Do like my parents did back in the 40s, head north, lots of work in the Chicago, Northwest Indiana area. Never was much in Saline County for work except farming and mining, correct me if I'm wrong.

Lots of places-schnucks,lowes, wal mart-big retailers have 2nd shift work. barbacks for the bigger places in city. Drive a parts truck or pull parts for Weirs. After 2 years experience get a CDL and make $ 30,000 or $ 50,000 if you go otr.

IF you really want to work jobs are out there. These may not be glamorous but they pay the bills. So you might have to work 50-60 hours but why not?If you want to pay your bills then there should not be a problem.

I have done nastier work and was paid minimum wage but paid the bills until better employment became available.

Certainly I prefer to have a good union job, but if not available I worked as needed to pay our bills.

Most GC Steel mills are gone, RB furnace factory gone, car factories in St. Louis nearly all gone, NAFTA allowed our jobs to cross the Rio Grande or Pacific Ocean.

Union pride-Yes, a good thing and important. This and company owners built this country and economic system from nothing in 200 years. But times have changed. The 3rd world countries will work for a couple bucks a day.

Paying my bills, saving for a rainy and retirement-I prefer to do that than sit at home and whine and collect unemployment.

People out of work-get work and keep looking for an upgrade if you want it. Your best bet is to be employed and stand tall when knocking on doors.

Steelmills are not dead, and there is a big turnover taking place right now, my youngest son just took a UAW job at Fords assembly plant at 130th and Torrrnce on Chicagos southside. midnights and 4 10 hour shifts. OT available. The mIlls are in contract talks right now and as soon as it's inked they will be hiring, over 50 just retired in July at Arcelor Mittal East. Also the largest industrial job in the US is going on right now at BP Amoco in Whiting In, projected to last at least another 12 years.

Sarge,
Agreed-unions remain and are a good thing, but unfortunately unions jobs/shops/industries are not as prevalent now as in recent decades. Our national and regional economic base has changed.

My point is for people out of work or wanting to upgrade their employment-we have to work harder to find good work than in decades past.

Luck is when hard work/preparation and opportunity meet. Most successful people make their own luck.

True but what I'm getting at is you have to go where the jobs are, like my parents and their siblings did back in the 40s. Eldorado isn't a hot bed of Industry. So unless you want to farm or stay in school and go into the Medical Field I don't see any other option except the Military.
