Pelican Bay chief, three officers resign positions

Full story: Azle News Online

I've never broken any city policies, I was never accused of wrongdoing. I received a perfect employment evaluation just three weeks ago. The chief of police, one paid officer and two reserve officers resigned from the Pelican Bay police force Tuesday, barely two hours before the city council was to meet and consider the termination of the chief. via Azle News Online

The city council is cleaning this mess up. The former Mayor was the direct supervisor of the Police Chief. Now that the crooked cops are gone, you will see drastic changes take place.

Good for you city council. I'm glad too see a city council that is looking out for the residents of Pelican Bay. Like my daughter said maybe now we will have a mayor with less of a Boss Hog personality.

Amy, the crime rate has gone up because all the old bad cops are getting rehired, by the new Chief. Look at the PD website, they no longer post crime stats. The Chief message is Frankum old one with a new picture and name.

Tommy, get your facts straight, read in the Azle news for police actions...NO, your wrong again, NO old (former) cops have been or going to be rehired by this new chief. Just where do you people get your information from?? The funny pages??
The new police department doesn't have time to play around on web pages, they are too busy fighting crime, filing suits with the DA's office and working to get the best officers the city can afford. The officers are already the lowest paid officers in Tarrant County and they still do a jam up job.
Why not visit the office sometimes and please get your facts straight for once....Are you a Frankum supporter?? If so, I feel for ya...

If you call harrassing good clean kids who are not involved in any wrong doing. Writing tickets to one person when there are 3 or 4 people involved in an incident,( which sounds alot like favoritism to me ), clean hardworking officers, then someone has a pretty low expectency of the waY the officers are supposed to be. Honestly it sounds alot like these guys are on power trips with major cases of small mans syndrome. Hey Officers, GET REAL AND DO YOUR JOB RITE. GET THE DRUGS OUTTA HERE AND START TICKETING THESE SPEEDERS AROUND DOING 50 IN A 20....Plus, we hardly ever see a cop out, between 9pm to midnight.

Take your concerns and complaints directly to the Police Chief. Our officers have to work with what they have, patrol when they can, and address problems when they arrive. Taking one prisoner to jail takes 3-4 hours of lost time in the city. If you don't know or understand HOW police business works, then get your facts straight before you bellow attacks against the officers.

Crime in the city goes up and down and the youngest of gangs are trying to form.
I see a group (3-6) young boys (ages 13-15) going through the city, all dressed in black and they have even acted as if they were going to attack my car as I passed, could this be ONE of your kids???
When parents are notified that their kid was caught committing a crime, its always, "Not my child".
IF parents would keep their "young" kids at home after dark, a lot of problems would not be happening. Where is the adult supervision over your children? WHY are your children out at night when they should be home studying school work??

The council will be working on a new CURFEW ordinance soon, so when YOUR child is caught after curfew hours, how loud will you scream when citations are written against you??

It would take an army of police to be everywhere at all times and to hire more officers, the city could raise your taxes to pay for them.
Drugs will always be a problem, when one is removed, another and his friends move in.
REPORT suspicious activity to the police, notice an unusual oder coming from a neighbors house, report it, see a lot of "traffic" going and coming, report it.
It takes the eyes and ears of all the city's residents to help control crime and drugs, so why not do YOUR part in helping to make the city safer??? REPORT CRIMES and criminal activities.

And IF you can find a city or neighborhood without drugs or crime, give us the address, we might consider moving there???

OK First of all, I have the upmost respect for our hard working city officials, However, I think in all fairness, if 3-4 kids are cought doing wrong, they all should be took home to their parents, NOT just 1. As far as a CURFEW, I am all for it! My children are some of the few who are NOT out after dark. As far as more officers, Great,Hire them, I read recently that salaries were doubled on the force, and they now make more than most other public officials. Could this maby attract prospective police officials?

In reply to RMc-3, just because it is a "group" of 3-6 boys does not make it a gang, second just because they wear black does not mean they are criminals. What you say is called profiling. Under the first amendment it says "the right of the people peaceably to assemble". Yes, there are some problems out here. I have lived here off and on for almost 30 years. If two families have 2 boys a piece and are friends according to you they are a gang! Get real. And as far as it being one of TTinchus kids, I can tell you it wasn't. I know their sons. Being questioned about oh lets say alot of the stop signs missing because of you height when you have said you didn't do it and had proof you didn't is profiling and bordering on harassment. Giving one person the blame when you know more were involved sends the wrong message. All should have been escorted home, not just the one. I know some of the officers out here, and they are good for the most part. Compaired to what has been here in the past. But the cops need to let the kids know they can trust them and that they wont be harassed for knowing the wrong person. Our kids go to the same school ride the same bus, so they are going to know each other that does not count as a crime or quilt by association. The community needs to come together and bond more and have things for the teens to do. Alot of kids come from either broken homes, or financially strapped families. Some parents out here just flat out don't care what their kids are doing. Remember the saying, "it takes a village to raise a kid" these kids need people who care about them. They need to know they matter.

Not sure why this was posted on a old topic that had nothing to do with the current subject. I was shocked when I came across this website then relieved when I found out that this was a old topic. Whew!

You can't fault all the kids in Pelican Bay because of a few bad apples.. I'm sure that most kids are well behaved with proper upbringing and parental supervision but this is not always the case. Some of the "good" kids are guilty by association for hanging around some of these bad apples.

Yesterday, on my street and the one over a group of these kids were putting fire crackers inside mail-boxes and setting them off. This was witnessed by multiple people who were outside working in their yard or or enjoying the nice weather. I believe blowing up mail-boxes is a federal crime. Kids will be kids but this is disrespectful of property that does not belong to them. Several of these kids who like to walk down to the lake and then back up Pelican Drive North past the Fire Station like to ride bikes, skateboards and walk together in groups taking up the entire street. More than once these kids (ages 11-15) will purposely block cars and taunt the cars drivers. I've seen a blond kid lift a rock at one of these cars like he was going to hit it while the others were trying to egg him on. This borderlines on gang activity since many of these kids would never have done such a thing if they were alone.
If you read the Azle News PB Police Blotter you will see all the break-ins and vandalism that occurs out here. I have had neighbors tell me gas has been siphoned out of their cars and windows including the old donuts shop have been broken out. Have you noticed all the stop signs and street signs missing? What's the deal with that?
My neighbors tell me when you call for police at night there is never a police officer on duty. It's no wonder crime is so rampant since most crime occurs under the cover of darkness. Why do we only see police during the day?

Parents need to watch out for their kids and know who they are hanging around with. Peer pressure might influence them into doing something they would not normally do.

As I stated earlier, this "group" of boys were acting in an aggressive manner while I slowly passed them, and this has happened twice. I could have reported them, but I did not.
About 10 street signs, including stop signs were found in the bushes next to a lot for sale on Pelican Drive North. Wonder how they got there??

These types of things are crimes that most youths commit. There's no re-sale value in street signs since it is illegal to sale one that is stolen. And yes, the buyers know they are stolen since most city's reuse them.

I'm not pointing fingers at any group, but these boys need to be watched. I was always told as a child, your name can be scared by the people you hang with, whether we like it or not. The police are doing their investigation and some of the boys will "talk".

Also, I stated that the curfew ordinance is coming up for review and hopefully hours will change. I wish there were more for these young people to do, but it's not here.
Maybe you should organize a group to provide some activities for them to do. I know the church used to have family movie nights, but only about 5-8 kids would show up.
So what would you suggest that the city do to entertain your kids??? I didn't realize it was up to the city to provide activities for them?? Isn't that the parents duty???

To clear up the comment on police salaries, it was reported wrong.. Their salaries did not double. So whoever reported that was incorrect.
Doubled salaries was on the last bunch of officers who worked here and you see, they are GONE...the city's budget can only handle so much and the officers are paid with what the city can afford. We have lost officers who went to another city for more money.

Our officers are the lowest paid in the county and we should be thankful for them, they could go else where for better pay, benefits, overtime pay and better conditions to work in. I believe they stay because they like working for the city and see the rewards by doing so.

If people would respect the duties of these fine men who put their lives on the line every day for you and I. Do you realize how many calls they get because a drunk boyfriend/girlfriend is out of line and then when they (PD) arrive, it's all over with and they don't need the police? Or how many crank calls they get? And most times it's the same people calling. They want the police to handle their drunk or doped up freind but when the police go to arrest them, the other screams police injustice.
I feel that these fine men are doing a good job and yes there are times when no officer is on duty, that can't be helped, they need and are required off time, just like any other working person.

RMc-3, I wonder if I can barrow your ladder, the one you used to climb up on that pedestal you put yourself on. I have read several of the commits you have made on several topics. I didn't say it was the "city's place" to provide activities for them! And thank you very much I take care of MY KID! You get so snotty when someone tries to suggest something! How dare you be so condescending! This isn't about you! It is about the kids and what we can do for them. If you would have left your commint ending with the church part it would have been enough. But in your true fasion you had to go further. People like you do not help the matter any. You have already judged and tried them in your mind. Nothing anyone says would matter to you. It takes one bad apple to ruin the pie, whether it be a kid or an adult. You need to get you nose out of the air and look around there are still good kids out here. And the ones with problems have people like you telling them they are no good, why should they do any better? What do they have to look forward to, being judge all the time by people like you. I am not saying the kids should get off scott free. We need to figure out some sort of program out here. I believe not all the kids are so far gone that we can't reach them. They just need to know we care!

My nose is not in the air, but I am informed when problem exist in the city, including the problems with young criminals. My home was attacked when we first moved here and lucky enough we caught the boy involved. That was 8 years ago. Want to know where this young man is now??? JAIL!!!!

So you want to borrow my ladder? Maybe it would help some people to see beyond their noses.
I'm Not on a pedestal either, I have had to defend my every action from those who don't have a clue what I go through and I have an opinion, just as every other american does. Being on council does not exclude me from having opinions.

I know that there are a lot of kids who do good and stay out of trouble. And I praise those who stay clear of trouble and the people who may lead them down a dark path.
I had to handle a situtation where 3 young boys were caught in a crime. I had to read them their rights but before doing this, I talked very calmly to these boys and tried to give them advise to stay out of trouble, go to school and become a productive adult one day, that prison or jail was not the way to go.
So you see, you don't have a clue.

So you are offended by my comments, so sorry about that. But you didn't address it either.
So I ask again, what do you expect the city to do with entertaining the young ones here??
Do you have any ideas of what programs should be provided at no cost to the city?? The city's budget is very tight and no excess of funds is available.
Snotty?? You don't have a clue about me or what I stand for and fight for.

For all the good kids, they deserve an "ATTA BOY/GIRL" and give them the praise they deserve.
In the eight years I have been here, sadly, I have seen more end up in jail than not.

"entertaining the young ones" was not what I had said. I said "The community needs to come together and bond more and have things for the teens to do." There is a difference. I am sure we can think of something, if WE ALL WORK TOGETHER. I am sure you do know more of what is going on. But sometimes we need a reality check to put things back into perpesctive. Maybe things along once a month pot lucks, block parties, things that would get the communtiy together. Or mentoring projects, big brother or sister type. I do not know about grants I would love to learn. But is there something that maybe the kids could earn scholarships money for doing community service? We have alot of elderly out here that might need some help, maybe a good neighbor program and teach the kids some skills. If maybe we could get some of the older people or even people out here who have a business, that they could talk to the kids like seminars. Just some suggestions.

That all sounds great, get with some folks and put a plan together.
The city and Briar Church have had two events at city hall with free entertainment, food and games and the turn out from the city was very low.
They do plan to have more events, but I don't know when.
Believe me, I have tried many times to have some type of activity for the kids, heck I even got the park built for them. I have suggested a movie night and dances at city hall, all to no avail.

The former police chief set up a scholarship program, this didn't go far either. The young lady who won it only got about $600, due to the fact that hardly any donations were recieved, even the former chief pledged $1,000 and he didn't pay. The city had no control over this program and once the chief was gone so was this.

It would be great to have pot luck dinners, block parties, etc, BUT where will the money come from to support them??? Donations from our residents is getting harder every year to collect.

But here's an FYI** There will be a visit from Santa on Decemebr 13 from 1:30-3:30 pm at city hall to have milk and cookies with the kids. Donations of baked goodies (christams cookies, cupcakes, pastries, christmas candy, etc) will be needed, along with cash to purchase milk, juices, paper products and small toys for Santa to give each child.
So far a donation of $65.00 has been received.
Cash donations can be made at city hall and anyone wishing to donate baked goods, needs to sign up at city hall (baked goods need to be at city hall on December 13 at 12 noon.)

So see, I do keep the young ones in mind, just as I have done for the last 4 years by organizing the city's christmas basket program for the family's and kids. Making sure they have a wonderful christmas and that "Santa" had not forgotten them.
Unfortunately, I am unable to organize the basket program this year, so unless someone else steps up to the plate, there will be none this year.
Amen

The Neighborhood and Community Advisory Committee that McWhorter likes to bad mouth is the one working with First Baptist Church Briar to bring these kid friendly events to the children of Pelican Bay. They are also "looking into" a possible beach project that McWhorter likes to trash the moment she hears the word beach because she is against it. Just because McWhorter is against it doesn't mean everyone is. I believe it can be done with zero expense to the City by volunteers and donations. McWhorter, please leave them alone. We know you have you list of reasons why you don't think it is a good idea, let the advisory committee look into it and when present their findings to the entire council before you shoot it down. I and over 20 of my neighbors feel this would be a great thing for the citizens of Pelican Bay. You yourself said you will be moving out of the bay. So please, just leave things alone. Thank you.
