder of MADD sold out to the alcohol industry!

Alcohol isn't "garbage" just because some idiots choose to drink and then drive - what are you proposing, that we go back to the age of prohibition? Because we all know that was one of the most brilliant ideas of all time

BTW, What the hell do the names of the family have to do with this tragic loss? You don't know their situation; they could have adopted, etc. Leave it alone about the names already...

A sad story. Ortiz was an agressive driver, yes, but I feel being charged with 3 counts of vehicular homicide is a worthy punishment. IF he can afford the bond, he faces a looong jail sentence. I think every one of us at some point in our lives has driven less than perfectly.'Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone.' People make mistakes.

Weird none of them have the same last name, but it does cost $$$ to change one's name. She probably had the child by a Suarez, then married Rodriguez but kept her last name.

hey Genius, If they adopted the child it would have the SAME last name not a different one BUT I do agree with you, the dynamics of a family doesn't rest solely on matching last names but in their relationship solely to each other, maybe it was a woman with a child from a previous relationship with a boyfriend who she's not married to does that make them less of a family... NO, of course not.
My Condolences to this family.

Why are the last names of the victims cause for this silly dribble? Who cares?!? We should be focused on what the story is really about - 3 lives were lost due to someone else's total disregard for anyone, other than his own life.
My sincerest condolences go out to the family.

Horrifying....sad...and the driver of the truck should be charged. Passing like that in the emergency lane, what the hell was he thinking! Charge him on all counts and take away his license if not for life for years!!!!! Maybe then he will realize what he did. So sad. Blessings to the family. God rest their souls in peace.
