Well did any of you see on the news what Walmart is going to be selling now? CASKETS of all things. Now that's getting quite ridiculous there. These so-calld SuperWalmarts are a joke. The older ones were much better than the new ones.

Very interesting. Walmart ruins another town. Portsmouth is on the brink of complete shutdown. We are currently living in a ramshackle ghost town that has hardly any chance of recovery. Walmart and drugs aren't the only problems in our town. Are you ready for a shocker? Another problem is Shawnee State. We no longer have 2nd street because of student housing. And you may say "but the college brings all the wonderful students here from Columbus and Dayton and Detroit and Cleveland...." Well people, where are all the drugs coming from in our community? Columbus, Dayton, Detroit, and Cleveland. Let's go back to the old Portsmouth, when you weren't afraid to let your children play in your yard, or your neighbor's for that matter.

my dad said back in the early eighties that eventually portsmouth would be a college-retirement community and he just missed the drug problem otherwise he was right, it seems tome that there is so much time put into those two things that the rest of us get the shaft, I still love my home though, I'm still here I refuse to give up and move away

True people Portsmouth right now doesn't look that appealing, but it's still not too late to make a come back. It can be done, but it has to be community effort.First all of the crooked city officials have to be rid of,the slum lords needs to be reported to the state board of health-not the local-,and the drug dealers with their dopehead friends. Now that seems like a big task ,which it is to a point. But if the new Mayor would demand a full investigation of the city by the Ohio Bureau of Investigation. You'd see how quickly things would change.I've seen it happen and these people don't mess around in any way.The town would get cleaned up and the crooked people cleaned out, plus they'd be held responsible for their actions and dealings they've done to put this town in it's condition.Hope they haven't spent all their money cause there would be some very hefty fines passed out for immediate payment, not at their convenience.Plus they would be held accountable for everything that they've done in the past years too.No stone would be left unturned and talk about some very nervous people.By the time the OBI got finished with them, they'd probably be talking to themselves.
As far as the college goes that was Vern Riffe's big idea, which has turned out to be a joke in many people's eyes.We were told that if it were brought in here that it would build up the town and help bring in more jobs, businesses, and industries here.We were told that the college would bring prosperity to our town.So where are they? Why hasn't anything changed for the good?Because we were scammed from the begining and lied to.True there were only a select few that made any good from it,but the rest of us were screwed over royally. They got the gold mine and the town got the shaft without a kiss on the cheek. But this shouldn't be any kind of a surprize to any of us from all of the corruption that's went on here for so many years. So many businesses have been run out of town or had to shut down because of these greedy mindless people that it's ridiculous.Do they care? Not as long as they can make money off of it.
Alright,we have a new Mayor so the whole town should stand behind her 100% to make this a better place no matter what.We all should take the attitude that we want our town back to where it once was.A good and decent to live and work in like it use to be.
Thanks Baffled

I agree with you! Personally, I feel that Portsmouth hit Rock Bottom on Nov.2nd. and after the election on Nov.3rd we started the climb back up. The people in this area now have HOPE and working together we will make a difference.

Hopefully, our newspaper and one of the local radio stations will stop their crude remarks and try to help make Portsmouth a place that we can be proud of.

Thanks again Baffled! WORKING TOGETHER--WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

With hope comes determination and with those comes change. Which in turn makes things to begin to happen for the better. Portsmouth now has what you might call a kick in the butt and for the people to wake up and come together as a whole. Things may look bad now,but look at it this way. If our forefathers did it and made this town into something. There is no reason why we can't do the same thing, only make it better and make them proud of us. We won't just be doing it for ourselves, but we'll be doing it for our children and grandchildren. We'll be giving them something to them to be proud of and to be remembered for generations to come. We're not in a hopeless situation by no means as some might think. All that has to be done is put any differences aside, everyone come together as a whole community, and everyone working together as one. That's what our forefathers did and look what they accomplished. There's no reason under this GOD given earth why the same thing can't be done again.
It's time for everyone here to get up,put our pride back where it belongs, and take the incentitive to put our town back to where it once was only better.

A person of exceptional intelligence who was once a professor at Shawnee State told me that the local newspaper is comparable to the KKK newsletter. The paper, the realtors, and the government officials are merely going with the flow in order to excel their careers. Well, stand up for yourselves. Quit kissing a$$ in order for advancement and do the right thing. Portsmouth is never going to be a rich gated community. Let's give our children the opportunity to grow up in a place they can be proud of, not a town eroded with houses that are empty because they were meth houses and empty businesses that have went out due to lack of community support. If you have a job, consider yourself lucky. Let government know that we need more employment opportunity here, not more college housing. To anyone needing a job, community action is offering testing this thursday, November the 19th, to hire for the census that is getting ready to begin. It starts at 9:30 in the morning and lasts until approximately 11:30. Go try and good luck. Hopefully together we can pull this once proud city out of its current degradation. As we are remembering all of those wonderful memories of the way it used to be in Portsmouth (I liked Mack's; thanks again to WalMart), lets remember our neighborhood churches that are also suffering. Remember those wonderful old buildings that were built by the people who started this town are being torn down because the small congregations that still support them can't afford to pay their bills.

Daily Horoscope for December 16

Cancer

Today's New Moon in your sixth house reminds you not to neglect your health or general well-being. It's the ideal time to arrange a check-up with your doctor or dentist, or to follow up a medical query. Cancerians love yummy food, and the festive season is hardly the best time to start a diet, but you still might want to monitor your calorie intake.
