As everyone knows, the tax rules are regarding elections and the promotion of a particular candidate. If a church blatently favors a candidate for elected office they can lose their tax exemption.

How do the actions of the Catholic church favor a candidate for an election? They don't. DAH!

I hope these extremists don't have any affect on the rights of Americans to hold differing views regarding moral issues. This suit is not worthy to be brought to the courts.

Here we go. Some people never learn. Instead of constructing a clear and positive informational campaign to inform and persuade Maine voters, they instead are going to sic the IRS on the Catholic Church. One would have thought that the California Prop 8 experience would have been instructive, but it appears not.
I sure as hell hope there are enough non-Catholic voters up there to carry the gay rights side, because you now just eliminated the possibility of getting the Catholics to vote for you, and most likely any mainline denominations of other faiths as well; after all, if you threaten one church you could turn around and do the same to them if they incur your wrath, right?.
Nice going.

The Catholic Church is Evil. This is beyond question and obvious.

ANY group that works to try to deny AMERICAN citizens their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, is, by definition, EVIL !

Not to mention their decades long (at least) institutionalized sexual abuse of children and their continued cover up of this EVIL.

The Catholic Church is EVIL and Americans MUST work to STOP them from furthering their narrow, UN-AMERICAN, depraved agenda to deprive Americans of their RIGHTS !

Yawn. Anything new, Daniel or same old catchphrases?

Go ahead and bitch, just don't cry about it when this gets defeated in Maine due to this type of stunt.

Sounds more like some manner of 'aides on the brain' rant. What a sad person you are.

I agree: let us work together and stop the Liberals from denying 4,000+ people per day their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

It's about time someone questioned the legality of "institutions" abusing their tax free status to perpetuate hatred and bigotry. Churches have abused their tax exempt status and have gotten away with it for centuries. Let's hope this will make "moralizers" think twice before infringing on others' rights. In a country that values the separation of church and state "God's law" has no place in civil law.

Wayne-

What's it's really "about time" for is for people to actually read and understand the tax code for non-profits.

If there was a drunk driving bill in front of the voters, MADD can and does gather petitions and lobby for their position without endangering their tax status.

Exact same laws that the RCC and other non-profits work under.

Funny how you are righteously indignant at the RCC for 'infringing on other's rights'(defined by you as them daring to disapprove of gay marriage) while you support a group trying to actually remove theirs via force of the state. Pot, kettle, black.

No wonder the Catholic Church is going out of business in the free world. Their leaders are a hateful group of wackjobs that have long outlived their prejudices. They are today's equivalent of Puritans. Instead of witches they choose to torture and deprive innocent Gay Americans of their civil rights in the name of their "god".? The Catholic Church is a corrupt religion full of hypocrits and political hacks disguised as holy men. Their tax exempt status should be revoked.

When I see how hateful the left is toward the RCC and Christianity in general, then I know the Church is correct and has God on it's side.

There is no way this will stand. Any religious group can support moral actions and referendums. The tax law was designed only so that no religious group could promote one candidate over another in elections. This is just petty vindictiveness from the gay rights group.

I've been brainwashed too! As a matter of fact, there more of us brainwashed out there than there are gays. If we can get our act together and expose the homosexual lifestyle for what it really is, the gap will continue to widen.
