Had mine taken last night in LA. We had company over for dinner, so I parked my 94 Toyota pickup on the street next to our apartment. I got in my truck for work the next morning and it sounded like the Indy 500. At least they left the hardwear lying on the street. The next time will be harder for the assholes. Anybody know of an auto parts store in LA where I can buy one? The ones online like JC Whitney are not authorized for use in CA. Everywhere else in the country is ok, but not CA.

Hi everyone. I live in SC and I work a full time job at a local plant. I also buy scrap cat converters on the side. I have known several people who have stolen converters and I can say that the majority of them are druggies. Every cat that I purchase is a risk I take because there are no identification marks on them. I have been pulled over with 20-100 cats in my truck and held for hours only to be released because I keep all my paperwork and I wright receipts out to all I buy from. The thieves out there are really hurting the ones who are making an honest income dealing cats. Please do not assume all people who deal with converters to be crackheads or thieves! I work hard to support my family legally! Thanks. And if any of you need any info on converters, don't hesitate to ask... Oh and all you Toyota owners out there, be careful because your vehicles have some of the more valuable cats on them and are by far the easiest to remove..

Frank, if you know the druggies who steal converters and do not report them you are part of the problem. If you but from them then you are an accessory to the crime. Think about it; what percent of the cats brought to you are not stolen. How many cats are you buying that was stolen (Theft by receiving)I just hope there is a detective on here who can track you down via the e-mail address you used to admit your part. I'll gladly do my part in passing the information you are providing to the proper authorities. It's just a matter of time and you'll be spending a little time with the people who are stealing them. Be a "real man" and turn in those druggies before they drag you down with them.

RockinFalcon, you misunderstood my post. I said that I knew of druggies that had stolen converters, and they were caught and convicted. I did not say that I purchased cats from them. Feel free to report any information to any type of authority about any info I have provided. A few years back I went to the sherrifs office in my county and talked with the sheriff and a deputy about what I do and gave them my information in case they ever had any local thefts so they could reach me about the possible purchase of any stolen cat. I hope I have cleared this up for you.

And look, I was just trying to be helpful. I can see why others wouldn't try to though. It's because of people like that ROKINFALCON guy steriotyping everyone who deals with converters. To any other curious folk who don't claim to know it all, feel free to ask any converter question you may have. Thanks and have a blessed day!

Last night in front of my house in N. Miami someone cut about a 4 ft piece of my exhaust including the Catalytic converter off my '97 Toyota 4Runner. I've had this car for about 11 years and never even knew this kind of thing happened. Today I went out to start it and I thought I was getting bombed it was so loud! So I immediately brought the car down to my mechanic who said that because of the reckless way the thieves cut it off, it's going to cost me a total of $1000. This is what is so mind boggling. The thief gets $20-200 for the part while I'm out $1000! And what if he comes back in a couple months when I've found the money to fix it?
He knows where I live! It's so violating when someone rips you off like that!
I did find a device online that you can get for around $150 called the catclamp. Does anyone know if these work?

I've been thinking the same as one of you guys. We should demand Toyota manufactures to build these cars with protected converters. They are not doing anything because it's a business for them. The more frequent converters are stolen, the more profitable for them. Who knows...maybe they themselves are buying these converters to replace them on our cars.

When was your catalytic converter stolen? I live in Costa Mesa and mine was stolen the night of 1-1-12 coincidentally I just had my truck smogged and passed makes me wonder if possibly one of the workers stole it since they had my address etc. Just a thought.

4 scumbags busted in Roseville, CA yesterday where an epidemic of thefts has been occuring. Yeah! Sadly, more scumbags out there. Readers, go through all these threads before buying an aftermarket anti-theft device. I almost laid out $300 for a device for my Toyota Tacoma until I learned that 1) bolt cutters or a cutting wheel will sever the cables and/or the perp will just end up cutting upstream and downstream from the device resulting in even more expensive repairs. I've lowered my comprehensive deductible to $ 50 as I verified this is treated as vandalism and therefore covered.
