This is a really good point, she should see more time because it wasn't just the theft of the money but a breach of trust. Not to mention the lies she probably told during the investigation. Why only one year, she stole from a bank? When a bank robber goes in and only get half of that money they get 12 to 15 years. Does this make sense?

I worked for a bank for years, and we always said it was really, really, easy to steal from the bank--just nearly impossible not to get caught. Sad situation for the family especially--don't know what the 'extenuating' circumstances were, but sad just the same.

Gentle Taz, great point! But politicians love to play the tough on crime roll and they pull the wool over the public's eyes every election!
MChamberlain, get a clue, read the national news someday! Judges are making an examples out of most every white collar crime they get their hands on. Sending a guy wearing tie to prison makes headlines and judges like nothing more than seeing their name in print with a tag line on how tough they are! Not to mention, the over zealous prosecutors willing to prosecute any high profile complaint for another notch in their belt. While the wanna be gangster street thug with a rap sheet a mile long is given another slap on the wrist. |

Thank you for your nice words, as a relative of this lady it is nice to know that someone out there understands that there is a good side to her! I know she made a HUGE mistake and will have to live with the consequences forever and that it was the wrong thing to do..but I guess it shows what some will do to keep their families sheltered.

I do have a clue. Until you live it, don't make assumptions. I worked for a company that was bankrupted by white collar criminals. One of the 3 people got 3 years in prison and the other 2 got nothing. These people didn't even pay out the withholding taxes or child support that was deducted from our paychecks. The guys who paid the child support got to pay it again, because it doesn't matter if the employer keeps the money, he is still responsible for paying the child support. Our paychecks bounced, checks to vendors bounced, our customers were sent product that was not complete. Documents were falsified to qualify for a large loan. Out of several counts of wire fraud, one of the perpetrators was allowed to plead down to one count and the other 2 weren't even charged. It wouldn't even be worth it to sue them for what we lost; they have no visible assets. Just because there are a few high profile cases, doesn't mean that all white collar crime has consequences. Most of those people commiting the fraud see everything disappear in a bankruptcy while the victims just sit there shaking their heads asking, "What just happened here?". |
