I have four children in the Southfield Public School system. It seems we continue to have difficult times with turnover (thoughout the system "top to bottom"). How much is this going to cost us!!!!!!!! This happened so fast, what's going on in the superintendents office? Why was this move kept from the public?

Southfield Public School District is out of control from Top to Bottom. Dr. Geltner is a woman of Excellence and SPS can't adhere to the word.
Not sure what it will take or who can help.

As former student of SPS and now a SPS sub teacher, I see way too many sub teachers in the schools. Are the teachers tired of the students' behavioral problems that seem to be worse today than yesteryears or is there a lack of committment on the teachers' behalf? Parents please do your jobs at home so the teaching staff can have less stressful days.

Children should not be up rooted in the middle of the school year. If parents are having financial problems. Due to the economy or illiness and you need help. What if one day you lose everything including your health. How would it feel if you were in this position. These are children not numbers and you wonnder about behavior. Children do have feeling!!!!

I am a current student at SLHS and i feel that instead of focusing on this dress code and a mean superintendent, how about you think about the education these students are getting? We honestly are not learning anything in school and are not getting the right education to even help us in the future and because of this complications, im transferring and maybe in time southfield will realize that its not about this pointless dress code or the super, its about the education.

The problems go WAY beyond any one person's poor judgment, lack of leadership skill, or even racism.
SPS schools are mere shadows of the excellent learning institutions they used to be.
I worked in SPS for a year, when Dr. Geltner served as Superintendent. I watched as students ruled the halls, and the weak administration bowed to the will of abusive parents and students. Two examples to illustrate my predicament (and why I left, despite my love of teaching):
Example 1.)
I had a student who had come into one of the district high schools carrying a 1.2. She'd already failed the class I was teaching 2 years running, and at the end of the year had a 1.4. When I came to teach, she would scream at me, she'd "sneak" out the back door (I reported this, admin did nothing about it), she'd been caught cheating multiple times, and she refused any extra help. She would incite the other students in the class to throw things, swear, cheat, and vandalize walls with defamatory graffiti. She physically attacked me twice. She was suspended for egregious offenses multiple times – which she used to get her hair and nails done. I went to a meeting to deal with the complaints this girl's mother had made. The mother had complained to Geltner and implied that *I* was the cause of this girl's failure. Instead of doing her job and kicking the girl out of the district (oh, and did I mention the girl was already kicked out of Detroit Public schools, where she was actually a resident?) Geltner wasted my and the admin's time in meetings, and gave me a poor evaluation for "poor skills dealing with parents." It's *my* fault that the mom and child were abusive and manipulative liars? It's *my* fault that the admin can't handle students and parents? Pardon my lack of eloquence and decorum, but fuck that.
Example 2.)
One day I hear screaming coming from the room next to mine with a sub teaching. I walk into the hallway adjoining our rooms, and I address the unruly classroom, but upon returning to my own, I notice that a girl is in MY office at MY desk, on MY phone. I walk back to the sub's room, and ask if he gave her permission for this. He said no - in fact, he'd told her twice not to go in there. I tried to tell the girl to leave my office, nicely, and then firmly. She screamed at me and refused, since she was "talking to her momma.” Now, I should note: School policy CLEARLY indicated that she could only use the MAIN OFFICE phone to make calls, and ONLY with permission.
I was called into the main office for a meeting with this girl and her mother, during which I was berated for half an hour for some unnamed offense. When I suggested that we try and focus the meeting into effectively resolving the actual issues, was told by the administrator, just listen to what the parent is saying. After another twenty more minutes of this abuse, I'd had enough and said "this meeting is over, I have work to do," and walked out.
Upset over this, I asked the building representative what I should do about this abuse. Despite the fact that she was elected by the staff to represent them in just such cases of abuse of staff members, she basically turned to me and said "this conversation never happened."
The administration in SPS clearly is incapable of controlling the high school's population, and creating a healthy, safe, and supportive learning and working environment. The school act more as prisons then and learning institutions. The parents of the district are more interested in getting their kids the right outfits then in getting them to learn something. Half the teachers are complacent - or selectively oblivious to the workings (or not workings) of the school.

If you do send your kids to this school, make sure you are:
1.) getting your kids into the honors track,
2.) supporting your kids academically, and
3.) CONTROLLING YOUR KIDS.(they are KIDS, not ADULTS - YOU BE THE ADULT) then they can get a decent education anywhere.

I agree, it definitely starts at home. If a child cannot be controlled at home, then they cant be controlled anywhere. Secondly, schools went to hell with all this corporal punishment and childrens rights bull$#@*&^. If they were doing as they are expected (LEARNING), none of these other things would be issues. Why the administration and mainly the parents do not support the teachers is beyond me. The parents send these little hoodlums to school with no home training, and then have the nerve to get mad because the teaches will not allow there child to abuse them.

The administration need there a@$%^ whooped also. There job is to adminstrate and keep order, not be manipulated by the parents and children.

"Clean House" the whole system just needs to start with employees who can stand up for the teachers and the purpose of educating our children, and let the dissatified parent take there bad a&*(%$ kids somewhere else. Work with the families that want there children to succeed and be successful.

Southfield Public Schools needs some new board members. They are all to willing to do whatever their administration, who are apparently not well educated, wants them to do. A recall is needed
