Can't afford a seat---call Maryland KISS, visit your local Safe Kids or Health Department. There are resources...just like their are resources for people who need food and healthcare for their kids.
Car crashes are the number one killer of our children.
The new law is in line with other states in the mid-atlantic region such as Delaware and Virginia.
Children need someone to be their advocate and to keep them safe, and sometimes it's just not their parents. And yes..."we" end up paying for kids who are severly injured. They can end up in the hospital/rehab centers. Parents quit their jobs to be with their kids--losing their benefits and going on state benefits.
To the poster who survived a roll-over in only a lap belt...I'd say you and your father won the lottery that day. I knew a child who was in a much less severe crash in a lap belt and was killed.
To quote another CPST, "Those who think the laws of physics don't apply to them, soon find out the laws of natural selection do."
Go do some research:

Crash tests are done at 30 mph--relatively slow...but very severe.
Hey Susan - PARENTS, and parents alone, should be the advocate of their children.

Your logic would have us sterelizing parents deemed unfit to raise children. And who would make that decision - someone like you? Maybe our "trustworthy" and "braintrust" of a government?

What a scary world that would be.

Actually I can.

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment refers to the first of several pronouncements in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, stating that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...." Together with the Free Exercise Clause,("...or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"), these two clauses make up what are commonly known as the "religion clauses" of the First Amendment.

No it is not. The governments role is to serve and protect the people, not to dictate their lives. You may argue they are protecting those children, but then you clash with the not dictate their lives belief. Only the liberal mentality believes the minority is more intelligent than the majority. That is dictatorship.

And where exactly in those quotes does it say government should step iin? Are your high that you printed the wrong quotes? I read nothing there to back up your debate.

He had every right to be insulting to a nitwit who answers a debate of government interference in peoples personal lives while acting arrogant but stupidly quoting references to religion. These are two wholely seperate issues. Oh, there a few things in the Constitution and Bill of Rights that can slightly bolster your position, I will grant that (but I wont tell tell you because you are oblivious to them obviously) but you are going to the wrong passage and making yourself look stupid.

Tell me why my child is safe today because he is 8 but only weighs 48 pounds and is 48 inches tall? But yesterday when he was 7 he wasn't safe! What bugs me (besides the government telling me how to parent) is that age doesn't mean much. The guidelines (and they should be guidelines, not law) should tell us the proper height and weight. It has a lot to do with the child's height but that is rarely mentioned.

Buy yourself a small recreational vehical then they can legally bound around the entire vehicle, totally unrestrained. Make sense?
Welcome to Maryland. We'll dispense law as we see fit.

Surf52, I owe you an apology as well.

I was mixed up, by the fact that I was posting in two forums at once and there is really no excuse for such carelessness.

Apology accepted, and I offer an apology for name calling. I should be more mature than that. I was wrong to do that.
