Mass euthanasia: Shelter told to ‘wipe slate clean’
By KATE COIL Bluefield Daily Telegraph
PRINCETON — Local animal activists are angered at a Mercer County Commission decision to euthanize numerous animals at the Mercer County Animal Shelter without community notice or input.
Cheryl Young was one of several local volunteers and animal lovers who helped transport more than 100 animals out of the shelter last weekend to in- and out-of-state rescue groups to prevent them from being put down. Young said the county commission directed the Mercer County Animal Shelter to put down animals on Friday following a surprise visit to the shelter the day before.
“The county commission made a surprise visit to the shelter last week following a complaint to see the overcrowding and they told the shelter to basically wipe the slate clean and start over,” Young said.“They told them to eliminate any animal that had been in the shelter for longer than 10 days, regardless of the animal’s situation. We managed to save 165, but I was told the amount of animals they had to euthanize over the weekend was just astronomical.”

Young said the commission made the decision to have the animals at the shelter euthanized after they toured the facility, giving shelter employees and local volunteers no time to find alternative housing for the animals.
“It was on extremely short notice,” Young said.“We had to get the animals out. I’m not aware if they announced a public hearing or sought any public feedback on this, which bothers me. This caught the humane society, veterinarians, volunteers and animal lovers off guard the way they implemented this.”
Young and other volunteers helped transport 118 animals to rescue organizations in Pennsylvania over the weekend, and found placement for other animals locally. Young said the shelter had become crowded since there were no staff members available to perform euthanasia during the summer months.
“Our local shelter was really lenient on this because the current director’s goal is to rescue and adopt out animals, not just to euthanize them,” Young said.“They were unable to euthanize any animals this summer because of personnel issues. They were working to adopt these animals out to rescue organizations.”
Young believes the county commission should have looked for an alternative way to handle the situation, which has now left the halls of the Mercer County Animal Shelter eerily quiet.“I don’t know the county commission’s side, and we aren’t trying to slam them, but I don’t think they went about this in the proper way,” Young said.“They didn’t seek any help from the public. They did it on a Friday when people were caught off guard, and it’s hard to get a hold of people on the weekends. I don’t think they realize that euthanizing these animals is a really hard job. The shelter is really somber and empty right now. It’s quite eerie when you walk through. You don’t hear any animals barking or anything.”
However, County Commissioner Mike Vinciguerra said it has always been the policy of the shelter to euthanize animals after 10 days at the shelter.

“We’ve had an order in place for over a year now,” he said.“Used to, it was only seven days, but now it’s 10. They can keep animals for 10 days, but on the 11th day, they must be put down. They can relocate the animals to other groups or adopt them out during that 10-day time period. We aren’t set up to keep that many animals. We told them to start euthanizing the animals a long time ago. This isn’t new to the shelter.”
Vinciguerra said the commission’s visit to the shelter was prompted following citizen complaints.
“We had several phone calls about there being too many animals at the shelter and how dirty it was, so we decided to visit,” Vinciguerra said.“We were very disappointed in the shelter. It was really nasty and real dirty. We had reports of animals with mites and being covered in feces and urine and getting very sick. There were over 100 cats there alone and prior to our visit, there were more than 350 animals there. They had 60 animals dropped off on the day we visited alone.”
According to Vinciguerra, there are several reasons the animal population at the shelter increased rapidly.
People were just tired of taking care of their animals, I guess,” he said.“They move out of the area and just leave them here. We also had a staff member who left and that was the person responsible for ordering the medicine that they use to euthanize the animals. We had to wait for another staff member to come back from vacation before we could resume euthanizations.”
Vinciguerra said the commission did not meet with the public before asking the shelter to enforce the county’s euthanasia regulations.

“Two county commissioners — Jay Mills and myself — toured the shelter and made the decision to enforce the regulations,” Vinciguerra said.“There was no commission meeting. We just talked about it together. We didn’t take a vote or have a meeting.”
Vinciguerra said he did not know how many animals were euthanized after the county regulation was enforced.
Lisa Nisbit, director of the Mercer County Animal Shelter, said the shelter currently has 35 dogs and between 50 and 60 cats following the enforcement of the euthanasia regulation.
“They implemented the regulation that we have to eliminate any animals after 11 days if they have not been fostered or adopted,” Nisbit said.“I don’t believe I can release the number of animals that were euthanized. It was a policy already, but it wasn’t really in effect. The county commission put it into effect immediately on Friday.”
Nisbit said there has been an increase in the number of animals being brought to the shelter.
“We’ve had quite an influx of animals,” Nisbit said.“We’ve seen a lot more coming in. People aren’t spaying and neutering. A lot of animals have also come in here from out of county, like after what happened in McDowell County. We do our best to take care of every animal here.”

I had recently went up to the shelter to get a kitten. She died exactly a week later due to parvo. The doctor's bill was more than I paid for her at the shelter. If the mass euthinasia was for the sick animals that is sad, but understanable. There was not enough room to even clean the cages from past residence. I love animals and hate to see them being up there. The local animal shelter really needs cleaned up, but in a totally different way.

I was at the animal shelties the day before this order to do the euthanizations. The cats were sneezing and coughing. The dogs were overcrowded and climbing over top of each other just to have a spot to lay down that was not covered in feces. Several of the cats and kittens had their eyes matted shut. One cat even had a large gaping wound on it's ear that was seeping fluids. They were not being appropriately cared for. I had to put down the cat and kittens I was caring for because they were dying every couple of hours. I and my children watched two of the little ones suffer gasping for air while waiting for the vet to euthanize them. What happened with these animals is horrible, but it could have been prevented. The rules and policies are in place for the safety and well being of all the animals to prevent this type of thing from happening. The decision the commissioners made was a difficult one, but based on the horrid conditions these animals were living in and as sick as they were it was was necessary. I don't like seeing animals have to be put down, but I would follow the rules so this kind of thing doesn't have to happen again. God bless the animals that suffered the inhumane treatment they received. The staff at the shelter watched as cats were laying in their own feces and urine as they sat looking through a jewelry magazine while I was there. There was a cage at the front of the shelter right by the front desk that had a rabbit sitting in it's own feces with no food or water inn the cage. One cat was in an animal carrier in the hallway and was crying out for someone to pay attention to the fact that it had nowhere to lay down because the litter box covered 80% of it's cage and the other 20%was covered by the empty water dish. Staff was sitting behind the desk on the computer instead of helping these poor animals. I took pictures of the facility and I will be attending the county commission meeting October 11. Though this was horrible, people must understand that their quality of death superseded their quality of life.

Why didn't you offer your assistance to the shelter and the animals? If you love animals this is what you should have done. I don't believe you are an animal lover as you say. If all you could do was complain then you didn't have very much to do. I hope you are at the meeting. You can have a bitch session to the real animal lovers faces. You don't need to adopt animals. Animal lovers don't report, they offer help. Have you ever heard of fostering animals.? I hope the shelter never allows you to adopt again and I will make sure all the other shelters know this.

You could have purchased a kitten from a pet shop and it has the risk of developing parvo. You have no guarantee any animal won't get it. Its viral. Sometimes vaccines don't prevent it if its been exposed prior. Don't go back to the shelter, they don't need adopters like you who complain and whine.

The only thing the new rules the county commission has set is only going to cause people to start dropping animals on the roads. What have they solved? I hope they are happy with them selves. The lady who bitched about the shelter , I hope you are at the meeting. You will get to meet real animal lovers. You should have offered your help to the shelter staff and the animals. Instead you ran and reported it . What grade are you in? I bet you were the teachers pet for reporting everyone else.

Gee idk guess taken them to the vet, getting them meds, and staying up 24/7 for two days to force feed them, holding them and loving them isn't enough for you. Just for your info, you better check your records, the mama cat was vet checked before going in the shelter. You're an idiot. I know she was not pregnant. AND she was a stray dropped off on my door that was pregnant when she showed up. I got her a medical exam and helped deliver those kittens. I offered my service to the shelter. I offered the services of all of my family and my church group. They turned it away... I will speak the truth of what I saw that day, and the pictures I have will prove it. I will not slander anyone, but I will tell the truth. IF you are the one that has the other kitten, funny I was told by shelter staff that he had to be put down also. Maybe you better check what you are talking bout before running your mouth. The county commissioners and myself had to make the hardest decision of our lives, but sometimes the decisions are necessary. If you are the one who had the other kitten, why did you do nothing for the other kittens that were laying there dying as you reached your arm into that cage pushing aside the emaciated kittens so you could get the one you wanted. Why didn't you feed them, clean them and care for them the way you so proudly say you were doing? Why was the momma cat dried up and bleeding from her breasts yet you did not lift a finger to help her? WHY??????

And another funny thing is that if you were there that day like you said you were, why did they have to call you from the shelter and contact your boyfriend to tell you to call them back? You weren't there!!!! Looking ignorant isn't going to help your cause any. The staff at shelter may have been trying to do their best, but if that is what there best is, I fear to see their worst. The pictures I have will show them what they were looking past on that day. These animals did not get this way over night! You say you are an "animal lover," why did you not love all the animals there to take better care of them?? Some people can talk a big game, at least I was able to back up what I am saying, with the medical bills to prove it. Where's the shelters medical bills? Where is the outrage that should have been coming from all of the so called ANIMAL LOVERS when these animals were being abused by you? I pray you take better care of your animals than you did in the shelter. God knows anyone that permitted the things to go on the day I was there and at least the 9 days before I was there, should not be able to own animals.

So go ahead, run you mouth. Show everyone that you were one of the people to blame for this mess. Had the rules and regulations been followed to begin with, these animals would not have been laying in their own urine and feces and have to be soaked in warm water to break up the feces to get it off. They wouldn't have been emaciated to the point of needing IV fluids from a vet. Oh yeah, wait a minute, that's right, there was no vet on staff...does staff remember telling me that or have they conveniently forgotten like they forgot how to care for the helpless animals? Or are you going to lie to the next person who brings in perfectly healthy animals and tell them "don't worry they are so cute, they will be gone in 3 days" like was told to us? Was it fair? NO! Neither is very many other things in the cruel and unjust world we live in. Reality check lady, LIFE IS NOT FAIR!!!!!!

The animal shelter should be allowed to keep the animals at capacity until they are adopted or there is no space and then the older pets will be put to death. I think the community should be funding more free spay/neuter events so there will be less strays and unwanted pets running around.

i think they all need killed. the rampant overpopulation of dogs on the loose in he area is out of control. there are so many dogs running loose it's staggering. if they killed all the animals at the shelter it would fill again in notime. get rid of them lets cleen up the streets.

I wish we could take our HEALTHY ANIMALS WE GOT FROM THE SHELTER to the meeting.. I can't wait to see this bitch. I just might have to go to jail for a few nights over this one. crazy bitch! I don't give a shit what you say you're a piece of shit! you don't love animals or you woulve seen the shelter struggling and jumped in and helped them! and I know they wouldn't turn any volunteers down, especiallly at a time like that. you're a real piece of work, still having to try to convince ppl you made the right choice. BULL SHIT. AND I AGREE WITH BLACK MAN, why don't they start funding some spay and neuter projects?!?! nip the problem before it even starts. laws need to be changed. ppl need to have permits just to have pets. and permits to breed and limits. I would love to get my hands on you lady. and I'm SURE sooo many other people just like me would.

What is the price to euthanize. If it is compareble why not spay and neuter. Have some free spay/neuter clinics like Raliegh Co.
