It also says in the paperwork that these people sign that they could meet with a financial planner to guide them. I am not understanding that if your current mortgage is paid off and you own nothing on the home that extreme makeover gifted to them -- except increase utility bills.. Why do they lose the home. If I had no mortgage and paid just utilities on a 4000 sq foot home they would run 1000 month plus food which would be great.

Free anything is rarely a blessing. If you work for it, it has value
and you respect it and usually tend to be more responcible. If its given to you it has no value therefore it is easy to gamble with it. The only money that ever helped me and my struggling family came from the sweet of my brow.Give em fish, cripple them and their children for life by teaching dependancy. Don't give them a pole but teach them how to make one and you will endow them and their children with the most valuable gift you can give your children, The ability to be SELF SUFFICENT. Free stuff is poison. You gotta give more than you take or you'll always want more, never have enough, and never be satisfied. Eternally thirsty.

I think it is sad to think that in one moment of happiness they lost a home thinking they gain a new one only to be hit in the face with all the little red tape bills later . If it was up front and in writing then we can't blame no one then themselves for if they knew about the rules and the bills to come and did it then same on them for taking something they knew they couldn't afford but if it wasn't known to them they hey lets get behind them and help a fellow family out and say keep your house and let Hollywood and the big boys we helped out help us out and give those a house that need a home to survive and who gave all they have to give to make love work in America that my view of it.

Out of all the homes that the show has built in the six season, the show has been on, only a handful of them are losing their homes. It seems that the other families are doing fine with paying for their homes and the expenses. Sometimes there are people that are not good with money, or have good common sence.

Like what? Buy a tent? Get a second job? File bankruptcy and burden responsible people with your debt?

They should build 5 $100,000 houses and help 5 families instead of one. They help people who don't have any money, and then build them a huge house. They probably can't even pay the first electric bill.

There's a reason why these homes needed to be made over in the first place... Their owners are terrible with money management. Who gets the gift of a luxury home and their bills paid and then immediately takes out a 450,000 dollar equity line? The cost of living is not that high when a house is given to you, regardless of prior mortgage issues they were put in a great position to rebound and chose not to.

5 out of 140 is not bad in a 6 year period. There have been communities which have been wiped out of original owners due to forclosure. Better finaicial decision making is needed

How about the fact that (if you read) some of these people remortgaged their "homes" at the appraised value knowing they were unable to make the payments. Now whose fault is that.....

I think that some of these families think that just b/c they are getting a new home that their bills will change. They're only fixing the houses, not your financial problems. If you can not afford the house don't submit your name to the show.

they are not the only ones to put their homes on the market. Extreme Makeover did a house for the Tutweliers in Chapman K.S after the june 11 tornado and they already have their home up for sell.

The fundamental issue is not that they can't afford the home. Financially any of these families CAN afford the taxes (max $5,000yr), utilities (max $3,600yr), etc...
99% of the time the "Extreme" home's mortgage is paid off, alleviating the financial burden. Not to mention the college funds that are set up for the children and vehicles that are given to the families, etc...
The issue with the "VERY FEW" families that are losing their gifted homes to foreclosure is that these are uneducated, non-contributing members of society that squander the gifts they've been given. This is the same behavior that put them in hardship to begin with and will continue to put them in this position.
Don't forget, all these people ASK for this assistance in an application video they submit. Only when they repeat the same idiotic behavior that put them in this position in the first place do they blame the people who gave them an opportunity to make their lives better.
It's not the gifts that cause the idiocy it's the idiots they are given to.
i could not have said it better myself!!!!

I agree that the Extreme Home Makeover folks should not build these families such elaborate homes. Some of these homes are just too expensive to maintain for the persons who receive them.
Also, I think that the show should revisit some of their former projects to see just how well these families have maintained their homes. I suspect there would be some real surprises in store - and not all for the good!

I couldn't agree with you more wbt out of Dallas, TX. Very ungrateful people in America. First of all the people who are given these homes are provided with money to cover the taxes, so there is no excuse. They choose to do as they please with the money instead of doing the right thing. If I was granted a new home including taxes, I would be doing everything in my power to keep it instead of complaining about the small things.

Wow,

I am disheartened by many of the comments. Heaven forbid any of us find ourselves in situations that cause us to have to humble ourselves and ask for help. Many of the families on this show did not ask for their childrent be gravely ill and live in and out of the hospital...they didn't ask to loose loved ones to such tragic events...and God knows they didn't ask to not have the means to support their own families. While the homes may be extravagent and lavish, the show is called Extreme Home Makeover and no one is forced to watch it. It's not like they stop all programming to air this show. While ABC may fall short on educating the new home owners, they are offering an opportunity of a lifetime. They also give out scholarships and so on. My opinion is that if you're so bent on complaining, then be the change that's needed and offer yourself and/or services as a solution. It's sad to see people loose their homes it really is, but we don't know the reason behind every story.
