Great article! this comes from a company called Kut Kwick, Corp. They have been around forever and know this business VERY well.
Here's an excerpt from their website: "The Brushmaster Successfully Fights Forest Fires The Kut Kwick Brushmaster mower is designed to fight forest fires. The machine reduces all undergrowth to small cuttings that lie flat on the ground. The material on the ground cannot blaze because it is deprived of oxygen. Wind permitting, there will be a low burn, burn out or smolder across most mowed areas at a very slow rate that will allow fire fighters to extinguish anything that remains with a tamp. Trees larger than 4” are left standing, however the canopy normally will not catch fire because the brush beneath it has been eliminated. The Efficiency In Forest Fire Prevention & Control Is Unsurpassed The machine will reduce the undergrowth in typical southern forest land at a cutting rate of 1 – 1 ˝ miles/hour at a 7 foot width. This equates to 1 – 1 ˝ acres per hour. A single machine cutting 8 hours a day for 3 days will produce a fuel break of 1 – 1 ˝ miles long by 200 feet wide. The Brushmaster operates on slopes up to 32 degrees with zero turn radius maneuverability. The Brushmaster Is Environmentally Friendly The cut material mats the forest floor making it passable for vehicles to travel over cut areas, which is an advantage over plowed areas. The root structure is not damaged preventing erosion and mud slides. New growth returns which is not readily flammable for about one year. Animals and birds can get to the ground to feed. They are attracted to and thrive in areas cut by the Brushmaster. People Respond Gratefully To Having Areas They See Or Use Cleared By The Brushmaster One of the most important results of clearing with the Brushmaster is the “Beautification.” Last but not least, the appreciative public response to the “Beautification” and fire protection is of immeasurable value to the government agency that has done the work." http://www.KutKwick.com/brushmaster.htm |
