porterville girl wrote: I hear the reason they can't offer wellness checks is that most of the vets in the area don't want anything to do with them! thats not true, i first hand know that lately over the last few months that several of their dogs have been seen by at least 3 of the porterville vets and that the vet has a pretty much open door anytime of day for the dogs that need vet care.

i know that porterville in the past has had negative things against them, but they have been making alot of changes for the better on behalf of the animals and i believe that you will see the changes if you start paying attention. they really care about the animals!

Porterville Shelter is still a mess, not treating dogs for illnesses, don't know where dogs are when rescue groups try to get them out and bring them into rescue. What is up with that? You folks in Porterville ought to demand better for the strays/animal turn-ins in your area. Please take a stand!

I took a dog from that shelter last week that was so sick with an upper respiratory infection he had to be hospitalized for 3 days and is still sick, but in my care. He came in stinking and filthy and in a condition that would warrant investigation of the facility and the staff. Additionally, they had another dog there that I said I would take and they lost track of this dog. How do you lose a dog??!! Anyway, by the time they figured it out we had to drive 5 hrs back one way to get this other dog they threatened to destroy. When he was brought out of the shelter, he was dripping in urine and guess what?...he too has a nasty URI. It's a sad day when you have to "rescue" a dog from a shelter because the conditions are so deplorable. Who's policing the dog police? There should be an agency in charge to hold shelters like this one accountable. Neglect is a form of cruelty no matter who does it. Shame on you Porterville....

The Grand Jury can go in and do a report. They can recommend the shelter make changes or be closed down. The Humane Society Of The United States often goes in and does reports. Try PETA. I know they have a bad rep lately, but they have done a LOT of good.

If anyone has anything to report about animals in this shelter please post! We need to be the voice for these animals and help to reform the shelter.

I for got to say that the best way to get things done is for someone to go in and take pictures of the conditions of the shelter. Pretty much an undercover operation.

Ya the staff worked really hard and did an amazing job to get as many of the animals out before the shelter shut down. Good for them.
