No illegals, no problems from that arena. A concept many have a hard time understanding.

Apathy got us to this point with respect to ILLEGALS.

Apathy got us to the point we are in politics.

Apathy got us an entire platform of welfare entitlement people.

What more are we going to allow apathy to dictate to us before we take our heads out of the sand and take control of our futures?

We should demand that our governor be a leader rather than a political idealogue. Our state is not radical right nor left yet our governor seems to be unable to represent the majority. Polls show that 70% want the driver's license issue solved and she has rejected any compromise offered her by the legislature. She is sacrificing any progress that she could make as a leader to posture as some sort of a hard line conservative. Once again we have a politician that is using the New Mexico Governorship for a stepping stone. New Mexicans deserrve better!
Your dislike for our Governor overshadows your common sense and diminishes from what sense your posts might manifest.

She isn't the problem, the legislature is. THEY allowed it and THEY refuse to fix it either due to partisan politics, stubbornness and/or arrogance. Either way they are the ones not offering any solutions that have one iota of credibility or intelligence. She's doing what the people are asking for, in spite of what the legislature or you claim.

Every day we attempt to address the current issues. We are where we are and we must work our way toward the future. We are not going to change suddenly and we are not going to make progress with "radical" change. It simply does nto work that way. We must accept small successes and work towards a goal with patience and vigilance.

As far as the illegals go we have made HUGE progress in the past few years. There are fewer illegals now that in decades, our border security is MUCH tighter than five years ago and the U.S. side of the border has never been quieter. There are fewer lillegals now than ever. We still have a long way to go but we must celebrate the fact that we have come a LONG WAY in a short time!

Before we get to the point we have "no illegals" we must manage the ones that we DO have. And management is not ignoring the problem or wishing it away. Management is not magically making them dissapear or saying "if they weren't here we would not have a problem". Management is actively ADRESSING THE PROBLEM.

The situation we have gotten ourselves into will require patience and it will not be swept away by any one candidate or any one political beleif. We must accept small steps toward our ideals and expect to compromise. We must remember that this country is filled with people who have the right to believe any damn thing they want. Puritain idealism will never fly in this country.

We can either begin making progress toward a goal or refuse to accept any progress other than the shining ideal in our radical mind's eye. I think that it is time to put away our silly idealism and roll up our sleeves. The problems that we speak of are dissappearing as we post and the issues we are focusing on here seem to not even be a factor in reality...Only in the rarified air of politics.

70% of people disagree with the policies of New Mexico regarding illegals and DL's. They demand reform. They are not getting it. The legislature has offered several solutions and SUsana has rejected them all. She is sacrificing progress and the wishes of the people to posture as a political hard liner.

New Mexico ID's are the focus of abuse worldwide becasue Susana has rejected compromises offered her by our lawmakers that would have solved that problem. The REAL issue of the policy, which is nationa security, has been overshadowed by the POLITICAL aspect of giving illegals driving priveledges in our state.

In my opinion that was not in the interest of security, not in the interest of working with the legislature (who DID compromise to send her the bill), and not in the interest of moving this state in a positive direction.

It seems like "common sense" would be to stop giving them ID's that look just like an American citizen and continue fighting to revoke driving priveleges. We could be half way there but we have NOTHING to show for three attempts. She has rejected any gains she has been offered and is holding out for something she knows she is not going to get (and ups the ante each time so she is certain not to get it).

Why? Where is the benefit to New Mexicans? We could have had compliant ID's today for the money she has spent fighting for a partisan ideal. She seems to not be concerned about all of the bogus NMDL's floating around out there and how the citizens she pretends to represent have suspect documents. Her big concern is driving priveledges for a very small group of illegals that are mostly business owners in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

What about MY concerns as a US Citizen and resident of New Mexico? I personally don't feel that an illegal should have driving priveledges but it really does not affect my life at all. They are going to drive anyway. I don't care what our lawmakers decide about that as it makes no difference in anyone's world that is not focused on the political aspects of it. What matters to me is the validity of my paperwork. My governor has overlooked my REAL concerns in favor of a political objective that will not affect illegal immigration or border security in any way. It will only appease thiose who are afraid of illegals for whatever reason.

Julio, an illegal has no rights. This is the United States of America not the UN. Go back to Mexico and help bring your country out of its 3rd world status. We don't need any illegals here. We only have room for legal immigrants.

This is true if you are a brain-washed Democrat that loved the way Richardson and his Lt Governor screwed up New Mexico. The free-thinking people of NM want to be free of the burden of supporting illegals. This is what Governor Martinez stands for. She wants our state to prosper instead of bein forced into bankrupsy due to having to support the illegals. I only wish that the United States had more governors like Governor Martinez and Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona. We would have a much better country tolive in.

It was not "apathy". It was the Nat'l Chamber of Commerce, and numerous biz organizations, and the Republican party. In 2006, they picketed Carl Rove, due to the fact the repubs got hispanic swing vote, and won the ability to be able to file FAFSA forms with no income listed, so they would not have illegals get arrested or prosecuted by the IRS.

A recent case in point is the Utah gov't, which outlawed illegals for anything, then were hijacked by the upper eschelons of the Repub party, and the Nat'l C of C, and reversed that law they passed.

In 2002-3, since I read Spanish well, or well enough I read numerous descriptions of recruiting efforts in Mexico, all done by the same companies which back the repubs now.

It was a conservative thing. If you watch the movie Matewan, The company which was so cruel and murdered the women and children of unionizing mine employees was Stone Mtn. Coal, named after the biggest natural sculpture on earth, and fully owned by the Ku Klux Klan. The cons stirred the pot and got people to fight each other, unti lthe socialists figured it out, organized them, and stopped it. There is still no racism down there to this day-t was just a way for Repubs to stoke the fires. Another exAmple of that is the original MI militia, all started by Repubs, too.

Illegal aliens are brought here y companies to reduce wages and employment, and reduce the influence thru that of the labor movement, and nothing more.

It is a shame that in the US we have a horde of hard working people that will do almost anything for a pittance and in our managerial wisdom we can't figure out how to make that asset help the country. But we can darn sure figure out how to make that asset benefit private individuals and large corporations.

The way that our government has handled the border situation is nothing but greed. Both "parties" have had a chance to help the problem and they have both failed until just recently. I applaud the fact that the BP has seen a 100% increase in funding and we have doubled the manpower on the border. I also like the idea that we have shifted high tech military and aerospace technology towards border security. And above all else the end to the "Drop Yards" in southern New Mexico and Arizona has done more for the situation than any other single thing. This was all brought about by the current administration and it is a GOOD THING.

Anyone that spews that same old rhetoric about Obama importing illegal voters has no idea what is going on here in the southwest. There are many reasons why things are better now and it is certainly not all about the Obama administration, but what they have done on the border for security is leaps and bounds above what was done under the Republican watch and has made a huge difference.

When it comes to border issues you either support the truth or a political ideal. The truth is that politics has only kept our borders open for illegal business. Neither "side" is innocent. Both partisans have been benefitting from this chaos.

Good old fashioned law enforcement and a pile of money is the only thing that can secure the borders and this administration has done a fantastic job. Exponentially better than any previous administration has. Even if a man refuses to believe the huge drop in illegals has anything to do with Obama the fact that there are twice as many officers along the border with infinitely better equipment than five years ago is nothing to sneeze at.

Now butt out of things you don't know anything about.

A hundred years ago no one walked across the border expecting the United States to provide them with an income, a house, free medical care, public schooling, or any of the other taxpayer funded social programs the United States offers today. And if you committed a crime such as stealing a horse, or murder, you got hung by the neck until dead, citizen or no.
Tell you what: I'll gladly trade you the open borders of a century ago, for rolling back government, at all levels, to the levels of a hundred years ago, and a return to executing murderers and thieves.

Some of the amnesty programs have rewarded illegals who have been here several years, have families, have a house, have a job, have NOT broken the law, etc.
Ha what a joke.
They either drive without license and insurance or they obtain license through deception. So right away, there are laws broken.

Keep a pinch of salt handy today because not everything you hear will be the gospel truth. Someone might have manipulated the facts to make them sound more acceptable, or they may have got carried away and forgotten to tell you something rather vital. Try to keep misunderstandings to a minimum by being as straightforward and honest as possible, and by not simply assuming that people know what you're talking about and therefore not bothering to explain properly.
