Homeless People To Be Counted Tonight In Middlesex County

Reminds me of the Christmas Bird Count only a month later.

"Ok, all single homeless to the right, please. All married homeless couples, to the left, please. All others; gay couples, senior citizens, bankers, straight ahead."

I find it difficult - disgusting actually, how someone can rationalize making a crack about this story and the fact during a cold winter, some people don't have basic shelter.

Contrary to popular belief, most homeless did not become so out of choice and not because they are lazy, stupid, or immoral. Many homeless people are victims of abuse in the form of neglect and abandonment by their parents or other caregivers. Some of them are simply victims of life’s tragedies, such as hurricanes, fires, or other catastrophes from which they simply don’t have the resources to recover. I always give them a dollar or two for the privilege of photographing them. I am often surprised by their cheerfulness and sense of pride. Often, they will show themselves to have some kind of talent. There is a fine line between genius and insanity.

How do they differentiate between the real homeless people that really need and should get the help, and the imported ones bussed in to inflate the numbers?

It's amazing how some of us can sit by our computers, in our warm homes, and make derogatory comments on the homeless. Correction: embarassing, not amazing.
