It's unfortunate that the dogs would be killed but I believe at this point, once they start mauling and killing, they need to die. The owners need to be ordered to pay restitution for any damages incured, both physical and mental. Not just fined. Warnings and fines mean nothing. It's a criminal act as far as I'm concerned letting your animal run free and kill.

...do what you have to do....animal control are like law enforcement, they can only take a report AFTER the fact. It is up to ourselves to protect who and what we hold dear.

I have to agree with these people. I just wish the owners had even a modicum of intelligence and keep their pets in their own yards. Its too bad that someone will lose a pet because of their stupidity.

Dogs are some of our finest friends, but as roving individuals and as packs, dogs are dangerous to other pets, people, and wildlife. Those of us who live in the woods or in a rural area need to keep them fenced.
Some of my neighbors like to have their dogs roaming the hills as a sign of what.. earlier times, when animals roamed free? Did they? One of my neighbors lets a dog roam free all day and we have to keep our controlled dog away from it.
We love our animals only by protecting them and controlling them. That some people are threatening to shoot them as attack packs says that the owners do not love or care for them properly. Animal control needs to remove them from such owners, before the dogs do serious damage to people themselves, not just their livestock and other pets. This is not the wild west anymore and the wild west would not tolerate roving packs of dogs.

Read the want ads.. "Free puppies"...every tweaker can get a free pit bull any day of the week.. I don't have any answers, but I have a soultion... it is called a .38 hollow point for the good shots, and a 12 gauge for those of us who can't shoot so straight! I will shoot to kill (and bury on my property) any animal that wanders here. I say to bury it because I had a friend get sued over killing a predator dog. She was kind enough to go tell the family, and they sued.. so just kill and bury! I won't even involve Animal Control..if you do, make sure ALL your animals,(dogs, cats, horses) are up to date on rabies, or you will be the one in trouble with them.

Your writing is very confusing and hard to understand... I can't understand where you stand... but anyhow, how do you propose Animan Control hunt down and identify the people who have roaming dogs?? And by what right could they remove the dog or dogs? Unless the dogs are caught "red-mouthed), there is nothing Animal Control can do. Even animals are innocent until proven guilty. Why should I have to go to the expense of "dog proofing" my property? Again I say, the dogs will be shot and buried!

Unfortunately, way too many people that have dogs have no business having pets. It sounds like fun when they get them, and as the novelty wears off, so does their attention paid to that pet. Owners of barking dogs are also in that catagory.... they have no concern for their neighbors, and when confronted, will simply say that they are dogs, and that is what dogs do. Sadly, when you cannot deal with the owoner, and animal control has no affect on them, then you must deal with the dog yourself, and the result of this will often mean the death of the dog. I have owned, loved, and cared for two dogs, and many of our neighbors did not know that we had dogs....that is because we would not allow them to bark at everything that walked, talked, or slithered by the house. Polermo folks, do what you have to do, but I agree with the poster that said, "Keep it to yourself."

That's the way it has to be done--but don't wait for the dogs to attack your animals. If an unwanted dog comes on your property without its owner, shoot it. Seriously, sadly since it is the owner's failure to control the dog, but there is no better way to stop dog attacks.

There is a big stray dog problem in Palermo. I won't walk anywhere because of the dogs that run loose. Animal Control is not a cooperating entity.
I had a large stray dog wander into my fenced yard,(gate left open) I called Animal Control and they told me to keep the dog until they could come get it. It was a Friday and they wouldn't have anyone available until the following Monday to pick it up. It is not my job to buy dog food for and take care of stray dogs, I pay extra property taxes for Animal Control to do that. My daughter found a stray dog, took it to Animal Control, and they wouldn't take it, unless she paid them. Huh? She was helping them out. Irresponsible pet owners should be banned from having pets.

I once lived in Palermo and owned a beautiful dog (that my husband and I rescued from the SPCA... someone left their dog out there, tied to a post, in the hot sun, with no water and no food on a Sunday). We picked up him, put him in our car, and drove him home. Then we moved to Palermo and found out that we had come upon some other dogs' territory. My dog is gone now and he was the best dog we've ever owned. I've seen dead dogs lying in ditches because of these packs of dogs! We've lost chickens and sheep. And after repairing and replacing broken fence, we had it... packed up and left. There are some mean-looking dogs out there. Sometimes, one would come into our yard to see if we were friendly (and, our mistake ... we were friendly)... and then at night, they would come and kill whatever livestock we had. I love dogs, but not the killin' kind. Shoot 'em down, folks. Get rid of them.

They have an equal problem with dogs in South Side. It tends to be an ongoing issue in poorer areas where people can't really afford to take care of their animals as they should (i.e. food and proper fencing). I can remember being terrified to walk to school in the morning because there was a group of dogs the neighborhood kids simply referred to as "the pack" that would chase you and if you ever found yourself cornered, good luck! Once they start running in packs hunting and embracing their more wild nature it's done. You have no choice but to put em down.
