Full story: TwinCities.com

When it comes to keeping lead-bullet fragments out of venison, some Minnesota deer processors are doing a better job than others, according to a Minnesota Department of Agriculture study obtained Friday by the ...

I feel that the Pionner Press stories are blowing this situation out of proportion. Articles over the past few weeks have been alarmist by emphasizing that 'even the smallest amount of lead' is dangerous. As though the meat should be thrown away and that it is a public health hazard. The Press is raising an alarm by saying there is lead in the meat, but they do NOT say how much and they do not say - for the amounts actually being found - that it exists at a level dangerous to people.

People have been eating deer for over a century. When is the last time a hunter died of lead poisoning? Besides, if you actually take the time to chew your food, your teeth usually provide a good indicator if there are any small bits of lead remaining in the meat. PP, find a story worth raising the alarm about..

I think they should do another test to see how much lead is in ground beef from the same processors. I'm betting it is about the same as for the venison.

More of the needy people will choke to death on a piece of Meat, than will ever die from ingesting Lead Dust!

Can we get the Government "Experts" away from the Venison, and onto real problems like "Death from Nut Allergies" or some other "Critical" issue.

Heck...Toxic shock from Tampon use is statisticaly more deadly than "Lead Dust!

We need a "New" Government Directorate.....Plug Patrol Agency

this is food that is given away for free to the people who need it and it has not been shown to cause a problem. Leave it to the nanny state to take 16000 pounds of meat from people who need it because of a problem we don't have.

Way to go Libs keep MN safe.

The story doesn't say anything at all about people getting sick, in fact it specificially says there is no proof that anyone has gotten sick. All it says is that lead was found in a percentage of packages.

The 'I've eaten it for 50 years' arguement doesn't hold water. Have you ever been tested for lead? Do you know what the symptoms are?

Go DFL, there are no lead related deaths among hunters ever recorded. Your stupid death wish for humans looks rather sad and pathetic. I suspect you are another in a long line of liberals who who's true anti human feelings are only released when you are safe and anonymous behind your computer screen. You would never have the balls to say something so stupid to anyone's face.

The one thing that has been kept secret about this whole thing is that the processors are being paid BY THE POUND by the DNR! No incentive to trim very carefully, especially the hamburger trimmings. Maximum pounds=maximum profits. Change this policy, and the problem will go away.

If you can use an x-ray to find the lead bits then a person eating the meat will feel the lead in their mouth and spit it out. I suspect we have more to worry about from poorly processed chicken than we do from a few lead fragments in venison.

Good job, Bob!

Shells are cheap.

It takes one shell to kill.

A good hunter practices good shot selection.

From the other comments, it appears that the commentators have got lead on the brain.

Why would you want to kill an innocent animal? I bet you don't eat what you kill. That is a shame and you should feel guilty about that.

Thats all it ever takes me. One shot per deer that I shoot. One was even square between the eyes at about 75 yards.

Gun control is nothing more than controlling your breathing, aiming and gently squeezing the trigger.

Then you process your own deer and clean, clean, clean and then clean it again.

My bro is shooting a new gun with a triaguler shaped barrel and he's getting groups of 7/16 inch at 100 yards. Right out of the box. With that accuracy you can pick the eye you want to hit it in.

BTW better to hit them with a bullet than with a car. Road kill is normally wasted, bullet killed is consumed.
