The children have to be fed at the schools, otherwise they will eat at the corner stores: chips, nacho's, honey buns, candy, and soda.
I also " in the 60's " made my own breakfast and brown-bagged it in grades 7,8, and 9.
By age 11, I had a paper route, cut lawns, and shoveled snow. I started working at 15 doing grounds maintenance. I always had money.
Things have changed alot since then.

Yes, unfortunately, I know first hand of the poverty; however, despite everything, many of these kids overcome this and become very productive adults. I agree with the majority of these people, let suga' mama sell her gold earings and lexus and make your own food. Besides, if you are so concerned and need to feel like an advocate for these kids, give up your cushy Milford school job and go teach the sugared up inner-city kids........."yea, I thought so". How do you know "teacher" teaches in Milford? I work with the kids in Bridgeport every day - in a high school - yet I show up as Fairfield. Is my job cushy? I wouldn't give it up for any rich district - I work where I'm most needed and live where I can...

My opinion wrote: Re: FREE lunch...Back in the 1960s and 1970s, we ate breakfast at home and brought our lunch to school everyday. Why should the Bridgeport tax payers pay for kid's food (and healthcare!) when their parents should be providing it? I don't see why the schools have to provide food for these kids for FREE! I think many of these parents take advantage of the "system" while the rest of us are trying to make ends meet. Get a job and support your own family! I agree!! These are the same students who wear $100 sneakers and $200 jerseys and $50 hats EVERYDAY!! They all have smartphones, i pods ect..If they can afford those items, they can afford food. Not all the students are like this, but many of them do take advantage. Welfare isn't a lifetime benefit. It should only be temporary. I feel bad for the real people who need these services!!

teacher wrote: "WHEN IS IT OUR RESPONSIBLITY?" You sound so unempathetic to the plight of hunger in this world. Food is a fundamental right for every child in the United States and the world. CHildren should not go hungry. They should have shelter, clothing, and love. Yes, parents abuse the system, but go after the parents. Don't punish the children who did not ask to be born into their situation. We spend millions feeding children in Africa and billions on an ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanitistan, we can spend a little of feeding children in our country, too. IT is our responsiblity- Additionally,to those who ask why it is "our" responsibility, there IS a federal law that makes it mandatory to provide free or reduced lunch to those who qualify. Unfortunately, the federal reimbursement to school systems does not meet what it costs a food services dept to make/supply the lunch in the first place. Also, undortunately, there are those who will abuse the system and try to get whatever they can for free.

Hey Milford Rez, I only speak for the children, not their lazy parents. I never said I want to or should have to deal with the problems in Bridegport. I am talking about children that actually do go to school hungry everywhere. Unfortunetly parents are lazy, but some children do need these handouts. Bridgeport does need to fix this. It perpetuates a culture of lazyness. I am not saying all or most but there are circumstances that call for these services. DCF should be involved in them. What I am saying is that Bridgeport is too lazy to figure out which students really need this and don't want to spend the time or money to figure it out as in my first comment. Poverty in 3rd world countries is quite different then poverty here, I don't even think it compares. I am just talking about making sure children have food to eat. I know children learn better when they have the proper nutrients and aren't hungry. What does changing jobs have to do with what this? You say many children in 3rd world countries overcome this, well they don't. If they do it with a lot of help from countries and people that help them. Research India's caste system and you will realize that it is a cyle of extreme poverty that they can not escape. I am not sure if you read all my posts. I never said I was for giving lazy parents handouts. Welfare in this country is way out of hand. I am not advocating for anyone except children that are in desparate situations where they go to bed hungry. Most Bridgeport families can feed their children. If they can have babies they can feed their children.

If you notice in the next comment I corrected myself. Get a grip, everyone makes typos-geez. Are you that arrogant as to think you never make mistakes? When people type quickly they amke spelling errors. We get over it. I hope you will, too. I am a teacher, but I don't claim to be perfect, nor would I chastise someone for their spelling on a forum. Keep to the issues.
