I live in the area that is being evaluated for this plant and cannot express my unhappiness that a rural area with many family homes will be destroyed for big business. With so many empty industrial parks in both West Point and LaGrange, why choose to destroy the quiet community and ruin the simple way of life many families who wanted to get away from the city and now find it coming and forcing its way into our lives.

What area do you live? |

Judged:
1 - the land requirment is massive - many other factors are considered to determine a suitable location.(Interstate, geology, rail access, water supply, natural gas supply, noise requirments, electricity supply) - WPS is on the way out, people need jobs - local busniess big and smaill is starving. Have you taken the time to drive through down town WP lately? - home values are going down while they have increased across most of America. People need the money! - Schools will improve and grow. - Local contractors will once again flourish. - People will have good paying jobs even at entry level. Have you looked at the poverty level stats of your surroundings? |

What can locals do to show support for Kia and make them feel welcome?

1 We can not be so narrow minded to think of only our self. This is a wonderful opportunity for Georgia. Dee |

a new car plant sounds great , but on the other hand its a bad ideal, who likes living in in a new made detroit! whats next?

Does anyone know what area Kia is considering?

I live in this area and think it's great! I travel an hour to work and hate it! I would love the opportunity to work just around the corner.
WHERE DO I GET AN APPLICATION?? |

I too own a home in the area in question. I think there are probably more feasible places to position a plant of this size but it will be good for the area. It will give those in the area quick and easy access to the interstate and allow for a lot of jobs in the area. I personally won't mind selling if the right buyer approaches.

be weary georgia: detroit was shining star for 50 yrs. until the plants (companies) forsook the people that made them rich. I'm from mich. and an ex-car designer, not kidding, 8 out 10 people work in auto related business. Now, the suburbs are some of the wealthiest in the country with very best schools, detroit is a wasteland, along with flint and grand rapids. once the car companies lay off so will the suppliers and so will the business' that support the suppliers. people are realizing they have no where to turn cause michigan was built on the auto industry. but the shareholders will be happy... -executives make a staring pay of 750,000$ a year with 100-200% bonuses of their yearly salary plus profit sharing, stock options and full tuition reimbursement -middle management make between 95,000$ and 700,000$ a year with a bonus up to 150% of their yearly salary plus profit sharing, stock options and full tuition reimbursement -the average auto worker makes 63,000$ a year with 0 bonus, no stock option and 25% tuition reimbursement. -the south, historically, are not union strong, which makes it a perfect environment for greedy car companies. take a job and a plant for what it's worth, a paycheck! do not think of it as a life or care about it. cause when the shareholders aren't happy, goodbye low level auto workers....... |

I read that Kia is already doing soil testing in West Point. Does anyone know anything about this?

As an un-employed engineer, having once worked in the fastener industry, I hope Georgia gets KIA. FORD just went under and every one job, each had 2.5 other jobs supplying FORD. My fellow workers will have a hard time selling their now older homes to find jobs in other states (if they can), because of the economy. They also will lower the standard of living in the areas they live, because of the reduced wages they will now have because of under-employment.Even though KIA is foreign owned I hope they will be supplied parts "that are American" making more jobs. Our children coming out of college can now use their technical educations here in Georgia, instead of wasting them on underpaid-unskilled labor jobs. I just hope our representatives make KIA pay taxes to Georgia, unlike Nissan in TN. To improve the quality of education and living in GA.

while I hope they do come and create jobs for the people trained in the industry, who got screwed by Billy-bob FORD. you and I both know KIA will not pay taxes in GA, nor will they invest in georgia, the congressmen will make sure of it.... and they will be driving korean cars! they will rape and piledge, and when the time and money is good for their executives, they will lay-off and move to mexico....... they are looking for the cheapest free deal they can find, and will barely pay cost of living. |

I too live in the area under consideration and my husband and I retired to my family homeplace in this rural area to get away from the big city traffic and subdivisions. We have worked hard all of our lives to have a retreat away from the hustle and congestion of city life. My family has already experienced the taking of property when I-85 was built and then Georgia power lines. There are so many areas undeveloped near industrial parks or many acres owned by the governments both state and federal that could be sold to private industry without taking private homes and farms. |
||||
it comes down to which senator and rep.(s) have the most power and money to give to KIA to bring them to their district, then they get to name a road after themselves as well. |
||||
Intersection of Webb Rd and Gabbetville Rd -- between I-85 on the east and the railroad tracks on the west, all the way south to the back side of the West Point Industrial Park. Also back up on the north side of Webb Rd, about 3/4 of the way up to Gabbetville Circle. The property would supposedly displace 28 households. This is second-hand information, but it is from what is normally a very reliable source. |

I can't believe this!!!! Kia has offered to build a billion dollar plant in a area that desperately needs it. How can people be so selfish as to get nit picky about where and how. If this keeps up, Kia will go elsewhere. The world is smaller that you think. It takes a lot of criteria to find the perfect spot. Bottom line....the men with the money choose the spot. Don't mess it up or they will go elsewhere.
