Many local schools plan to close early again today

Most public and private schools in the region closed early Monday, and many plan to close early today, as scorching heat made non-air-conditioned classrooms unbearable for learning, educators said.

I'm all for letting them out early and lowering my property taxes. I could put better use to that wasted money.

So why do they want an increase in the school budget...for kids and teachers to sit around in the hallway...what a waste.

Yesterday all's that you heard were complaints about the children getting out early because of the heat. Listen, It's hard enough to be a kid these days as it is. All our kids grow up to fast. We are adults here. Have we forgotten the subject here? Were talking about children! It's our duty and responsiblity to protect & nurture our kids. They are our future. These kids that you speak of today are the one's that one day will be dying for our country. Can't we all come together? Isn't nice sometimes to think of others before ourselves? So they take a couple of hours off because of the heat. Let's take these kids under our wings and comfort them a little. These days kids aren't allowed to be kid's anymore. I support their decision on closing schools early due to the heat. Does it inconvenience me a little?(Yes)However, as a parent it's my responsiblity to make sure they are taken care of and I'm glad the school is looking after the well being of my children.

Kids are babies, they should just send them to school with numerous water bottles and babypowder to slap on to avoid swamp butt.

My kids had finals yesterday and the teachers kept the lights off due to the heat. They said it was very difficult to concentrate with the lights out in sweltering heat, no water with a good 25+ sweaty bodies in the room. Yuck. I say good idea to let the schools out a little early due to this heat. It's gross and difficult trying to study/learn in this sweltering heat. All of you folks that are complaining... sure you're sitting in your nice air conditioned offices or houses whining that kids got out an hour or two early. Give me a break. Shut up already.

One more time...
GENERATIONS of kids SURVIVED going to school in HOT weather LONG before there was A/C in schools...most of US adults here included. STOP babying these kids...this is why they will NEVER survive when it comes to living in the real world.

The world DOES not stop due to heat...businesses STILL run a/c or no a/c...what message are we giving them when we cater to adversity?

How is it the teachers fault if it over 90 degrees in the room. If you think the job is so easy then become a teacher. How hot is it in your diuble wide.

Listen, Times have changed and you need to change with them. Back when we went to school no it wasn't air conditioned. However, we didn't have 25-30 per class or all these allergies as they do today. Sometimes it's better to play things safe instead of waiting for a tragedy to occur. Because the should of, could of,and would of doesn't matter. We all don't have a crystal ball in front of us. We only do the best we can. You can't please everyone!

MORE rationalizing...

Sorry MY classes had at least 25 people in them and this WAS the 70's-80's..AND we had plenty of kids with allergies, and all types of medical conditions....Hell I was ONE with severe allergies..I FREAKIN survived..

STOP BABYING kids today...this is WHY they expect the world to drop for them and why they cannot handle what life deals them in the future!

I agree with Mother of 4. Look - I'm from central Texas where it isn't uncommon to have 98,99,100+ temperatures with 97% humidity. But when you live there, you do get used to it. Your body adjusts, your blood thins....the same way our blood thickens up here to handle the cold. A heat wave like this, when there hasn't been any slow build up, can be very dangerous for young children and old folks. Everybody is right, when we were kids things were definitely harder....but you don't just put kids through misery just to prove your point. Besides - it isn't just about the hot classrooms, it's also the buses that take anywhere between an hour and an hour and a half to get these kids home - none of which have AC and are driving around like ovens with little kids inside. I'm sure it isn't worth the money to put AC in the schools and buses for random heat waves like this, so let's just all calm down and let the kids enjoy their brief pre-summer break. Go to the pool, cool off and simmer down!

I love all the rationalizing..

Yup, Are You...IT IS ONLY for a couple of days...so WHY not just SHOW the kids the REALITY that when we HAVE hot days we STILL need to go on with what we need to do in life?

It is called a LIFE LESSON. Preparing them FOR the future...
that there will be times in life where we NEED to face adversity..

They expect the world to drop for them? I don't know what world it is that your in. But as I see it. The world is dropping on them. These kids are our future. Handle? They do handle things very well. It seems as if you can't handle things! Like I said, I agree and I'm glad that were not waiting for a tragedy to occur before something is in place.Times have changed and it wasn't the children's decision to let the schools out early. I'm sorry you are so negative about life in general. I'll pray for you.

lady from Brewster....where did it all go so wrong for you in life? I don't think it is healthy to be that bitter. For goodness sake, we are talking about whether or not kids get out of school early for sweltering temperatures. Do you get all upset like this when they cancel school for snow? If so, might I suggest you just stop reading the news if it gets you this upset and angry at children. It can't be good for you....or the children...or the ALL CAPS button on your keyboard.

No darling it is called reality. People baby kids today and then they expect the world to cater to them like everyone did as they grew up.

As a child, I was taught...that you need to DEAL with adverse situations and this strengthens your character and resolve...well it does. I see the kids today and how they expect things to change because they do not like it if is not what they want or they do not want to deal with it or do it.

And many parents feed into this...
