I heard about the chicken drop that Ridgeland is planning for pioneer days. Let me tell you, my grandfather had animals for food his whole life. He never disrespected them or abused them. He was very respectful of their lives. It is because of him that I am vegan. Chicken drops are just part of the horrors that chickens live through. Please don't add more misery to an already miserable existence. Sincerely, Faye Ferrall Monterey, California

The chickens do not go through any "abuse" or "disrespect" during pioneer days. Maybe you should do some homework and figure out what type of animal cruelty ACTUALLY does occur in Ridegland.

i think that throwing chickens and letting them fly to people who want them is just fine! chickens dont get to fly much so this is their chance to get some air. and the kids who get them thake very good care for them. so you people should just leave pioneer days alone and let them have fun!

I have been going for the past 6 years with my children, This year I brought my boss and her family and their daughter caught the pig that yes, they chased. And now "WIlBUR" has a new friend and family. People really should mind their own business and let us mind ours if you don't like it don't go!!!!

Please wait...
I love how someone in California, who has likely never even seen the event, is criticizing it. The "chicken drop" is not a drop at all. They do have wings, you know. Oh wait, I'm guessing the only chickens you've ever seen up close are the ones marked "Gold'N Plump."
Now if you've ever been to the Jennie-O Turkey Store and seen the semis filled with turkeys--THAT might be considered animal cruelty. But hey, they taste good, don't they?

I live about six miles south of Rigdeland and have seen the chickens that get away hanging out in town. They feed from the sunflowers folks put out for the birds and other stuff.
Of the 120 or so chickes sent off, something like ten of them make it to freedom. Much better odds than the chickens on Faye's grandfather's farm.

Considering the caliber of posts already here on this page, and the lateness of things, I'm sure I'll get flamed pretty hard for this post, if anyone cares about it at all. But, I don't care.
For the record, Faye worked tirelessly to provide better lives for animals, including, and possibly especially, chickens. In fact, Faye had five chickens of her own, as companions instead of food, who got to live out their lives as intended. Therefore, CHELSEAFAN, it is likely that she had a greater knowledge of the vastness of these animals than you. Don't be so quick to judge.

I have gone to this event several times now. The chickens are not actually "dropped". They are "lofted" from a very low, flat roof & I have never seen one get hurt. EVER! There were 2 women that had 4 of these birds just last year) who were proudly announcing that they would be family pets. The people that donate the chickens care for the animals they raise (I know them) & would not do this if they thought their birds would be harmed. Thanks for your concern but it isn't necessary. It is a wonderful day of fun & social active for family & friends. If you've never been there, you really can't judge it.

I grew up in Ridgeland and first of all the chickens ARE dropped from a low roof which is perfectly safe. the chickens arent harmed at all... chickens do have wings. They cant fly long distances but they can glide and keep themselves in the air for short distances so they were definitely not hurt during the chicken drop. as proof of their flying abilities i recall one flying through the bank window in town several years ago. And I also have to wonder why someone in California is commenting on the chicken drop in Wi. You must be ignorant if you attacking a fun, tradition that doesnt harm chickens when you could be trying to stop the REAL cruelty that happens to chickens at mass chicken farms and the like. either way... they taste good. Second whitney you must not know who you are talking to because you just commented that CHELSEAGAN may have more knowledge than others who posted on this page... Half of rural wisconsinites are farmers and have had chickens sometime in their life or know people with chickens so I highly doubt CHELSE has a better knowledge. not to mention the fat that she kept them as companions. chicken arent companions. if you want to be humane to them she should have kept them on a large reserve or something. the way you talk about it, it sounds like she keeps them in her house....not exactly what I would call animal friendly.

Chickens are just as much animals as cats and dogs. Just because our culture calls them "food" (did you know dogs and cats are "food" and not "companions" (until more recently) in other cultures? Grow up and out of your very limited view of an animal as a companion. Read about how chickens have empathy (yes, look it up) and they protect their young and build friendships. They can very easily be pets/companions. I have experienced it myself. I have had chickens live in my yard, knock on my front door for treats, and sleep inside when it was too cold and a opposim sniffed them out. Having pet chickens is more animal-friendly than constantly regarding them as animal idiots labeled "food". I'm disappointed and disgusted at the ugliness in response to a non-confrontational comment. You all need to grow up.
