City plans to let New Yorkers choose gender

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery.

So the NYC Board of Health is taking it's turn at playing God. This should be fun.

"one who knows"... you obviously don't know any trans people otherwise you wouldn't think it's so dumb.

Or do you think we should be required to get surgery, even if we can't afford it, just to change our ID and avoid discrimination? You think we should be forced to be out on drivers licenses and whatnot? You think that's a great thing for trans people?

Why do you all hate us so much? What is your basic mental damage? You can't live in the same country as people who are different from you?

Likely Voter: Leave your God out of the law, please.

By the way, Spain just passed a similar law on the national level and no one's complained. The world didn't come to an end. And a lot of women and men were helped very much.

Look, we're a tiny minority of people. No, it's not a "typical NY thing" nor are we typical anywhere. That doesn't mean we're inhuman and people can treat us like dirt.

Why can't everyone just respect each others choices and beliefs without it becoming a three ring circus or national debate? I for one am so sick and tired of people preaching right and wrong. Good god. Do what you want as long as you aren't hurting me..Have at it. The political correctness is getting way out of hand..If you like it, do it, if it hurts another don't. Other wise...don't worry about it.

one who knows, I'll try educating you some so you can know a little more.

Here's part of the situation: I don't want to have to tell everyone who wants my ID that I'm trans. I could face a lot of violence because of that. So I need to get my ID changed. For me personally, I got it changed by court order (my drivers license) but the US gov't demands that I have a new birth certificate to change my passport, and after Real ID goes into effect, unless I get a new birth certificate, they're going to change my DL back to male, subjecting me to potential violence every time I show my DL to someone. Got it? Not to mention discrimination from boss or landlords if I have to show them. And banks and hospitals... you get the picture.

To get a new birth certificate in most states you have to get surgery. In the state I'm from they usually don't even accept that.

What this means is that the government is forcing people to cut up their genitalia, even if they wouldn't otherwise, in order to get ID that will not subject them to the threat of violence.

It's no one's business, especially not the government, to track my genitalia. They should get the heck out of my pants, okay? That's what this rule helps with.

I don't GIVE A FLYING **** about what you do or do not think of issues of birth, death, gender, sex, biology, culture, identity, change, democrat, republican, "political correct" or whatever. I really don't care. I don't want to change my birth certificate to make some political statement or philosophical statement. I need to change it to live my life without the constant threat of discrimination or violence.

I agree with you, I am a straight female and believe I am open minded and accepting, but If handed identification for whatever purpose and it had the opposite gender, I would be caught off gaurd, like most. I can't imagine being "stuck in the wrong body" I wish everyone hapiness, regardless of gender, color sexual orientation. When we start telling people who to love or who they are, we won't stop. Before you know it there will be laws stating only blondes can date blondes and redheads reheads..its ludicris. Good luck in your life.

Topix is sooooo addictive! I have to stop sometimes since I get too into it. I've never done myspace. I'm in my 30's too (egad!). And straight too... meaning I like guys, in case that's confusing to some people! lol

I should be locked up? You understand I would survive for maybe a couple hours if I was ever put in jail? Is that what you want? Whhat a horrible, hateful person you are.

I know a couple other transsexual women who have been in prison, who are much much tougher than I am. They're permanently scarred for life, and one of them is absolutely out of her mind with PTSD and need constant therapy and can barely even talk about what happened.

How could you wish that on anyone at all, ever? Especially people who've never harmed anyone in their life?

But you need your monsters I guess. Does it make you feel more important to have someone you can pick on? Does it make you feel good to hurt people who are already often in not so good circumstances? You get some sadistic pleasure from that?

Ok you have some valid points- no one should be subjected to violence for no reason at all- i may have some thinnking to do. OK- so you are saying that you are a woman in a man's body and like men, so you are straight?

Well I'm not exactly in a man's body. Not a lot of guys are hairless with d cups, hips, etc... at least as far as I know! This is why I can't get "male" on my license.

I couldn't be mistaken for a man even if I wanted to. I guess I could become a drag king and put on a fake beard or something. LOL.

p.s. And thank you for being open minded. Not everyone is, and I totally respect you for doing that. Thank you.
