Went to my first show there the other day ("Spamalot"). Good thing I saw the show already in Houston at the Hobby Center a few years ago and London four years ago. It's really a great show. Couldn't tell from this place. It looks like a big concrete box with cheap plastic seats. No flair on the inside. I understand it was renovated in 2004, so I can't imagine what a dump it was before. The poor actors had to bring the show in closer because the stage wasn't big enough. And the girl who got up during the part of the play where something is planted supposedly in the audience. All she could do is look down and keep playing with her hair. Thanks for illustrating the literacy and class of this town, forgettable chick. It will take a majorly awesome show to get me to go to that piece of crap venue again. And do they seriously intend to keep on calling it the Selena Auditorium? That name doesn't exactly trip off the tongue, know what I mean. And if it's all about preserving her memory. think how ridiculous it's going to sound in 100 years when nobody remembers who she was. And if you disagree, ask any of these young girls who idolize Selena to explain the Angela Perralta theater in Mazatlan. Time marches on, and people need to change.

And "Wow" is yet another example of the class in this city. I wonder if he/she has ever been to a real theater in Houston, New York, or London? Then he/she would know what I'm talking about when I say that it is not really an acceptable venue for touring Broadway shows. The seats are cheap, the bar could use improving, they gave the poor sellers some little table to try to sell merchandise from the play, and the program was so cheap, the cover was in black and white. I don't know...maybe that's all they could afford. But I paid more for my seat here than I did in London to the same exact show, and I really felt cheated by the venue.

Ok Zach I'm sure you know broadway and I believe you when you claim to have been to New York, London etc.... But this is corpus Christi you idiot. What else did you expect? You are an idiot for even thinking you could recreate some great experience you wish you could have over and over again. But I hate to break it to you Zach, you have to go to New York or London etc.....to come on here and complain on topix is pointless and shows you have way too much time on your hands, or are just a loser.....either way you are SOL

Why can't there be a great theater, or show, experience? Do you mean to insinuate that the Corpus area is incapable of such a thing? Why? Do you mean the populous can't appreciate such a fine affair? I believe that's exactly what he was referring to, in-the-first-place. It's simple; simpletons will never chase such fine things; they will be happy with Shanty-Town entertainment. In other words, the local uneducated folk don't know what good entertainment really means. Unless, of course, you advertise it as "Tejano", then they're all over it. Racist? Nah; just a sad fact.

You guys have been busy! My original post was really talking more about the theater experience here and how it could be improved. I wrote an editorial for the CC Times a few years ago after visiting here. It made the front page, and the editors of CC Times even included a photo to go with it. The article was about how Corpus has so much potential and is not being utilized the way it should be. It's as if the people of Corpus don't really want anything nice and will settle for "adequate" when they could have "fantastic." The things I mentioned (the seats being cheap and uncomfortable and the program cover not even being in color) were things that would be considered unacceptable for that kind of show. Come on...even the Aurora Theater has color programs and comfortable seats! And as for Selena-bashing. Nothing against her. I've mentioned in other posts that what happened to her was horrible and she had the beginnings of a great career outside of this small area and would have been a great crossover artist. And before you bash me and call me racist, I've had two long-term relationships with hispanics and a lot of my cousins last names end with an "a" or a "z." The problem is that the people of Corpus have hitched their wagon to her as a source of fame for the city and don't seem to want to grow beyond that. When she was killed, I spent the summer in Mexico (as I always did), and when I got there, I asked my Mexican friends what they thought about her death. All they said was "who's that?" My reference to the Angela Perralta theater in Mazatlan was trying to show you an example that naming something after an, at that time, famous person could backfire, because who today knows who Angela Perralta was? Unless, of course, you decide to go to the internet and look her up and then pretend later on in a post that you knew who she was all the time. Also, for marketing value, the very name Selena Auditorium doesn't work. It has too many syllables and sounds laughable to anyone who is not from here and knows her story. I'm not saying that Selena herself was laughable. I'm saying that the name of the venue doesn't sound right because, as I said in my previous post, it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue easily. So, if you are happy to leave things as they are and are content to always say "this is Corpus, what do you expect?' then I feel sorry for you. I personally believe the city can be much greater than what it is, and providing excellent performance space for a touring Broadway show is just one example.

Dear Umm,
You didn't read the post about how I think Corpus has a lot of potential and can be greater than it is right now? I was born in this area. I went to Del Mar and finished my degree at TAMCC. I moved to Houston. I worked. I retired early. I decided to come back to the area to spend time with elderly relatives before they're gone. I paid cash for a condo in a high-rise where I can look at the ocean, watch the sailboats on Wednesdays, and watch the bridge change colors at night. I can buzz around town in the sports car I paid cash for. I have no bills except for my HOA, cell phone, and car insurance. It's a good life. I believe in this city. I remember as a little kid going downtown to shop and my mother buying all our clothes at Lichtenstein's. I remember the end of the glory days of this city. I think it can be great again. But if people allow things to continue to stay mediocre and the news makes a big deal out of a Subway and a cash store going in a new plaza next to the new Wallmart where Parkdale Plaza used to be, then I realize we have a long way to go. But we can get there. We have to stop accepting what is just ok or just average and want better for ourselves. It's part of the human condition. Revisit Maslow. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Zach went to Del Mar because both his parents died when he was a teenager and he was busy putting himself through school working three part time jobs, paying for his own apartment with no roommate, and getting a four-year degree in three years, all without the help of either financial aid or student loans. And yes, Zach did get some scholarship money, but it was not enough to cover a full ride to one of the better universities; however, Zach's test scores were high enough that he didn't have to take any English classes for his first two years at what you deem to be a lowly community college. Then when Zach moved to Houston to work, Zach got another degree from U of H. Zach was able to retire in his 40s, pay cash for a condo in a high-rise, pay cash for a sports car, and vacation in Mexico and Europe whenever he feels like it. Zach's reported IQ is 136, which is fairly high.
I'm sorry if I'm saying things in my posts that are offending your sensibilities, but what exactly are you having such a problem with? Was it my reference to Maslow? If you don't know who he was, look him up. So, if I follow you, the people in Corpus do not deserve better venues, we shouldn't expect better for ourselves, and we should rest all of our laurels on one dead entertainer (no offense, Selena fans)?

btw Selena fans. I really do like her music. What I don't agree with is having any one person set up as an icon as the be-all and end-all definition of a city. That makes it seem like there is nothing else here to offer. Put it in perspective. Marilyn Monroe was popular. She's considered an icon. No one gets offended if someone else says "I didn't like her acting" or "she became more famous after she was dead." Or anyone else set up as an icon, for that matter, such as Elvis Presley, James Dean, Rudolph Valentino (who, you ask? Exactly.) Yet people were crushed when he died, and it was reported that some women committed suicide when they heard of his death. He was that important. Who cares now?

People in other parts of the country talk about how people in Corpus Christi have a chip on their shoulder. I didn't believe them. I guess it's really true.
So no one can come up with a valid reason why people of Corpus shouldn't expect better? No wonder the City Council has such a stranglehold on things around here. People let them get away with too much because of low self-esteem, it seems. Or voter ignorance. Or they don't vote at all.
I'm guessing that the negative remarks to my post are from:
A. The architect who designed the space to begin with or had a hand in the remodel. I understand if that's the case and if so I apologize. Architects' plans are consistently being compromised. "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" is one of my favorite movies, so I get it, if that's the case, and I understand you probably had nothing to do with the selection of the cheap uncomfortable seats on the inside, among other things.
B. Someone around my age or so who still has to work for a living. They had to make a crack at Del Mar, so I suppose either they went to a better university or didn't go to college at all. Sorry...I invested well and retired early. Anyone could do the same. Don't be jealous. It's all about education.
C. A member of the Quintanilla family or a rabid supporter. My Mexican friends who live here and can see BOTH sides of an issue told me that the family was very greedy and was trying to keep her name alive at all costs, because she was their cash cow. I didn't believe my friends when they said it, but they claim it's true. I don't know about that. I do know that my friends were involved with that recording studio (?) that used to be at Six Points and were around at the time. I'll have to ask them for more info. This was just something they said in passing to me a few years ago.
D. Someone who can't wrap their head around the fact that I'm a white guy with Mexican friends and relatives who isn't racist and votes Democrat.
E. Someone who never studied Maslow (lol)
F. Someone who has lived in this area all his/her life and has never really been anywhere else. And going to Alice doesn't count.
So...if the reason you are so upset isn't about any of the above, then explain to me again WHY you don't want better for the city you live in?

Why would I pay all that interest? Why buy something on credit when I don't need to? I don't believe in buying ANYTHING on credit anymore. If I don't have the money handy, I just don't buy it. These people who finance and refinance and live beyond their means are part of the reason we got into this mortgage crisis mess to begin with.
I'm not looking at the place I bought as an investment. I was looking at it as a place where I wanted to live. If I choose to sell later and if I make money on it, fine. I won't owe a bank anything. If I die here, I'll leave it to a relative or friend. It's wonderful not having any bills except my HOA which covers all utilities, my car insurance, and my cell phone bill. Everything is free and clear. That allows me to put around $1000 a month into my savings. So explain to me why exactly do I need a mortgage? Are you a pissed-off realtor who is upset because you didn't get enough commission off of something or someone who is pissed-off because Schlitterbahn is moving into your backyard?
