When I was young my summer was spent riding my bike from here to timbuktu! I would leave right after breakfast and my Mother would shout, "Be back by lunchtime", and off I would go. No agenda, no plan.....just to where ever my legs could peddle to. Gone are those days for our children and our children's children. Now we can't let our children out of the yard without an adult to watch them for fear there might be a sexual predator lurking around the corner, or some other kind of looney out there waiting to prey upon them in one way or another. Yes, times HAVE changed. In so many ways. It's sad. Thank you so much for the kind words. You are a beautiful person also! As my Grandma used to say..."I can see your Soul shining" What a bunch of crap. Our kids will have a lot more advantages than we ever had. You're fooling yourself if you think there are more sexual preditors now than 40 years ago. Just more convictions for it. Most kids today would rather sit in front of the computer and play video games than go out and play kick the can or ride their bike. I blame todays parents for not raising their kids to be street smart and being responsible for their own actions.

And if you ask me there are not ENOUGH convictions for it, and certainly not HARSH ENOUGH sentences for it. Again, times HAVE changed. Doesn't matter WHO you "blame", that's the fact.

The house at the age of 24 is not a necessity. 45K in income is not enough for 180K mortgage. They couldn't afford a house. They should not have bought it.
A stay at home mom is a luxury few can afford. Again, there is a trade-off: both parents work and buy a house; a wife stays at home but the couple lives in an apartment. American Dream is not about having everything this second. American Dream is about working hard, learning skills, saving and then gradually improving one's life style.
I came to the US with nothing. Yet I am doing just fine. Why? Because I didn't buy a house at the age of 24, I rented a one bedroom at the age of 24 and saved money. When I bought my first place - a condo - it was something I could afford.
Stop blaming everyone else. Blame yourself and think about what you can do to help yourself.

I feel for this family, but they should be able to make ends meet in Minnesota on $42K a year. This isn't a story of the system failing individuals. This is a story of individuals failing themselves. They are mismanaging their money. That is not the governments fault. It is there. Go to the library and learn to build a budget, discover how much house you can afford, and save. Looking at the photos of their house in the article, they were able to fully furnish the child's room and a playroom. Start selling items to raise cash. You aren't guaranteed anything in life. You have to earn it. The only thing the government should provide is a protection of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness...not a bigger house than they can afford and all expenses paid. In the end, they need to find a way to cut expense or increase income. They shouldn't receive or expect a handout.

This family made three crucial mistakes that led them to the financial situation they are in: (1) They did not build up the employment skills (such as a college education) that lead to higher paying jobs, (2) They bought a house they can not afford (2.5X-3.0X annual salary would have been affordable, or $100K-$120K as a target price), (3) They had kids before building a sound financial footing to take care of them properly. There is no Government conspiracy keeping them down. Their problems resulted directly from their poor life choices.

Just deal with your life, be responsible, and stop your wining. Seriously, it is pathetic. Why should anyone feel sorry for you? Do you really think you have it so bad? Look around lady... you got yourself into this situation, now figure a way to get yourself out. I for one do not want my tax dollars going to help winers like you out. Gosh, just shut up already!

I find it odd someone with a $42k salary would buy a $190k house, that doesn't sound responsible on her part to me, especially considering I paid a lot less than that for my house and I made about twice as much at the time.

Wow, stay at home mom at 24 with a husband that makes 42K/year plus OT and healthcare. Seems like the difference between the American Dream and being the "fed up forgotten" American is a budget. If she worked the same job as her husband with the overtime, they'd be one of those evil rich families making six-figures, all before the age of 30. Amazing how hard work seems to be the difference between the "forgotten" ones and the "privileged".(Why not budget now, not buy too much home, and stay home while the kids are little and then go make more later? its what most of us did)
