There is no reason for gay marriage. Civil unions covered it all. It's sad that our legislature does not support the majority of the people in Vermont.

I don't understand what makes people think the majority of VTers are against this...because the majority of people on here (locals at least) are? Let's hope to God that the people on this forum constantly aren't a true representation of our state. Travel outside our little county (and hopefully much farther than that as well) and you will see that the majority of VTers have the "live and let live" philosophy.

James, I don't want to see straight PDA's either. Keep it discreet no matter who you're doing it with or go get a room. Unless you're Brangelina I suppose - then it would be tolerable :)

Laurie, if "civil unions covered it all" than maybe you'd be willing to have one instead of a marriage. I didn't think so.

Congratulations to all VTers on equality for all.

Now let's move on to solve some other problems... like these damn third generation high school dropout, welfare as a career freeloaders that I just wrote a hefty check to the IRS to support.

Well, James and RV, if you look outside your little box you will see that you don't speak for all Vermonters, so don't assume that you do. Remember what assuming does...now that we are equals, we can all get on with our own lives. Have a nice one!

I don't know if this individual was serious or not, but I just thought I should warn everyone just in case. There is a poster called "Enoch Speaks" on "Thank God for Prop 8" that warns about extremists groups getting violent in light of legalization of SSM in Vermont or Iowa. I don't know if he was just blowing off stem and claims not to be directly involved, but please everyone BE VERY CAREFUL about posting personal information and maybe exercise caution when walking home at night and things of that nature. Please don't respond with any violence directed at him as I don't have any proof of his direct involvement nor know if it was just a veiled threat, but wanted to know how to contact topix authorities in addition to flagging a post, just in case there is some truth. Does anyone know how to do that? Please both sides NO VIOLENCE. This should be a time to celebrate.

Here is his post;

"Congradulation on your successes in Vermont and Iowa;"

"However you may have opened a door which may never be closed because now the extremists are joining the battle and it is going to get down-right nasty."

"Since the next phase of your struggle is about to become somewhat nasty I recuse myself from further disscussions."

"I cannot be a part of violent actions against any human being."

Too bad it didn't make it to a vote by Vermonters then we would have all known the will of the people! You will soon see the actual will of the voters but you all probably don't care which politicians will suffer now that you got what you wanted! The politicians who defended your cause deserve better than that but they knew what they were getting into when they signed on!

Hey, that's a lie, not an opinion, you bigot-rube.

Civil unions don't remain in force when traveling or moving abroad or to another state without them. Civil unions don't confer the right not to testify against your partner, or allow federal inheritance tax benefits, income tax benefits or social security benefits, to name just a few things.

Tough luck for you homophobes that we increasingly won't be treated as less than like in "the good ol days." You ignorant bigot.

This legislation does not address the inequalities espoused by proponents. Regardless of whether the term marriage is applied, federal benefits will still be denied to same sex couples in Vermont. And states that do not recognize same sex marriage or civil unions will also deny state rights and responsibilities to same sex couples married in Vermont. This bill will not change that fact.

Gay people can't read either! Thats really why I vetoed it!

Your denying dismissal of the mid and long term significance of the four states getting marriage equality must be why all the talibangelicals and homophobes are so upset about these four states allowing marriage equality.

The trend is our friend, not yours, Jethro-liar.
