I agree with you - but seems we always have someone out there doing something stupid. Animals, on the other hand, do things for survival, nothing more. The have no choices in life, nor does any other domestic animal that we decide to care for. I am a firm believer if you can't take care of your pet as a member of your family you shouldn't have one. PS: JBW your a joke - you are proably the coldest person on earth. Comments like yours are pathetic. I take care of my pet as a pet, not as a member of my family. My dog & cat are pets, not dependants, they don't cause me to get more of a return every year, they're not eligible for my health care, they don't go on the deed, they're ot part of my life insurance, technically & legally they are not family members, they are pets, just as my husband & son are not pets they are family members, vice verse with the dog & cat. It sounds nice to say they are members of our family, sounds cute & loving & call, but technically they are not. I love my dog & cat to death BUT, like I always say, if the house were on fire, I'd grab my son & husband before the dog & cat, sorry.

All I can say with some of the comments here, is that if I'm a 'bleeding heart' for trying to save the earth for my children and grandchildren, and treat animals with compassion and get laws like this passed, so be it. It's a compliment.
Humans have a zillion laws, and don't follow them anyway. Like someone else said, humans have the ability to make choices. Animals don't.
And if that makes you angry (those of us that try to help animals and preserve the earth), then we're doing our job.

Yea, your right, my point is if you can't take care of them in a responsible way, no need to have them. I would never put my animals ahead of my family either, I didn't mean my post to sound that way, I just feel they deserve the best we can give them. Didn't mean to offend you.

This legislation is much needed. I hope the enforcement of it follows. In my opinion, animals have more common sense than humans. They only kill to survive or protect themselves. When they have offspring - they protect them and take care of them...more than some humans do. The problem isn't the animals - it's people. Greed in particular. Am I a "bleeding heart"? Probably by some people's stnadards. How do I feel about that? Great. There should be more people in the world who care about people, animals, the environment and their families. The world would be a better place. I once read "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." If history teaches us anything - it should teach us these words are true.

Many years ago I belonged to Greenpeace, I was your average late 80s early 90s tree hugger save the planet & all that goes with it person. As time went on I experienced life & the good & the many bad times it had to offer. I experienced the loss of loved ones & the loss of children, including two beloved pets to cancer one of which I still have her ashes in a box. After watching loved ones slowly die of cancer, having friends get killed, losing my babies, & a cancer scare for myself,I was done with over-worrying about trees & thinking the planet is the top priority. I learned from tragedy that certain things take precedence over others things, you never really see this until you've lost a child. I have a 2 yr old now & I spend everyday with him as if it were our last together. I've spent much time pushing to get certain laws & things changed in healthcare pertaining to pregnancy & pregnancy loss, I've donated my time to March of Dimes & to various causes for cancer, & yet some expend their energy on dogs? They can dow aht they want but I find it a slap in the face of all humans who suffer greatly for humans ARE, whether people like it or not, first precedence over animals, nothing anyone can say will change my mind about this. Sometimes we worry about the things we shouldn't & don't worry enough about the things we should. You can save whatever you want to, I choose to live everyday like it's my last & cherish what I have right now & not obsess about the future.

Susan you didn't offend me, takes alot to do that. I agree though that if someone cannot properly care for a pet then there's no reason to have one, or they can give the pet to someone who can care for them.

Cindy, some animals EAT their young, so I wouldn't go as far as to say animals have better common sense than people. Humans also have archaic animal instincts to protect themselves, it's sometimes called the "fight or flight" syndrome. If you feel humans don't care for their offspring as much as animals do, then why not lobby to keep children from being abused or something along those lines? Why overlook the human & go right for the pussycat? In my many years of being around these animal activists I've found that a great majority of them who are strongly passionate about these issues tend to be childless, NOT ALL, just more often than not. I've also found some who can only get along with an animal since they can't get along with other people. Again, not all, but a great majority.

You can save whatever you want to, I choose to live everyday like it's my last & cherish what I have right now & not obsess about the future. Neither of us is wrong, as we both cherish our own causes. Certainly if it were the life of my child or my dogs, I would choose my child! All I'm saying is that animals should be treated with respect, not as just another 'thing' to be thrown away when no longer wanted, or as if they don't experience pain and suffering. And by the way, I do have 4 grown children, 2 grandchildren, a great husband, and many wonderful friends. I've experienced cancer myself as well, and also lost a child. Be well, and thanks for what you do as well.
