If YOU think they should stay in their cells and read, I'd say YOU are the one soft on crime. If these inmates were forced to do hard labor, they might think twice about committing the next crime. Might being the operative word here.

I agree. Forced labor. But only for violent criminals with identifiable victims. End the drug war and decriminalize drug use. Get addicts help. Devote the additional resources to fight poverty. End capital punishment (in the few remaining draconian states its still holding on). If you rob a convenience store and you're looking at 90 days of bustin rocks, you may think twice. For pedophiles, its mental treatment, bread and water, and road work. For pig pedophiles, its signage worn on the chest forever and forced labor in public places with any vigilantiism "tolerated" much in the same way other pigs tolerate their pedophile and criminal co-workers.
