Fight At South Lakes High School

Don't hype this up. it's a small thing that people made into a big situation. i go to SLHS and I can let you know there was no sea of people rushing to see the fight, there was never a "reputation" of violence at the school. All there is, is a bunch of people that hype thing up like what happen today. that's all.

South Lakes only has the reputation that is has because everyone stays on hyping small incidents. The same thing could have happend in any private school. I am new to South Lakes this year, before i came people told me oh my gosh thats a ghetto school and what not. Its no different than any other school. Come on it's in the middle of Suburbia.

As a parent - my bigger concern is the fact that I can't find any news or facts about the incident. There is a rumor amoungst many that the county is trying to cover it up.....

Can anyone tell us where to read what has happened?

I cannot believe this!!! A gang realted fight I've never even seen happen at South Lakes High School I hope everybody is safe!!!!!!!

I go to south lakes, I was at the cafeteria when the fight happened, it was a highschool fight, nothing more. Im sure they happen at every school. This report acts as though there is a story. There was no 'carnage,' a chair was knocked over... I'm tired of the media portraying my school in a bad light, taking advantage of people's displeasure with the re-districting of oakton schools (out of ignorance and arrogance I assure you).

i go to south lakes, i didn't see the fight, but i know that it was blown out of proportion, i dont understand why everyone, including television stations decides to make south lakes look like such a bad school. it wasnt gang related that i know of, and the school only has a bad reputation because of people who don't go to south lakes, but go to schools around south lakes, and think that they have the right, and position at that to decide to spread rumors about our school having gang fights, drug issues, and overall being a bad school. but truthfully, our school really does NOT have big problems with those things. our principal was the best in the county, and the people are some of the nicest, greatest people i've ever known, among other things. rumors are what give our school such a bad name, and falsely blown out of proportion occurences! i do not think that any one going to any school would appreciate anyone giving their schools such a bad name. it is especially bad that you think you can go ahead and basically trash south lakes, when you dont know the people or the school, it is even worse because we're fighting a falsified reputation as it is! also, please stop only reporting on the BAD things that happen at south lakes, not the GOOD! if you would focus on both, not on the worse, then people wouldnt look down on SLHS nor become stubborn about the coming redistricting of our school. seriously, im saying this because i almost did not go to south lakes, and it was the BEST decision i could have ever made to go there, if you'd see us for the way we really are, you'd understand and feel the same way too.

SLHS does not have big problems because they cover it up like for example: The real reason why the JROTC teacher SEAN KEATING "quit."
He "quit" because SLHS found some dirty pictures of his students on his computer.
That's big news; the media should investigate that kind of stuff intead of little fights..
The rumor is that Sgt. Keating, who is white, likes African-American teenage girls. Why did he quit? He said in an iterview with Connection Newspaper that his job at SLHS was the perfect job. Also, where is his computer?

I think that the media does not get ther info the correct way, first of all I know some of the people that were involved and it wasn't a gang related fight, peole that don't know what happened are just talking to get some attention, but they don't know the real reasons nor the real problem. Another thing is that the media always is asking people that don't know anything about the incident. Also SLHS is just another school and people always see worse part of our school. The media rarely shows the GOOD side of SLHS.

It was just a gang related fight i don't think they should have remove them form school because it was only fights, fights happen at every school, i son't think what they are doing is far

whoever said the thing about jrotc above me is just spreading rumors, as high school students do. So don't make assumptions based on things like this or kids on the video saying things like 'chairs flying everywhere' and '1 or 2 gangs.' Of course high school students will say things like this, they want to feel like they were part of an interesting event! how many kids do you think they interviewed saying 'it wasn't a big deal,' or 'it lasted all of ten seconds.'

Yeah I agree. My friend told it happened in the morning, so it's not like a lot of people were there anyway like you said.

I'm very disturbed by your imbalanced reporting. I am a sophmore at South Lakes High School, and know for a fact that it is a very diverse school, yet you chose to ask only white students about their opinions. I'm sorry for being blunt, but first of all, most of these kids don't have many, or any, latino, or black friends. They don't know anything about gangs firsthand. There are very few gang members at our school, and this has been the first altercation in a long time. Your reporting makes it sound like there were knives, guns, and razors, but only fists were being used. Yes, the fight was wrong, but it was not as serious as you make it. I'm very angered because ignorant reports like this make our school seem like a bad place, and its not.

South Lakes does have gangs. Gang activity is on the rise again in this area. The M-13 is alive and well so get your heads out of the sand.

If this was nothing, why were the cops going around questioning innocent kids on the streets and asking to search them without a warrant? Seems like the cops are into violations as well.

if your wondering, his computer is still here, along with ALL of his other stuff.

and yea im pretty pissed that the school administration tried to cover it up. they did the same thing with coach holmes, the lax coach, and the softball coach. and they didn't even give the students the "real" reason why they left.

as for the fight, it was NO gangfight.
it was just 2 people getting all up into each other's business. that's all.

so someone should tell the media to back off and get their freakin facts straight.

Keep sharing about this situation. Don't keep quiet about it! The more we protest about what happened, the more we will get the right information.

I go to South Lakes, but i'm sure noting is going on there, as far is as i see. I feel very comfortable there. I hope people stop making things.

well for some one with their head "out of the sand" you sure dont know much about things seeing as there is no such gang as "M-13" I think you are referring to MS13 but i DONT think its right of you to correct students with first hand knowledge of both the school and the situation when you yourself dont have your information correct. also gangs dont walk around punching every random students especially ms-13 they are smart and level headed when it come to being in public they generally dont go around starting trouble with anyone and everyone they see. they plan out what they do before hand unless they are confronted by a rival gang. the majority of students dont have anything to be worried about unless they are in a gang. its not as if fist fights only break out at south lakes high school. also the job of the police is to find out as best they can what happened and why and to obtain as much detail as posable and if that means questioning "innocent students" so be it.
