Over the past 10 to 15 years, this town has lost so many businesses. It's especially depressing to lose the smaller places that give variety to a small town atmosphere. Well here is my list. Which ones do you miss?
Hermanns Meats, Massies Supermarket, MarketPlace, Richards News, Foodland, H&L Greens, Big Bear, The Nearly New Shop, Dreamland Pool, Heilig Meyers, The Record Shop, Toy Town, Big Top Malt Shop, Martings, Wolfes Clothing, The old acessable Kroger, KFC, Spuds, The Burger Barn, so many....

Well homesick all of the ones mentioned on here so far and others are dearly missed by alot of us. Not counting all of the other businesses that used to be on Chillicothe St. and down on Second St.down by the Market Square that have disappreared. Many favorites has went to the wayside and still unless something is done to stop all this corruption in town, there will be more disappear. It's not only a SHAME,but a DISGRACE to the community and town as well. We once had a town that we all could all be proud of when someone asked,Where are you from? Now when asked we try to avoid to answer mainly of embarrasment.
This town has lost way too much because of lousy management, selfish, and greedy people thiking of only of themselves. This town at one time had alot to offer to bring in new businesses and employment. Now look at it what businesses we had that has moved out and went to nearby communities. While others totally shut down and moved out of state. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT OUR SO-CALLED CITY OFFICIALS AND MAYOR RIGHT THERE? NOT A WHOLE LOT OF ANYTHING DOES IT. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CONCERN FOR OUR CITIZENS? OUT THE WINDOW-GONE. Why did the industries that we once had leave? Why can't we get any new industiries here? The answer is from our present and past city leaders that didn't give a rat's rearend about our town ,thinking only of themselves. So now we are at rock bottom, but it's not too late to change things and put Portsmouth back on the map. True it's going to take alot of hard work, but it can be done with new city officials that are willing to work for the people and the community to bring some pride back into the city. With true and honest dedication we can rise back up from the bottom where we are right now to where we once were before. A thriving and properous town and a place to be proud of again.

I miss the sundry store, it smeeled good!! I miss abies on eighth street,oh and the ymca that was alot of fun, i miss the donut shop, yeah I know it's still there but it's not the same, I miss going downtown with my mom and granny, that was so much fun, my kids got to do it but portsmouth closed when they were so little I doubt they remember much of it, I'm glad someone put this on here, it made me think of the hamburger inn and I'm gonna go get me some burgers and bean soup today, it's one of the few places in town I'm willing to eat, I try to only go to locally owned restaurants, i hate macdonalds!!!! and dont get me atarted on walmart, lol, I miss the store at the corner of robinson and lincoln, I cant recall the name of it, it was like stepping back in time, I miss the whole neighborhood that oberlings ate, there were alot of nice people down there, sometimes I feel like someone is trying to erase my childhood, so much that was good about our town is gone, oh another thing I miss even though I'm too old for it now, is cruising on chillicothe st.

My parents were born in the 50's and they often talk about all the businesses that used to be around here, and how Chillicothe Street used to be. I am so disappointed that the only way I have ever been able to see how boomimg this town used to be is through pictures.

I was raised out in the county & we came to town at Christmas..no matter the weather. We would park in the municipal parking lot on 4th st. and walk to all the shops. This was such an exciting time.Snow blowing around & people everywhere. Right on the corner of 4th & Chillicothe st. was a big booth with Santa in there ringing the bell. It was fun to go in Martings and ride the escalator. They also would wrap your gifts you bought..that was such a nice service they provided. I agree with you about Walmart. I have been there once since they opened and wont go back. It's not hard to see why we have no small businesses left. If they do get up and going they don't last long. They simply can't compete. They say the Walmart of the future will have Drs. Offices in them and anything else you could possibly think of. I know the Government stepped in and stopped Bill Gates from monopolizing the computer industry...why can't they see what this "warehouse of blood" has done to our economy? Anyway, I shop the pharmacys for small gifts like make-up and perfume. I go to J.C. Pennys for clothes. Groceries come from a grocery store. Hardware store for technical difficulties. Toys usually big lots. Electronics I shop around...usually out of town. I will go to Kmart occasionaly. There are other roads that don't lead to Walmart...if people will just use them.

me too, i shop every where but walmart, there are local business's you just have to drive a little more to shop, but it's not as big a hassle as trying to shop at walmart, i cant find a thing in there and I have a bad back so walking a country mile does not appeal to me,i told my daughter last year that i would give her fifty bucks if she could find one plastic thing there that wasnt made inchina. i still have my money, she could not find one thing there that was not made in china, check out walmart at afl-cio.org

I am one on the list who lost my business in portsmouth. I own Accurate Mobile Signing & Abstracting and was located at the Masonic Temple Building in Portsmouth. The area had taken such a dramatic downturn last year that I had to relocate the business to Kentucky. It's saddening to see a town that was once thriving now look destitute.

Yes i to miss all of the business that use to be in Portsmouth. The city use to look so nice and homes were very well maintained. Now much of the town is rentals, which are not fit for anyone to live. There are several landlords in town that the city needs to come down on and make them tear the building down. These homes makes the city look soooo nasty and poor. Just because we don't have a lot of jobs and business don't mean that our city should let these landlords rent homes in poor condition. Some don't even have a source of heat.

I'm surprised CDG is still even operating. It's such a scam. My ex-husband used to be over one of them.
