It is special treatment...how can you compare a commerical waterman with emergency vehicles. What make commerical waterman so special...why not allow truckers to ride witout plates.
I'm not comparing, it's an additional catagory ......and once again, it's not special treatment. They have restricted use. You have unrestricted use, generally speaking.
Backhoes, Fruit spraying vehicles, agricultural, livestock, farm, tractors, etc, etc......are restricted use and generally follow the same restrictions and registration guidelines.
Waterman make a choice whether or not to register their vehicle and most do because they wish to have unrestricted use of their vehicle.
If you get rid of these catagories, you'll see tractors, farm equipement, mining equipment, forklifts, snowmobiles and other special use vehicles on public roads. See how ridiculous this could be just because you are envious? How about registering lawnmowers, wheelchairs and grocery carts?

It appears that some of you can't think things all the way thru and are too caught up in being selfish for rime or reason.

I don't consider it special treatment. It is no different than farm, antique,
I don't remember saying I agree with the premise of farm or antique tags either but at least they pay for registration.

Their personal vehicles are held to the same standard.
So now they are in the same category as emergency vehicles? You're grasping, reach, reach, reach.....

Your not required to undergo random drug testing are you?
As a matter of fact I am. Thanks for asking.
RoTiNN wrote:

If the standard is accross the board, then you should support random drug testing, required of commercial drivers.

I support it 100%. In fact, I support drug testing as a pre-cursor as well as a requirement for continuance of any government provided service such as licensing, public assistance, employment, etc.
RoTiNN wrote:

Are you willing to have your license revoked for blowing 1/2 the BAC standard as commerical drivers are?
You bet I am. I don't give a da*n what, where, or how much you drive - if you're doing it drunk you should have your license revoked.

You could avoid any of the taxes by using public transportation or a taxi. No one is forcing you to own a vehicle.
I'm not trying to avoid taxes. I pay my fair share - and believe me it is a fair share. All I'm saying is that I would like everyone else to do the same.

There are no requirements that the vehicle be a car and if he had a pair of rubber boots or a rain jacket in the back that would qualify the driver as hauling equipment related to the industry.
That's a pretty weak arguement. Now I see why you can't grasp the concept of equal rights for everyone.

what you do is in your ballpark. your behavior belongs to you. you're the master. there are a million ways to respond to someone else's actions. for some reason, you've chosen the basest, cruelest method. you may be better than this. i wouldn't know. you would be the best judge of that, and it's truly none of my business, so i'll butt out.

so shopping on Jefferson Ave and Denbigh is part of this ... excerpt.

And what about inspection ??
If these vehicles are on the road with other vehicles .. they should be held accountable as is mine.

I apologize to the forum for my upsetness at yet one more slanted comment about my personal life. It nice to know there are still good people out there that can see what has been happening. I am very sorry.

No arguement, just stating facts...if you don't like it then go to Richmond and do something.

not everyone is equal and you demonstrate that, I can type till I'm blue in the face and it appears you still don't grasp what is fact.. what is reality and what is the law.

Save yourself the trip to Richmond, you've proven nothing here except your confusion and inability to comprehend, you'll embarass yourself and your family.

I've noticed that sometimes on these boards, people perceive facts as an attack unless they're facts that support their own position. It's difficult for them to be dispassionate. They jump before they think. Whatever the case, at least you don't have to sit down to dinner with them. Whew!

Good thing our founding fathers didn't have your attitude. We'd still be paying taxes to England.

Farm Vehicles, antique or 'special' vehicles all have plates issued by the DMV are registered. The VIN is recorded. From there they have to follow the guidelines with that particular plate.
Grabbing the flap off of a cardboard box and pulling a sharpie out of the glove box doesn't cut it!
These vehicles are not registered and shouldn't be on the road for any reason be it transporting a boot or a crab.
They should follow suit with ALL OTHER BUSINESS and be registered for the safety of all on the road.
Period.

I lived in Va. near the water for about a year up to 2 years ago in Surry & James counties. My car was still registered in Indiana since I was just temporarily at Ft. Eustis. I saw the Farm Use plates and got such a kick out of them that I put one on the front (Ind. & 17 other states has only 1 plate) and one on the back, next to my regular one (trick 2-plate bracket). I got plenty of looks and comments from the locals around Surry and Cobham Wharf like "That's the fanciest farm use car I ever seed".(It was a Subaru Outback) Later I found that the Watermen could do the same thing, as is discussed in the previous posts. I tried to find where I could get one of those plates too but struck out and was told that most of the ones in use were home made (as could be a farm use one; in fact, neither group needs any plate at all... they only use them as a "courtesy" or to keep from getting stopped SOME of the time).
If anyone reading this has taken a picture of a Waterman plate or knows anyone selling them, please comment here. Thanks

In many Mid west and western states you don't need liability insurance. I met a guy in Wisconsin who didn't have aa tag on his car for a year.

You have to understand the closer to Washington and some of those East Coast states are the most screwed up and regulated.

I think this exemption is left over from when licence plates were first required on vehicles. When the state announced that they were going to start requiring everyone to buy a licence plate for their vehicles the farmers and watermen raised hell and said "this will bankrupt us" The state figured these hayseeds and river rats all lived way out in the boonies where nobody else was going to be driving anyway and exempted them...and they haven been exempted ever since.

A farmer or waterman can buy a $60,000 Pickup truck and stick a Farm Use Tag on it and drive it pretty much anywhere. Some farmers put them on cars too. I was driving through Middleburg, VA once and saw a "farm use" tag on a Rolls Royce. LOL

Don't be jealous of people because they have something that you want! Yuck! You'll never be that awesome. Neither will anyone in your family or anyone you know. You suck and I bet you're unattractive and don't get chicks.

I wish I could send you a picture mr. Jealous geek,I bet you my boat for your prius that you would see just how special a waterman is. It would atleast help you to realize how ugly your wife is!
