`For Lease' sign goes up at Marie's

Full story: Daily Breeze 20
With a "For Lease" sign now in front of the Marie Callender's restaurant at Western Avenue and Trudie Drive, it looks like the eatery's possible move into downtown San Pedro could be getting closer. Full Story

Has anyone eaten at this Marie Callender's? The food is terrible, perhaps only a notch higher than the awful stuff serverd at Carrow's and Coco's down the street. I think the owner's are on the right track by leaving the location in RPV. Just do San Pedro a favor and don't reopen. With all due respect to Mr Papadakis, he must be really tired and lost his sense of taste. This Marie Callendar's is a "full slice of America" that San Pedro does not need in its diet. There has to be something better than this. Is this the type of restaurant that would carry on the tradition that Papadakis brought to San Pedro for so many years? Don't sell out. Take the time to ensure that your culinary legacy lives on.

They would do really well down there if they stay open late enough for the Longshoreman 10pm lunch traffic.

The Marie's on Western has terrible food. It can close shop and stay closed. As noted above there's a Coco's and a Carrow's down the street from it. I challenge anyone to identify the real difference between any of those restaurants.

And a "True Slice of America"? What a joke.

Too bad Papadakis is leaving, but I don't think Marie Callender is a good replacement for that spot. I also noticed with all the tall building in the area, there are not a lot of people eating in the area.

I think San Pedro should try to get rid of crappy housing project that is near by so the low lives can go back to South Central. Than, maybe than will there be people going to San Pedro at night time.

Longshoreman can go on a diet without Marie Callendar, have you ever seen them? With their belly sticking out?

I'm still chuckling over JBT's comment. As much as I would love the "boys" to take over, it doesn't seem likely. And SP will be stuck with Marie's moving in. Don't get me wrong. Marie's might be a good option, but not THAT Marie's. When it was first announced that the Papadakis' were thinking of closing shop and the taverna opening as Marie's, the message board was loaded with notes from the public about how awful the food is at the above mentioned Marie's. Not only that, but the ambiance was nill and the staff beyond "poor". I don't know anyone who likes that place nor goes there. Any other ideas?

A good sports bar or even a Chili's would be a nice change for Pedro

Blame Taso and Petros, for not taking over the family business. They rather be a wannabe-actor and sports clown, respectively.

People like you are the reason why prejudice will always exist. Why do you think all lowlifes are from south central? I can name at least one that lives in Torrance.

This is a sad day for the redevelopment of down town San Pedro. To bring such a generic and terrible restaurant into an area that is trying to become something new and original is a bad move. I think Papadakis is a sell out. The first anyone heard of him closing down the restaurant there was already talk of Marie Calanders moving in. So who's idea is it really, or is the money that is being offered for the sight making the decision for Papadakis. He was one of the originals in trying to change downtown San Pedro and now he is one of the one's trying to ruin it by letting Marie Calanders move in. His restaurant brought people from out of town into San Pedro, now Marie's will help keep people away. I say "stay away Marie Calander" the are a lot better restaurants than you and we would like any one of them instead.

Marie Callendar in that spot will fail. I give it two years max. It will then stand empty for awhile and eventually something else will come along.

They should just open a Taco Bell or Del Taco to cater towards the demographics of san pedro.

Can't they find anyone who loves Papadakis and is willing to learn to cook the same dishes? It would be a shame to lose such a fine restaurant and have it replaced by Marie Callendar's. I'd rather see a Daphne's there. At least it would be Greek even if was a far cry from Papadakis. Come on somebody, step up to the plate!

Maybe they want to do something else with their lives! They're both good at whatever they do. One of them is an amazing photographer.
Why call them disrespectful names?
