Nice thing about scooters is that you can get a brand new one for about $700 bucks.

If I lived in a city, it'd be a terrific way to get around town. Parking would never be a hassle again.

Serious question: Do you need a license to operate a moped/scooter in GR?
|
|
Not if it is under 50cc's. Anything over has to be registered, licensed, insured etc., as a motorcycle. |

Last I knew, you just had to be 18 to operate one. But that was years ago. The larger ones that go 55, I believe you need a license for. It's what the drunk drivers used to ride when they lost their license. But the laws may have changed since then. |

Hey woman! You had better be resting well you are typing or I will come over and hurt you! LOL Shouldn't you be off in a drug induced LaLa land right now??? |
Yes you do need a license to operate a moped. People as young as 15 can get a special moped license however if you are of driving age your regular operators license will suffice. Keep in mind people under 19 years of age must wear a helmet while riding and a person shall not ride more than one person per moped even if the moped is designed for two. If your michigan drivers license is suspended/revoked/denied or so on you may NOT operate a moped in Michigan. The "drunks" that a seperate poster referred to can (and a lot of times do) get cited/arrested for driving on a suspended license as well as receive more operating while intox. charges if they are drunk again. |

1 I also think that the mopeds that don't go over 35 mph should be prohibited in areas where the speed limit is higher. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been stuck for miles behind one going 35 in a 50. It gets frustrating. On a side note... I'm getting on a soap box and venting now... those riding motorcycles have really scared and ticked me off lately. They continually complain that vehicles need to watch out for them, yet they dodge in and out of traffic making 3rd lanes that don't exist (in between 2 other lanes) or passing on the shoulder. I'm all for watching out for motorcycles... but they need to watch out for themselves and not be doing stupid (very dangerous)stuff like that! |

2 I think that if a person does not want to wear a helmet that is his/her own problem. If they get hurt, perhaps they will wear one next time they get on a moped. |

1 Those new to riding mo-peds should take classes for defensive operation on the streets... Thirdly..."making their own lanes on motorcycles" that is called lane splitting and is leagal in many states...not Michigan. a single vehicle lane contains three lanes to a motorcyclist...all used for different reasons and all ours to use... Ok that all being said. I choose to wear a full faced helmet and armored jacket amoungst other gear. When I cut in and out of traffic I am avoiding cages or trying to fine "a hole" in which to ride. You may also see me swerving from side to side near intersections or when you are joining my lane...that's my point maybe you'll see me... Thank you for watching out for motorcycles. You think that we are hard to see...mopeds are even smaller visual targets and more bound to bounce from sidewalks to roads like bicycles. But if you are driving with your head up...looking down range and not at your hood orniments you'll be able to see them too. Also it helps if your mind is on driving so hang up your phone...oh, hands free devices are not a saftey improvement, you are still as impaired as a drunk driver when you use any phone and drive. period...there is my rant... Have a good day |

Got a scooter, got a helmet, got 97 mpg, don't go on the highway except to cross it because if you plan ahead, you shouldn't have to. I usually stay to the side of the road and let you "BIG" guys pass as soon as I can.

1 Both alot of fun to ride but you don't want your friends to catch you on either one of them. |

One of the things that wasn't clearly stated in this article is that scooters larger than 50 cc's (and they get as big as 650cc) are required to follow the same laws as motorcycle (cycle endoresement, plates, insurance, helmet). My 250cc scooter easily does 65mph, of course I'm not getting nearly the gas milage of a 50cc scooter either.
Dealers have told me that they can't keep scooters (big or small) in stock--if they can get them at all. |

1 Right on with your comments. I'm tired of driving in a 45 mph zone and someone on a stupid moped going 30 mph, at best, is holding up a line of traffic. The fact that they don't have to wear a helment or register these things is ridiculous. Everyone pushes for people riding a pedal bike to wear a helmet but these idiots get on their scooters, hit the road with no helmet and think it's just great. If the state wants to help generate some cash for the roads then they should require all these scooters to have registration and insurance just like anything else that legally drives on the road. On the motorcycles, spot on again. I don't know how many times you see a couple of motorcycles going down the road and they think they have to be next to each other or they can't function. You get one driver hugging the shoulder and the other is driving right on the center lane. Another example that I just witnessed was a group of motorcycles (about 12) coming to a stop light and instead of getting into the right turn lane like everyone else, they send one motorcycle around the lane and "park" in front of the first person ready to turn right, hold them and everyone behind them at a standstill while all the rest of the bikes swerve into the left lane, go around all the cars being held up and turn right, without stopping for the red light and then the person holding everyone up follows in behind them. I was in the opposite direction watching this and couldn't believe it. Had I been the one being held up with the motorcycle in front of me I would have, without a doubt, literally just pushed this idiot aside and got in front of every one of them. Alot, not all, of these bikers think they own the road and have a right to stop traffic so their pack of bikes can still be together. God forbid they get separated by a few feet. |
