It probably started the next year or so.. I know there never was a school closing for anything that I remeber even the biggest snows.

Back then school usually started around the first part of August, went for about 4 weeks, then let out for about 6 weeks to pick cotton--if I remember right. I never could pick very much cotton so I didn't make much money, but I really loved those days. A lot of good memories for me.

Goose Bumps wrote: Maybe it was because I was just a teenager back then and didn't know any better, but I think people were generally most relaxed and happy in those days. I loved the smell of gins in the fall, I think we had about five of them. Now there is one. Hard to believe things have "progressed" so far. Do you remember Blanchards Cafe and how good the hamburgers smelled cooking even when standing outside? Would make you hungry. Then there was the hot tamale man. I can't remember his name. It was Yogi Briggs granddad. Man were they good. Of course we also had a few beer places on main street too back then. Weekends they were pretty busy! Was never in one, but they could get a little loud at times. LOL. The hot tamale man could of been Ralph Howard. He had a son named Larry that would be about 55 years old now.

No, it wasn't Ralph Howard. He also sold hot tamales also, but in later years. He was Yogi Briggs grandfather.

Hey Anonymous, Ralph was my uncle. Which one of the boys did you graduate with? Bob, Jerry, Truman or Larry? You may know my mother since they are first cousins and she is a year older than Jerry.

I haven't seen her. I called her a couple days ago and she told me about it. I told her she should have let me know and I would have been there for her. You know your mom. Miss Independent soul she is. We don't get to see each often, but when we do get to talk, in person or by phone, we talk a long while trying to get caught up. We are going to try to start having lunch together about once a month with another close friend - the one who lives across from your grandmother.

Anonymous wrote: Does anyone remember (the airport) that was out on Old 61? It was just North of Muse's garage on the West side of Old 61. One of the Fullers I think it was C C, bought a Cessna and took off and landed there and had a quonset hut hanger to keep the plane in. Anyway, he was out flying and it came up a thunderstorm and when he came in to land the front wheel caught in the mud and flipped over on it's top. I don't remember if he got hurt or not. Then a little later I think Jame Muse bought a bi-plane. At least I think it was James. Don't remember if it was him for sure though. Anyway whoever owned it kept it there also. I dont't remember the airport, but I do remember James Muse and his son(Henry) bought a wrecked plane from Ray Gene Harris about 1979-80. They fixed it up real nice and gave it a great paint job.

Didn't Mr. Charles Penman have a plane years back? Maybe it was his air strip.

I looked on the site that Abdal gave and it did give Mr. Penman as the owner. All I know is that CC Fuller was the first to have a plane on the place I knewas the "airport" back then and later on I think it was James Muse bought a double winged job and had it there. I guess it was Jame Muse, at least that what I was told back then.
