I grew up in Jewell ridge and I have always went to the fireworks. I just read about them not having them this year. I can't believe it. They said the fire department didn't have time to take the class for new laws. That's ridiculous, why didn't they have time? Where's all the money gonna go that they took up? I'm sorry but this really sux. 30 years of fireworks. 30 years I have went all 30 years. I just can't believe this.

I hate they aren't going to do it. But you need to understand the fire fighers you are fussing about are volunteers. They have families and job that take up lots of time. So if they didn't have time I understand. I hate that they won't do the show but there are others in the area to go to. Also thanks to the vol. firefighters for all you do.

Well tell us where the moneys going to go that's all I wanna know? I have always appreciated them for volunteering so no need to go there. How long was the class? If it was 1 day im sure they could of found away everyone has days off. The money they make from the event goes toward the next year. So where's it going? That's what the community wants to know. Everyone is wanting to know but of course to scared to ask. I think we deserve to know. I wanna know where the money I GAVE AS WELL AS OTHERS WENT!!!!!

I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe they're using the money to, I dunno, help fight fires or something?

Oops didn't even notice your name was really sorry! But anyway, if it is only a one day thing. Why don't you volunteer for the class and do the fireworks. That is pretty selfish to say, "If it was 1 day im sure they could of found away everyone has days off.". I mean I God knows I have a million things to do on my days off and I don't even Vol. at a fire dept. So I guess if they didn't have anyone to do so be it. I will miss the show but life goes on. As for the money you shouldn't give to a charity looking for something in return. I don't know where you paid $$ at anyway. I have been up there and never had to pay?

We have watched the fireworks at Jewell Ridge for as long as I remember, unless we are away at vacation. I know the fireworks are extremely expensive. I am sure they have to purchase insurance for the event & VOLUNTEERS have to use their own time from the REAL jobs to travel and take the classes required. They have to get the fireworks, set them up & make sure some drunk idiot isn't to close or trying to sneak around where they are set up. Perhaps those complaining could volunteer to pay to have pyrotechnic experts to come & take care of everything. And pny up the 10's of thousands of dollars to purchase the fireworks. It is easy to sit on your rump & say what others should do so you can get enjoyment, but few like to actually contribute. The 4th celebration has really gotten out of hand at Jewell Ridge. It would be great if there weren't so many disgusting toothless drunks staggering around.
I will say better notice should have been provided so other locations could have arranged something for the 4th. Not sure why they would not have given the courtesy of letting people know earlier.

Who said I spent money there or wanted it back? I said they tell evetbody from this thing called uh idk microphone. so I dont give to a charity n want it back. Fireworks is not a charity anyway its an event to entertain the public. A charity is you give money to the poor I'll and so on. Its a generous contribution. So Jewell ridge sales food not to give the money to us.i mean that would be stupid go out buy food to sale and then after u sale holler for everyone to come get their money. Now wouldn't it they're volunteers and they have everything they need so dont even go there. It may be old but where things aren't ever moved there in the same condition as the day anything was made.

That is what I was thinking!
Also, the food you buy up there is made by individuals and they pocket the cash I bet! It is a business for them. I too think it had gotten out of hand. But I always went out the road and not into the camp area where all or most of the idiots are anyway. As for it not being a charity, maybe charity is a bad choice of words. But still it was a donation if you don't like the outcome call JR town council if they have one and talk to them. Or maybe the FD chief and see what they have to say.

Fourth Of July Fireworks Cancelled in Jewell Ridge
By Laura Halm

JEWELL RIDGE, Va.-- It's not the weather putting a damper on Fourth of July festivities in Jewell Ridge -- News 5 learned this year's fireworks and celebrations have been cancelled.
We checked with the president of Jewell Ridge Recreation and Development and learned this is the first time in nearly 30 years there has not been any kind of Fourth of July celebration.
The reason for the cancellation is simply because volunteers were not able to get training in time. "They've always had to be certified, but it's more stringent training. I think it's maybe a week or two or three days. But the gentlemen could not get time off from their jobs to get training," said Barbara Altizer, president of Jewell Ridge Recreation and Development.
Altizer says they're not planning Fourth of July celebrations for next year.

How long ago did they know this? Thats the question, hell i wud've took the time off from my job to go to the class and shoot the fireworks off this year if they would've advertised for individuals who would qualify to take the class. I'm sure i'm not the only one either. Its just z real shame no more effort was made to preserve a community tradition that has been around for several years!

Ask not what Jewlle Ridge can do for you ,ask what you can do for Jewlle Ridge!! I went there once when I was a kid and had a panic attack. I've allways felt freaked out when I go up there. Here's a solution , everybody that wants to come, bring a pack of Wallmart fireworks. I'd say the drunks will be there cause they didn't get the memi

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Scorpio

It's a frustrating and rather disappointing day because you have to cope with delays and setbacks to your plans. A travel arrangement may have to be postponed or there could be a hitch about something connected with education. You're also feeling subdued and tired, and you're longing to spend some time on your own although this may not be possible. Don't worry, this difficult mood will soon blow over.
