in the early early 70's, I found out from a friend of mine that you could go into Segal's and get cigarettes....no questions asked (and for only 32 cents a pack). Well, one day I went in there, and picked out six packs of various brands, laid them on the counter. Abe Segal just stared at me with that cigar hanging out of his mouth. It seemed like an eternity. Then he just calmly rang it up. I gave him two bills, and hustled out of there. Does anyone remember Segals and Barkovitz stores?

I remember Segals, you could get a mean pair of bell bottoms there. It seemed like it took half the school year for them to break in.

What about Mars, Sterlings, Ben Fanklin, Jan's Cafe. Wasn't there a store called Hamra's or something like that? There was also a clothing store across the street from the police station what was that called?

I remember.......
Hamra's was the store across from the police station ( Western Auto is there now).
Marr's was where Crafton's Florist is now. Ben Franklin was where Southern Elegance's new addition is now. I don't remember Jan's..could it have been across the street next to Segal's . I remember on Saturday night you couldn't get a parking place on Main Street. The stores stayed open until 9-10 o 'clock at night..This was during the late 60's. Do you remember Cook's? They had a jewelry/watch repair, soda fountain and Mrs. Carlotta Cook had a beauty shop in the back.
You could get a marshmallow Pepsi or a cherry Coke there.

I remember Segals store. It was just down the street from the original Western Auto which belonged to my parents. My folks bought most of our clothes there. Then there was Workman's Drug next door to the west and the little restaraunt a few doors down from there. I think it was called the City Pig if memory serves me. There was the Rexall drug store directly across from the Western Auto which had the soda fountain and a coke was a nickle. A cup of coffee at the Pig was a dime and a pack of cigarettes was a quarter. I usually made a dozen trips a day to the Pig for coffee and cigarettes for my old man. I can't exactly remember where Barkovitz's store was. I read a lot of comic books at Workmans during the early '50s. I would stay there for hours and they never said a word to anyone about it. Once in a while, I'd read the comics at Butlers, but they didn't seem to like people hanging around and not buying anything.

I may be a little younger than this crowd because I don't remember all of those places. I do have great memories of being in my Grandparent's shoe store in the late-70's and then she had a dress shop across the street for many years in the 80's. I remember being a kid in the 80's during the video game craze and I'd go into Reid's Pool Hall for pool and games. I also remember being warned not to go into V.T. Rodger's (name correct?) shoe store alone, that was across the street, for some reason...not sure why? I always remember that 10 cent horse ride outside his store.

Yeah I remember Cooks, that was a cool place I remember going to the back and getting a fountain sodas. I guess Jan's was The Pig but it was a little diner that closed early on Main Street.

There was also a men's clothing store beside Hamra's I can't recall the name.

Anyone remember Fisher's Early Bird Doughnuts and Edgar's Supermarket.

The City Pig was the name of the diner.(Jan's ??)
The Country Squire was the name of the men's store. Mrs. Nell Henderson had a ladies shoe/clothing store that is where Southern Elegance is now. I remember when Butler's was the corner drug store across the street from where it is now. It belonged to Mr. Leeds Butler. There was also a soda fountain in there.(This was way back in the 50's !!).
Workmans Drug store is where Patty Silman's gift shop is now. Mr. Farheity Pinkley had a drug store on down the street. Edward's had one there later on. It was right next to Dr. Barnes' dental office was..just next to Dr. Boyd's. I think Trader Dick or Staffords maybe in there now.
Does anyone remember the post office being on Main Street ?? IGA or it may have been a Kroger ??( Noffels owned this) was also on Main Street about where the library.(Like this was also way back in the 50's).

I was born in 73 and remember the grocery store on Main St. across from Johnsons. I don't remember much more being on Main but I'll always remember the horse in front of Rogers shoe store and him selling chickens and ducks at Easter. I also remember another shoe store where Southern Elegance is and a place called Little Darlings where Craftons is now. You could buy brand name clothing there.
Please keep this post going as I love reading about the soda fountains and what it used to be like here!

There was a Mosby's hardware store also. It was on the opposite side of Main Street. This was way before L & S hardware. Do you remember where the library was ? Down on the west end of Main street by Staffords. It was tiny...
THe post office was also on Main Street.
What about the old Shannon Theatre. Satuday and Sunday afternoon matinees. There was also a theatre on Main Street. It was in the area just next to Western Auto..maybe down a few stores.
What about The Trading Post that Mr. Paul and Mrs Dulcie Combs had?
This was before they had the Daisy Queen (The Daisy Queen is where Gators is now.)

My mom went into Marrs every now and then....back then, it was condidered an "up-scale", expensive place. Ben Franklin dime store was a hang out for kids. Hamra's was where my mom took me to buy about 80% of my clothes. The others were bought in Sikeston at Falkoffs.

Cooks....definitely. Mr. Bill cook was the watch repair guy, and Carlotta had a beauty shop in the back. The soda fountain was great. Danny cook would treat me for a free cherry phosphate from time to time. I think it was on the corner wasn't it?

Busby's hardware had the main part (with a huge inventory of lawn mower and small engine parts in the back). The side part was full of toys, and if us kids went in there to look, a lady always had her eye on us. Then.....Whittaker-Ace hardware was cool, but does anyone remember when it burned one night? There were more people on the street watching it burn than showed up at the soybean queen parade !!!! Someone was even selling doughnuts ! Sterlings was built on top of Whittaker Ace, and was built using the same bricks from the burned building.

Speaking of Raymond Davidson, wasn't he the city Marshall at one time, before Joe Moore???

Being a kid and going into Whitacres was trouble. They had so much to get into and get in trouble with. I remember when Whitacres burned. They sold dynamite and when they pulled it out of the store and put it out on the street someone loaded it up and took off with it. No one ever found out who did it.

The bank and several other buildings near the railroad tracks burn several years later. I recall seeing piles of melted coins laying on the floor after the fire was out.

I don't recall Raymond Davidson but I do remember my dad talking about him. I also remember when the post office was on main street just down from the City Pig. Staffords was west down the street from there and then there was the library and Barnes' dentist office. Trader Dicks was the last store on that block and Claude Foster's IGA was kitty corner across from Trader Dicks.

Wynnes was the Rexall drug store directly across from my dad's Western Auto store. I was sitting at the counter drinking a nickle fountain coke the day Kennedy was assasinated. They had a radio playing and the program was interrupted by a news bulletin stating that the President had just been shot. It just happened to be the same day as my mother's birthday...November 22.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
