Does anyone have information about the church that at one time was located out on Cottonwood Creek. I think it was a Calvary Baptist, not sure.
i was Baptised out there in the Creek and am looking for any old records. Appreciate your Help. Bob |

Are you speaking of the Cottonwood Creek south of Sweetwater that crosses hiway 70? There was a school and store there at one time? I do not know of a church but have talked to one person who remembers a church a little farther south. If you can give me some dates and anything you remember about the place I will see what I can find out for you. |

Goose: Date would be 1937 0r 38.
A little further South right on the creek was its location. Thanks for the help. |

Bob, Mr Pat Huchins owned the Cottonwood Store and my Dad bought it in about 1963, sold it in 1971. The old School Building was converted into a very nice house, but I'd have to check out my source to find any information on the Church. |

Bob/Goose, I just talked to my Mother, and she only remembers some friends of hers(both deceased) talking about a Church(?) south 5-6 miles of the Union 76 Truck Stop, on Wiggins Road/I-35. but it's been gone a long time. That would make it North-North-west of Lake Trammel. |

Ron: There was a girl I went to school with at Ada that was named Pat Huchins.
At one time we siened minnows at a creek over by Buffalo Gap and sold them for Bait at Lake Trammel. As well as I remmember the Creek ran a few yards behing the Church, We put heets on and were Baptised then went into the Church to Dry Off. Thanks for all the help. |

You're welcome Bob. The late Mr. Pat Hutchins had a daughter named Nelda(about your age), but there are a lot of Hutchins' people around the area. You would not believe Buffalo Gap now. A local Abilene Doctor moved the old Bradshaw Post Office Building into the park and a lot more old buildings, and fixed them up according to their era. Kinda looks like a Town. And they have Family Reunions and a monthly Flea Market there. One of the Families that lived probably close to the Church, last name was Scott(most, Mr. Scott/kids are deceased. Grand-kids still living/around). And the other one was a Bardwell(well known Sweetwater Original Settlers Family). The Cottonwood School/Store was 5 miles south of town, with the creek just on the north side of it. |

We lived right across the road from A j and Bill Scott. Think AJ had a Propane Gas store in Sweetwater. Bob |

Bob, I don't remember Old Mr. Scotts first name, but his kids probably 15-20 years older than you were J.W., Bill, LaRue(girl)all deceased, most buried at the Ranch. They had a Farm/Ranch 5-6 miles south of what is now I-20/Wiggins Road. There used to be a Gulf Oil Refinery(late 30's to 1958) on west Alabama across from the Sweetwater Cemetary. There is a Union 76 Truck Stop now on Wiggins Road and I-20. Hope this is helpful! My parents/Grand-Parents moved to Sweetwater in 1940-41. So some of this is before my time. Ron |

Bob, you are correct it was the Calvary Baptist Church. They held services every other Sunday. I have spoken with a gentleman that also attended there and still lives near the site. He is going to speak with a lady that also attended there and may possibly know where the records are located. He said he would try and talk with her tonight but may be a day or two. He will get back to me as soon as he speaks with her. A.J. Scott is still living and doing well. He no longer has the propane business but still works. I see him often. I will get back to you when I have more information. |
||||
Goose, you probably know my cousin there, he loves to hunt, and has a fantastic Arrow head collection, and I think he used to make the Propane deliveries out of Merkle. And I'm glad you've found some info. for Bob. |
