Seems like if this were a feasible notion, the good folks in West Point would jump on it. They already have a port in conjunction with the paper mill, as well as a rail line. If the feasibility study comes back positive, watch West Point eat New Kent's lunch.

Not in my lifetime unfortunately. Doomed to sit in traffic.

It sounds fine, but getting those trucks off the road is NOT going to ease traffic on the HRBT. I would hate see anyone use that excuse to funnel money from transportation to this project. I am not sitting behind trucks during rush hour. I am sitting behind thousands of cars and may 2-3 trucks.

I agree, I dont see too many trucks on 64, just Navy dudes who wont live in Norfolk. PUT THE CONTAINERS ON BARGES FOR RICHMOND, AS ALREADY PLANNED. That way its already close to 64/and 95 and the infrastructure is already there. Makes perfect sense to me.

I don't see trucks.
They don't go through here ... they have to be stopped for inspection.
They go around.
What I see are are cars cars cars and more cars.
NO Barges needed to pollute the waters.

Now we need to do something about all the construction vehicles on the highways and local streets. I was trapped behind a crane this morning.

Will these barges be stacked high eniugh to cause a significant increase in the frequency and length of Coleman Bridge openings?

Traffic would move more smoothly if school buses and garbage trucks were banned from the roads during rush hour as well. Garbage pickup should be moved to nighttime hours. School could begin early in the afternoon and end at night. Construction equipment, including dump trucks, should be kept off the road in the daytime too. The roads should be left clear during the day for people who have important places to go.

ya'll are funny......some good ideas though.....some bad ones too.....i do agree that building navy housing on the peninsula was a stupid idea, but thats done so we are doomed to sit in traffic forever....unless we decide to move to avoid the overtaxed state we live in.....

I think this would be a good way to reduce some traffic off of the general hampton roads, road ways. As a driver living close to the proposed site this would benefit me. I think this would also benefit companies who ship from Hampton roads to Richmond or visa versa. Cost of shipping could potentially go down but travel from point A to point B would be shorter also. Which in turn as a owner operator my fuel cost would also go down . I also agree with the above stated opinion of anything over a hundred miles may not be a benefit to this location. Companies would have to send drivers futher to pick the freight up and a majoritie of the drivers would be coming from Hampton Roads. Miles equals $$ which alot of us (Owner Operators) are not seeing. Double edged sword!!!(Great for the local O/O but unless a company moves close, could potentially be a long haul for others)

I think this is a great idea, it will help ease traffic problems and bring much needed business to New Kent County.

Not going to happen in New Kent. Thr trucks would still have to make a 100-200 mile drive.

West Point is set up for it, we will see.
As to pollution, local boat enthusiasts are more polluting. Esp. on the York River.

Although I don't live on the eastcoast, I can't help but wonder how in the world will loading freight onto barges ease traffic congestion!!??!! In fact, one doing such, may add to the already existing traffic, no matter the time of day or night. Consider the freight on board and time of delivery in which it must be handled. Frozen goods are on time restrictions and trucks must be ready to receive and transport such items in that state or risk contamination, spoilage to name a few things. If I know anything, planning route strategies can't account for every possible scenario.

The long and short of transportation is just to leave everything as is and make the most of it...Motorist will have to adjust their times accordingly by leaving work/home/play earlier or later than they like!!

Nope. There are TOO many trucks on the highways. Hindering traffic and the obvious. No, we would love the MANY semi's-huge trucks off the roads into a barge system.

Trucks on barges, not going to happen, and won't be happening anytime soon...May be too expensive (for local govt) to implement such a transportation system!!!
