I hope to stimulate some conversation that doesn’t hinge solely upon RC problems. This list is by no means complete. It was just what came to my addled mind as I sat here trying to find a peaceful place among some of the bitter topix threads. Take it or leave it, but if you have any favorites, I would love to read about them.
NOTE: Some will fault me for promoting any author or book besides God / Holy Bible (Heath). I’m doing literature here, not religion. I included C.S.“Jack” Lewis, but also an atheist who did okay – Samuel (Mark Twain) Clemens. Fair and Balanced, just like FOX. MY FAVORITE AUTHORS LIST: Cormac McCarthy remains nearly untouchable in quality writing. He is extremely interesting and highly entertaining. Skip the movies, read the books. He covers a lot of ground, but primarily the border country between Texas and Mexico. His imagery leaves me wishing I could do that. James Lee Burke is almost as good as McCarthy. He does small town, but it’s from a viewpoint of the challenged (recovering alcoholism) law enforcement and family – set in bayou country, New Iberia Parish, Louisiana. Sam Clemens was my first, best influence in writing style. I will always love and re-read his books. Joel Chandler Harris and his Uncle Remus stories, as first read to me by my older brother in dialect, still bubbles up in my heart. I can do nearly all the lines from the Disney, Song of the South version because we kids played the old 78 rpm until it was “wore out”. David Baldacci churns out NY Times bestsellers with astonishing regularity. Mighty entertaining. James Herriot is another who needs no endorsement. C.S. Lewis could have run rings around Heath, not that he would have bothered. LEGAL GENRE---------- Scott Turow remains my favorite. It’s just a preference in style. Robert K Tanenbaum’s Butch Karp is a courtroom master. John Grisham needs no endorsement from me. Steve Martini is right up there with the best. Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) stands apart in quality and humanity. |

Wow DPD, that's pretty impressive!!! I'm a book lover too, but I don't usually read such a wide array. But one of the best books I've read lately would be "Night" by Elie Weisel. It's a quick read being only 120 pages, but it sure pulls you into the story!
I'm a book lover and have read many books over the years. I love the classics, "The Catcher In The Rye", "The Great Gatsby", etc., but I'm a huge fan of Edgar Allen Poe! I absolutely love his work and I'm incredibly fascinated by his twisted imagination! I also love, "The Four Agreements", by Don Miguel Ruiz, by the way his book, "The Fifth Agreement" is due out in January. "The Secret" has been an impressive read but I've not finished it yet. I've become a big fan of other books that are on a more "spiritual" level, but I won't mention them here lest I become a target of Heath ... again! I would have to say though, that my favorite books are those based on historical fact, and fictional stories that lead you in one direction, but drop you off elsewhere leaving you with your jaw dragging the floor! So, this subject begs the question... have you done any writing? You seem to have a better understanding of proper english than most I've met lately (seriously not meaning to offend anyone). |

The book "Night" seems to be popular reading this school teachers. My son will be on his third read this year and my daughter has read it twice.

Thanks, LMH. I'll check our Don Miguel Ruiz when I'm done with the current books I'm reading. It takes a lot longer than it used to due to more irons in the fire.
Dr Suess, although offered in jest most likely, was not a bad suggestion, rcbob. My kids were raised with a lot of Cat in the Hat, and Green Eggs and Ham, etc. One of my sons is named Sam, so the green eggs thing was an every night read for him. I still remember most of those books vividly, and my kids love to remind me of those, and the countless other stories I told or read to them.. Now it's grandkids and a great nephew. So Dr. Suess is okay with me. Heath, thanks for your contribution. As I said in my introduction to this discussion, this is not the religion thread. You have plenty of other discussions going on. If you have ever read any novels, non-biblical historical literature or biographies, you are welcome to comment or offer suggestions. Otherwise, I have already stipulated what this particular thread is about. If you aren't getting enough traffic on your other threads, you could start a new one..."Bibles I Have Read". "Styles in Biblical Prose". How about, "My Bible is Bigger Than Your Bible!" That should be popular. I am trying to be gentle about this, Heath. I don't mean to rock your ark, but please respect the stated subject of the thread, if you can. If you just can't resist, then I will try to understand and be patient, but I won't necessarily respond to off-subject comments, and I will ask the other contributors to do likewise. Thanks! |

Husker, I have read some Ed McBain 87th Precinct novels, but never really got a chance to dig very deeply into that very talented author's books. I am haunted by the Alfred Hitchcock screenplay he wrote, "Birds". Whenever I see the starlings swirling up above the fields surrounding Royse City, I think of that movie. It leaves me just slightly anxious, so powerful was that movie.
I have not tried "Night", but I am finding (from sneaking a few pages out of my son's assigned reading) that some of the book list being used is pretty good stuff. By the way, I loved reading the first crime fiction novel - Wilkie Collins, MOONSTONE. I also read ALL the crime fiction of Dorothy Sayers and Georgette Heyer, but don't tell anyone. I won't admit to reading "girlie" crime fiction! |

Of course not. Those snide remarks were entirely appropriate. Therefore... www.roysecitycoc.org |

DPD, obviously Heath has need to subject us to his ignorant rants on every thread possible. I was hoping he'd leave this one alone. I appreciate the thread, even though people aren't respecting what your intent was.
Another really good book was Treblinka. It is very well written and a good account of the Holocaust. |

"ignorant rants" And of course your posts are sooooooooo brilliant. lol On any thread I open all are welcome to come and rant to their hearts content. www.roysecitycoc.org |

Never said my posts were brilliant. But, again, I am not a minister degrading his neighbors and professing to know more than anyone else. Judgment, you seem to forget, isn't yours to make. I simply find you annoying. What I telling DPD is that it is sad we can't escape your tedious, nauseating lectures on any threads, obviously. And for that, I am sorry. It would be nice to continue reading topix, but since it's becoming the Heath show, completely devoid of any logic or intelligence, I'd rather not. Sad for me because I truly enjoy DPD's posts. DPD - I will miss reading your information - truly. You write so well, it brings humor and intelligence to his site. Good luck dealing with he-who-must-not-be-named - with all his immense power and knowledge - he might have a direct line to God in his house, so be careful.

Loving, I'm truly sorry that I was unable to provide a safe haven here for the stated discussion. It goes beyond rudeness...he's demonstrating a severe personality disorder. I used to think he was doing some good, but now I see what he is really up to. I think that we could safely ignore his commentary and go on without acknowledging him in any slightest way. His antics will increase - he is not able to control himself. Eventually, I believe we can get the attention of the moderators to ban him from threads where his posts are a menace to others. We will see. |

DPD - my husband said you're right. I should ignore him entirely for the insignificant person he is and enjoy the threads that I find interesting, such as yours. I also read "Night" and it was wonderful.
"Conduct under Fire" is a good read, but one of my favorites is "In Harms Way" which is the survivor-account of the sinking of the Indianapolis. Very, very moving. |
||||
Wipe the drool off your chin and get your feet off the furniture. I ask you to go to your own threads, rant and entertain yourself. If you can't mind your manners, you are no longer welcome on mine. |
||||
I will post where I choose just like you're welcome to post on any thread I open. www.roysecitycoc.org |

"Judgment, you seem to forget, isn't yours to make." And yet you make plenty about me. hhhhmmmmmm John 7:24 www.roysecitycoc.org |

DPD - James Lee Burke? What is one of your favorites from Mr. Burke? I am interested in the fact he's from New Iberia Parish in LA. My family is cajun, from Laurelville and New Iberia. Thanks!!
