The government has no business funding the arts. It's just another waste of money.

The government and school district, as cited in the article, are cutting the wrong things. Instead of cutting "the arts", they should be looking at those in the higher places who have astronomical incomes in both the state government and school districts. Take the "raise" out of the budget; you would be surprised how much money that eases up for both.

So I guess you didn't read the article. So, if the government didn't fund the arts what would happen to the schools, people, festivals, etc that are given grants through the arts council? Wow, you do not take any pride in living in Chambersburg and the many things Chambersburg offers.

"We must keep it up," DeKarske said of the effort. "If we don't, it would be the same as saying we don't care"

No. It is not saying that we don't care. It is saying we can't afford to be spending money on the arts when people are out of jobs and the economy is in the tank. How can you attempt to justify giving public money to private groups to put on plays when the country is at its highest unemployment rate in 30 years?? If you want to spend money on stuff like this, raise it privately, ALL of it, and spend it how you like, but leave my tax dollars alone.

Writing about what? The proposed funding cuts. They want the funding maintained. I don't. I got it right.

Maybe they would at last pass the NTLB tests!
So the kids could earn a decent living when they are done.

Maybe as a bonus they could read too!

It seems that some people have the opinion that the arts are not importent, and that in this time of financial trouble it makes a viable target for funding cuts.

That may be true. But, then so would the sports programs, if that holds true.

But - OH - what a stink that would raise, wouldn't it?

A wise scholar said that it is important to have a "health mind in a healthy body". If we fail to encourage the mind, then we fail to encourage the entire person.

How about this idea? If the state wants to save money, it could take away the infamous "walk around money". How much money could that save, and waste it could prevent?

Here is the deal. If enough people were interested and patronized "the arts", there would be no need for the government to fund it. Our quality of life is not going to suffer, as a whole, because few people are even paying any attention to it. This is absolutely the kind of thing that government should be extricating themselves from paying for. Let the people who enjoy these things pay for them and let the rest of us keep our tax money in our pockets.

Maybe they can't pass the tests because the parents don't care. Maybe if the parents would take interest, their kids could pass the tests and read. You are punishing the kids in Fulton County who get funded for their play, you are punishing the people who enjoy IceFest, and you are punishing yourself. Talk about your tax dollars being wasted? My tax dollars were wasted on the high school stadium. They spent so much money on the stadium when it could have gone to helping kids learn. I had no say in that. You are missing the whole point. Not only is it the arts council, but it is the Elm Street Project and the Downtown Project losing their funding. All three organizations vital to downtown Chambersburg.

What happens in a bad economy? Families don't have money to spend on extras? Well guess what? Didn't you read the article about the FREE things the arts council does? Wow, free things for kids, instead of having them watch tv? Free things for parents to do with their kids.

I did not support the Taj Mahal sports complex either, but that is no justification to waste even more money.

If this stuff is so damn vital, then these programs could sustain themselves without having to rely on government handouts.

I have lived my entire life in chambersburg and can't say that I know one single person who has benefited from the arts council.

Also, if it is supported by my tax dollars, how is it free?

With this mentality as shown above, why don't we just make all items pay as you go. How about we charge each auto owner a road tax for the number of miles they drive per year. If you are going to cut tax spending do it proportionately across the board.

By your logic I should pay no school tax, since I have no school children. I've never filed a police report, why should I pay for them? The point is that some things are for the good of all, even if all the people don't use them. But if you're advocating a pay for use policy, well, as a retired person with grown children I'll let you handle your share and I'll handle mine.

This is good news. The arts people and the arts council have been getting a free ride for too long. If you need this placebo so much, fund it yourselves.

But what about the arts in the school district? They're not going to hire anyone to replace those teachers who retire; yet they can hire extra positions on the top....how many assistants to other assistants do we need?

If it was up to the parents , why do we need teachers then?

Find another excuse for your union members, that one won't fly any longer!

maybe if the students were'nt distracted by other things they could focus on what they are there for!

So...you don't want to fund the "arts".

That's exactly the sort of comment I'd expect from backwoods, uncultured citizens.

And that's WHY some of you are backwoods, uncultured citizens.

Ain't nothing wrong with simple livin', but some of you folks are simply "simple".

"Culture" isn't only for the rich, high and mighty, college-educated citizens, it brings beauty, joy and knowledge to ALL citizens smart enough to embrace it.
