I advise you not move there. There are few jobs and the school system is horrible. Politics are corrupt and drug use widespread.
But the people are great and the hills are beautiful.
Yes, it can get very cold in the winter and the roads can be dangerous.
There are lots of good small towns but E.Ky is always depressed.
I suggest Berea, Richmond, Winchester, Georgetown or Danville. Lexington is a great place if it's not too big for you. So's Louisville, but it's definitely not a small town.

good advise,, prestonsburg ky is run by 1 mayor,6 bumbling council members, and the attorney general..no one here knows anything about the law nor do they care.from voluntary annexation which does not exist, according to trey graysons office, ky land office in frankfort. so if you move here ,you give up all your rights... its only a matter of time until the name is changed from prestonsburg to fanninsburg....

I could not agree more. I am not from Prestonsburg but I DO know about the law there. And I can promise that they are not doing their jobs, nor do they know how to do them. Not to mention, the politics and the prosecution of CRIMINALS is ridiculous! More corrupt than anywhere in E. KY if you ask me.

Floyd county is one of the most God forsaken places in the world. People should have to have a passport and bloodwork before they leave. Ask me how I know. I lived there for a while and it was horrible. Want drugs? Stop anywhere. Want work? Forget it. I have nothing against welfare but it wasn't inteded for Floyd County alone. If you just moved there, welcome to the Food Stamp capital of the World.

Thank you for any info Hey, Its not as bad here as some of these Foreigners are leading you to believe.......I'd say most of them are Yankees anyway. Weather is tolerable...Kind of humid though in the summers....winters are mostly mild however Jan-Feb are colder than 30 degrees. Neighboring county of Johnson has the finest school system east of Lexington.Just look up the test scores.....5th best "county" school systm in the state and 11th overall including the independents who only cater to the well to do class. I work (teach) for the Johnson County system and live in Floyd County just outside P-burg. People here are leary of outsiders simply because of the kind of comments you have been receiving...we don't trust foreigners especially people North of the Ohio River..but after we get to know and trust you it's a different story.......

It is a different area. If you are not accustomed to being bored out of your mind.....this may not be for for. There are only jobs for people who have connections and they also have a price. As far as teh education goes, I am afraid they are correct we need help. But if you play basketball the locals will praise you to be almost "GODLIKE". I would seriously think over your decision to move into any area of Kentucky that lies in the eastern or southern sections; your kids will probably learn more about drugs than city kids. OURS have!!! We moved "HOME" after 22 years out near Chicago, and our kids now are exposed to so much more than they ever were there.

I have to disagree with you. have you seen the town lately? We have the best histyoric downtown in Eastern Kentucky. The whole downtown is completely wireless for free! They just built 12 new sportsfields and 224 stalls at a new horse center. They have great traditions such as the West Prestonsburg Bridge and Archer Park. Want development? There are 5 new businesses coming this month and the commercial district has 7 NEW ACRES coming because they are moving a mountain to acccomplish this. You want a great school system? then just go to the town 10 minutes away. They have the #2 school ranking in the state and have won 5 of the last 7 academic state bowls. And I came here from Chicago to live here!!!!!!! Paintsville, Pikeville, and Prestonsburg are growing everyday and I am proud to live here.

That all sounds great Brent.
I read that even Town Branch Rd is going to get sewer soon. And they replaced the old bridge a couple years ago. I was scared of that old bridge for years!

I live here, and the best advice I can give you is to run FAR AWAY! The school system is horrible....my daughter said at the high school level someone was taken out on a stretcher or handcuffs almost daily! Even my grade school level kids have been exposed to drugs! We are in the process of finding a new place to call home, and it won't be in Floyd County!

My advice to all you that say Eastern Kentucky is a bad place to live because of no jobs is GET AN EDUCATION. Then you can get a good job anywhere in Eastern Kentucky, even prestonsburgh, yes i lived there a while and in paintsville for years. loved it. As for drugs, go anywhere in the world and it's the same. School system, kids will be kids and maybe if their parents were better influences and helped them with their homework they would excell in any school district. As the old saying goes "when your neighbor moves away because of jobs and negatives about his community, the guy moving into his house next left his home somewhere else in the country for the same reason!" Figure that one out. And the politicians aren't corrupt there, they are human. Are you perfect? I don't think so.

I have to disagree with the person who said that "people are being led away in handcuffs or stretchers on a daily basis". That account is VERY inaccurate and VERY inflamatory. I have a police scanner and I work with the police here in Prestonsburg and I can can tell you that this is not true. In about the 2 1/2 years since I've been here, I think I can think of 3 or four incidents like that ... and those were for kids fighting or causing vandalism. Please do not make statements like that.
And yes, i agree with the previous person ... GET AN EDUCATION and stop waiting for a handout. Make your own opportunities!!!!

Well I'm no "foreigner". i grew up in the area and return as often as I can,%70 of my family still live there. Like a lot of remote areas, the legal and political system IS very very corrupt. Education system is extremely poor and unemployment rate is among highest in the nation. Although the problems I have mentioned are very troubling they are not the worst the area has. Kentucky is only the 26th most populated state in the country BUT has the 4th largest mortality rate of cancer in the nation. Cervical cancer death rates in Eastern Kentucky are almost twice as high as the national average. Eastern Kentucky leads the state in deaths when it comes to liver, lung, and pancreatic cancers. Lung cancer appears to be diagnosed at higher frequency among younger age groups in Eastern Kentucky compared to the national average. Breast cancer is the most. common cancer among Eastern Kentucky women. A large cluster of high outlier counties occur in the Central Appalachian region and represent the largest high rate cluster in the U.S. People from home tend to get educations and leave or they get no furthered educations and they stay. We need some of those scholars who have left us to return and take back the county from "the good ol boys". These people are being oppressed by their local government as well as by disease.

There is a police scanner next to my desk and I can tell you that that does not happen. I think I have heard of three cases in two years there. I doubt if any of them turned out to be felonies. More likely, they were fistfights and the police are called as a precaution as well as the firefighters. Again, that is not true ... I can tell you from experience
