Are you kidding me? If a white mayor had made that comment, the media would have sunk him....

I find it incredibly racist and irresponsible that the mayor should refer to any business in his city as for one race or another. I believe I heard Dr. King roll over in his grave when he heard Mayor Holley's comments. Dr. King fought long and hard to remove segregation and now it seems that Mayor Holley is encouraging segregation. What's next, Whites Only or Blacks Only signs in establishments? I hope the citizens/voters of Norfolk mount an effort to remove Mr. Holley from office so the citizens of Portsmouth do not have to deal with a mayor who makes such racist remarks.

We need another hotel in Portsmouth. I think what he really means that all the hotel in Portmsouth are White or Foreign owned. The proposed hotel will be blaxk invested and black owned. That's what Portsmouth needs. So all you people who is upset by his comments are reading too much into it. I hope they find more funding. I wouldn't mind investing myself.

mymiki - we're not making to much of his comment. It was said, by African American, and like the others said if he were Caucasian NAACP would be up on him. Why more hotels..? This is a business area not a resort.

It figures....Blacks want equal rights but with dumb ass comments that that, what do you expect people to think! If a white person would have said that, the NAACP would be arranging a law suit at this moment, but Blacks can always get by with it and that is equal....NOT, ONE SIDED as it has been for years!

FYI, this isn't the first time Mayor Holley has made unacceptable comments for a man in his position and yet, he was just recently re-elected. Mayor Holley makes it quite clear that his support sways depending on what perks are given. If you are surprised by his comments, you should attend more council meetings. His comments would have had a person of a different ethnic background publicly railroaded. Well, as an African-American, I want it perfectly clear, he doesn't speak for me!

I was born and raised in Portsmouth and supported Mayor Holley until the scandel years ago. Then when he was relected, not by me, I knew Portsmouth was in trouble.I am glad I no longer live in Portsmouth. I believe the people who still live there should have him thrown out Now, the comments he made on TV were uncalled for and he is now considered by me and others a Racist.

You got to be kidding me. Whats with all these officials trying to bring race into something that race has no place in. I am with the vice mayor on this one. There is no black or white hotels today. Why do they wanna segregate hotels. Thats just dumb and a bad business move in my opinion.

Obviously, Mayor Holley is a rascist. Possibly senile, but a rascist just the same. This is just another example of how the "minority" feels as though they have the right to insult european americans.

Mayor Holley speaks the truth. Most major businesses are owned by our European brothers and sisters. Blacks in America do not operate or own major businesses. The facts are real. The Renaissance Hotel downtown employee Blacks and Blacks do business there, however the owners are the Marriott. The last time I looked they were not Black. Great Job! Mayor Holley! You speak the truth!

That was an ignorant statement. That is why it is important to vote. He should have been voted out. This is not the first time he has made unnecessary statements.

So, is this what I'm hearing? Ms.Lucas and Mr. Holley want a place where black community groups can have their meetings and pay less than white community groups pay? And it's going to cost the citizens (all of 'em)$50 million? Please remember that there are white folks living in Portsmouth, too.

Mayor Holley's comments are his personal feelings towards the issue. It would seem to me that his personal comments have no place in a public forum. Serving on City Council encompasses making decisions on issues that will benefit EVERYONE and not just one race. In a time when race relations are strained, Mr. Holley's statements only serve to divide the races. If Mr. Holley was white and he made statements such as he did towards black people, every civil rights leader would come out of the woodwork.

Why would he say that in this day and age?

before you judge you need to know the background of the city and the slow progress it has made.the statement the mayor made, dug inside to the root of troubles in portsmouth.the heart of the economy needs to be supported by everyone no matter the color of their skin

The mentailty that "your people did it at one time, now it's our turn" and do so while expecting the playing field to be leveled is an oxymoron. There needs to stop being a double standard under the umbrella that "we own it so we can say it and you cannot". Stop throwing stones if you live in a glass house. Stop expecting something higher of others that you cannot deliver yourself.

How very sad for Portsmouth, while the rest of the country is trying eliminate racism - here you have a person of high influence encouraging it. It is just shamefull!
