Letter: Wal-Mart gouged by Chico council

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

Why has it taken seven years for the Chico City Council to make a decision on Wal-Mart? The public never heard or saw a question of Costco building a bigger store.

This has been hashed and rehashed here so many times already -- why bother to do it yet again? Is it really going to do any good or contribute anything positive?

Why not read the other forum threads on the same subject for answers to your questions?

I hope WalMart tells them to stick it and close the Chico store. Seems to me there is space just outside the city in the county for a really big store.

Since walmart doesn't sell firewood why should they pay a million bucks to clean up a problem they didn't create?

The EIR stated that their were impacts from the expansion that Walmart could not mitigate. The council said the negatives did not outweigh the positives, so they denied to declare "overriding considerations." If Walmart was to improve some other problem in town (wood smoke), then they council would reconsider since the overall positives (cheap goods AND cleaner air) would then outweigh the negatives.

I think just about everyone in town is sick of the MANY BLUNDERS that City Hall has achieved over the past couple years. I would not be surprised to see that every last one of those morons gets voted out.

well, Nickel, Flynn and Gruendl are up for ejection. But who will take their place?

hey Sorenson, are you running, or what?

I'd say, the most important one to get out of there is Gruendl. For one thing, he's been in there long enough. For another thing, he's way too friendly with certain new urban developers. He was behind the push to raise city salaries (including his own, council more than doubled their salary a couple of years ago) by approving unprecedented levels of new development in Chico, bottoming out the housing and rental markets and sending how many people to foreclosure?

Then, after the market tanked, he arranged for a 7 million dollar city bail out for New Urban Partners.

He's also heavily behind building a new municipal parking lot downtown, no matter what it means to anybody, because DiGiovanni wants to build apartments down there, and he doesn't want to provide parking or pay in-lieu fees.

Get rid of Gruendl, and you know what - Juanita will stop bitching for 60 days! Take it or leave it.

Dump all of the city council EXCEPT LARRY WAHL... he's the only one that still believes in privacy for the citizens and Freedom to all. He's for bringing in Businesses to provide more jobs. He is for the working people and doesn't want to give away hard earned money to lazy leaches in the streets.

The City Council would be better off with more members that had the working people's needs in their decisions. Stop making more restrictions, spending $$$ on losers, and keeping businesses out by blackmailing them with stupid demands.

Wal Mart is opening up a super store in Oroville..I wonder how the Chico City Council would feel if Wal Mart just closed the Chico store all together..Just think of the tax dollars that would be lost to Oroville...

They actually have a huge section of instant fire logs - made in China!

I wasn't aware of that since I don't have a fireplace or a wood stove but I can't believe that they make a million dollars worth of smoke.

The city counsel has embarrassed me as a loyal life long citizen, by demanding, delaying, extorting and black mailing Walmart. What a horrible example of leadership they have made!

If Walmart decided to leave Chico and relocate to Orland, Hamilton City, or Corning then what? What would our council do then? Chico needs new council members and get rid of the current dead beats representing their own personal interests. What a sham!

If some of what gets posted here under your name doesn't embarrass you, what could?

My native blood tells me to always be true to myself. I may come across to some as a little strange but then I remember I am a product of my environment. If you have a complaint about me please take it up with the school board.

You know it'll never happen, but even in the hypothetical situation that it did, people would still continue to shop at Target, K-Mart, Ross, Kohl's, Big Lots, Payless Shoes, T.J. Maxx, Penney's, Home Depot, Lowes, and all the other stores in Chico and do just about as well overall with sales and specials (and have a lot more selection too). Not that many would drive all the way over to Oroville just to go to a WalMart, and those who did would be in for a big disappointment when they found out that the prices there are higher than they are in Chico because of the lack of retail competition in Oroville.
