I don't know if this topic will spark debate or not but I'll throw it out there. I get absolutely livid about this. Why isn't birth control mandatory for mothers who receive any type of welfare/aid to dependant children benefits? I think that if you have to get government assistence to raise the children that you already have then you should have to agree to not have any additional children and that a mandatory birth control should be required in order for you to receive your monthly check.

Many states already have welfare rules that after a certain number of children you get no additional money for additional children, though you do get more food stamps, and health care coverage for the additional child. Which often means that all of the children in the family suffer because there are more children but no additional money. And, under the present welfare rules, after 5 years of cash welfare, all cash payments end - period. In addition, in most states there are rigidly enforced requirements that even before the 5 years of assistance ends, the parent(s) must be in either jobs or training for jobs for somewhere between 20 and 30 hours a week. Under the present rules, there is no such thing as someone continuing to have children and sitting on a couch and cashing checks - 5 years and out is the absolute rule.
Any thoughts about this?

We have so much government infringing on our private lives, now, I don't know if this would be a good idea or not?
However, the other day I walked into where my spouse was watching Judge Judy. There was a white woman that was living off the taxpayers. She had 5 children, 2 by one man, 2 by another, and a newborn by a "live-in" partner that was not working. According to the woman, she had never worked, but continued to have babies.

I don't have the answers to all of the welfare problems, but I'm tired of supporting mothers and absent dads, that continue to have babies they cannot afford. There are too many 'free' birth control measures available, but they are not used. What's the answer, I don't know, but something should be done.

Wow! I can't believe I found someone who has spoken up about this topic. I have been of the opinion that after 2 children, birth control or sterilization should be mandatory (sterilization sounds harsh, but birth control can make some people ill from the hormones). From a taxpayers point of view: My husband and I are aware of how many children we can afford both mentally and financially. He was sterilized after our fourth child. Why isn't it o.k. to impose limits for people who may not have the resources to impose such limits for themselves? From a mother's point of view: I have 4 children as I stated. Keeping up with all four is sometimes very difficult. I feel for the children who have a LOT of siblings, as the parental attention is spead thin (not just for love, but for other necessities such as doctors' appointments and help with homework!) From a religious standpoint: I know that many people say mandating birth control would be crossing the line b/t church and state. But is it? Would it not likely help the children already in the household to be cared for as needed?

I have to agree with Smiles. We have too much government, now, but something must be done. I don't think forced or mandatory sterilization is the answer, but I do think when a parent has been on welfare since day one, after the second one, welfare should be shut down or certainly severely curtailed. They can be offered birth control or sterilization?
Or... look at the other side of the coin, what about the men that proliferates too many children that never pays child support? And, there are plenty of those. What about a mandatory vasectomy?
Something must be done to break the chain of having too many children that we, the taxpayers, support.
Touchy subject here, not to mention a slippery slope.

another thing with the welfare system that really gets under my skin is the mommies that have so many kids and draw all that money and use it to buy drugs instead of taking care of the children i look at it this way my husband has to take drug test for his job as do many others i think that people who get welfare should also have to take a drug test to get the assistants. and to go even futher break down the checks send out vouchers for their bills, household needs, clothing, etc. stop just giving them cash.
i know that everyone needs help ever once and awhile and it makes it so much harder to get the help when someone really needs it, if so are abusing it.

Too many abuse the system, that's a fact. Others have found a lucrative way to live without having to work or earn their own way.
You are absolutely correct. Welfare checks are too often spent on drugs and alcohol and the children do without, but I doubt anything will ever be done about it or it would've already taken place.

Mandatory birth control carries endless judicial, moral, religious, and legal implications, implications that no post has even begun to address critically. I admit in this forum, I'm incapable of addressing all the facets, but I would like to point that mandatory birth control for females implicates the female only. As we all know, in its most basic sense, men and women are equally responsible for conception. I don't support policies that place limits on any person's body--male or female. However, proponents who even consider the policy of mandatory birth control just for women are unjustly exonerating a man's responsibility in the act of sex, therefore further oppressing women by inappropriately assigning them as the proprietors of conception.

Why sterilize anyone? Don't need to. Just don't pay any benefits for any children after the first 2. If there's no financial incentive the birth rate will take care of itself. People aren't stupid, lazy and greedy maybe, but not stupid.

I agree...MANDITORY BIRTHCONTROL NOW! For all on welfare, inorder to get out of prision (men and women), drug users, etc. I'll support the first child but the mother needs to be sterilized or on some form of Birth Control. And remove the finanical incentative.

With all the mostly useless vaccinations that our school kids are required to have... make all from the age of 13 - graduation age receive the "bithcontrol shot".

Free vasectomy's to any man age 16 - 40 that wants one! Manditory if you are in prision or on welfare!

The problem is that it violates so many rights that the woman has not to mention the fact that its reinstating the belief that if an accidentaly pregnancy happens its the mother's fault

Well, the way I see it is that most people dont want to give any room. Some want to completely override religion and believes, others don't want to give up some beleives. The real problem is understanding the other side, so I will try taking a little nuetral ground.

Now, first off, providing hormone and/or surgical birth control is a must. An easy way out for some? Ya, but it provides easier access to long lasting forms of birth control.

Second, provide the option. There is no way to enforce manditory birth control unless people agree with it, so don't even try imposing your will on people.

Now, as for religion, I can't see why someone wouldn't give up a believe or two for the better of society. Overpopulation, dispite what most might think, is an issue. It is proven by the homeless who do try, but are shut out by those who are in a better situation in society.

In all, a few comprimises need to be made. It isn't about throwing away everything you believe, whichever side you stand with. Society, unless it works together, doesn't accomplish anything. That's why this issue won't be solved. There are hard-heads who will read this, and deny it as a whole, on both sides of line.

P.S, if I stated something spefic you would like to debate about, please respond to this.

I agree that something has to be done about this issue. I suggest that if you are on public assistance, all payments be permanently discontinued if you become pregnant with a 2nd child. No need for mandatory birth control as this will fix the problem. I have been a taxpayer all my adult life and no one offers to help me support my 2 kids and I don't appreciate supporting anyone elses. I had only 2 because I know that's what my husband and I can afford. It's also not fair for all these kids to be born into poverty. Let's think about what's best for the children.

Well if you folks know so much about all these welfare moms using dope all it takes is a phone call to the police, but you folks use a lot of assuming there, don't you. Now lets just hope some of you folks don't have to become welfare moms. You know loose that nice paying warlmart job or the one down at the BusyBee, or the local grocer. Or do you work at all. Maybe I and other tax payers are paying for some of you that are drawing food stamps. Now I just mentioned that to get your attention people because there are a lot of people getting welfare and food stamps, but I hope that the different programs help some people and keep a little food on the table and a roof over their head. There is not much enjoyment to being poor. And yes, there are paople that get on these programs that should not be on the program. But if you know one that is getting welfare or food stamps why don't you just report them. It is easy, just make a call. That is unless you are secretly drawing those stamps too. Hope you and your kids do not go to bed hungry to night!!

After the first child is born, a bill for the delivery of that child is presented to the mom & dad (if he can be identified), proof of the ability to pay must be provided (private ins., HMO, private funds, etc. BUT NOT MEDICAID). If no proof is provided then mom gets a mandatory all expense paid tubal, and dad gets a mandatory free vasectomy. No exceptions. Think of all the tax dollars that will be saved from not having to support members of the "parasitic class".

After all, if situations change, tubals and vasectomies are reversable. Our economy would improve drastically, many prisons would eventually close, our education system would be more efficient, our health care sysyem would be far more affordable, and life in America would be overall much more pleasant.

You people are day dreaming, no one should be forced to be sterlized. Now if you folks like the idea , just go ahead and get sterlized. And don't forget the people who loose their jobs, whickh may be one of you in the future -- are drawing some of those benefits. Especially when they run out of unemployeement benefits. Go ahead and try it it cna be reversed as Scott says. at least part of the time. Heck folks I have cut many hogs and made a few steers in my time. Just takes a good sharp blade and alittle know how and it becomes permanent. Even eat a few of those mountain oysters myself--chicken fried that is.

I do not believe we should pay for all these lazy people that have children and live off welfare. They should have to show up to a job 8 hours a day the same way I did and my girls did after they had their children. They should not be allowed to lay around all day and draw a check. Find the dead beat man and make him work.

my opinion is that the men should have their zippers sewn up permently and then their would no longer be a free sperm bank! It takes to to create those babies, both are responsible. How many men that were married or unmarried had babies with someone then left and don't pay child support. If Child support was enforced more, whether it is the woman or the man who pays the support then the state would not have to pay out so much money. Sterlization is an option for a;ll the people, man or woman. but the woman is blames moreso than the man. Both are guilty, equally. The name of the game is accountability. A little accountability will keep those pants zipped up and those legs crossed.

P.S. teach those kids about birth control at home and in school and the babies would not come so freely or often. Also show those kids the consequences if a baby is born and someone is responsible for the raising and they will bear the burden of cost. This little lesson will follow them into adulthood and life. Plave the burden on them where it needs to be placed. It is called responsibility. How dumb do you want you kids to be anyway. or dumb, knocked up -- smart is the way to go.
