I passed by the town of Portageville on Friday Dec. 9th, 2011 and ate at the Wendy's at the junction of I-55 and 162 Hwy. While eating I looked up and to my horror, I saw our U.S. Flag flying next door at the Phillips 66 / Ash's Auto sales TOTALLY FADED, TORN AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN DOWN N O W !!! I had asked the people working to tell the owner to please take the flag down. On the way back from our short trip, stopped backed by on Dec. 10th and again requested the flag be taken down. PLEASE could the good citizens nearby see that this flag is taken down and destroyed properly?
Thank You.

I'm sorry, it may have been the McDonalds (fast food place), However, the location of the flag is next to the Sonic O.K.?

Phillips 66 and Ash's Auto Sales. I'm just asking the flag be taken care of please.

"Ragged Old Flag"
by Johnny Cash

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there.
I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town".
I said, "Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that's a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it".
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down,
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town"
I said, "I think it is"
He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing "Say Can You See"
It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

"On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.
She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they've about quit wavin' back here at home
in her own good land here She's been abused,
She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,
But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in.
Cause she's been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don't let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I'm mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag"

I contacted the Portage Police Dept. and they assured me they will follow up on the desicreted flag flown in the city of Portageville.

As far as the previous comment of worring about the flags flown in K.C., just as a citizen if I EVER see a flag that should not be flown (torn, ripped and faded)anywhere in our great land I will always go out of my way to ask if it could be removed and disposed of properly.

It was apparent to me this flag has been flown for quite some time without attention. This is a respect thing in my mind.

Merry Christmas to all and God Bless You.

If you get a moment, please read the US Flag Code link attached. It is very clear what to do with a "worn flag".

I appreciated the Johnny Cash story, however I really believe this particular flag flown, the story does not apply.

http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf...

Copy and paste the link above to your browser and you can read the entire official U.S. Flag Code.

All I can do is request not to fly a desicrated flag.

Thank You-

Thank you for being concerned. I too cringe when I see a flag disrespected by the condition in which it is flown. Unfortunately, many folks do not realize the need to replace our nation’s flag when it is in poor condition. Again, thank you for making note of this disgrace. We are not all a bunch of illiterate rednecks here in Southeast Missouri that are ignorant of how a flag should be flown. The people making the ignorant comments above will be the first ones to go nuts and demand a lynching when some whacko burns the flag or does something equally disrespectful.

the day I'm told what I can and can't "fly" on my property in terms of our country's flag is the day that "flag" means nothing.

My military father's WWII flag is old and tattered due to time, and it STILL flies in our yard. If it were replaced with a store shelf one, it wouldn't be the same.

Everyone has their own opinions.

I went to the store owner over a flag he was flying last year and told him he needed to replace it.
So this is not the first time he has been asked to respect our flag.
The owner might respect a flag from his country.

Respect his right to be left alone. You don't know his story so don't judge. Sometimes people look, say, and do things for reasons that don't seem right or proper to others. Until you've walked a mile....

I believe that you are correct and I agree that the flag should be taken down and disposed of in the way it is supposed to be, burnt, but with much respect. However I think you should have mentioned that it should also be replaced with another American flag. I, too, get upset at the disrespect of our flaf, because disrespect of the flag is disrespect of our great country. Merry Christmas to you also, and thank you for your service.

I haven't noticed the flag but I would assume if it's in that bad of condition it was probably left there from the last owner. The new owners have really let the whole business run down.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Sagittarius

Relationships have been going through through testing times since the Solar Eclipse at last month's New Moon in Gemini on May 20. Events may force you to reevaluate the state of a partnership. You may even decide that you need to make some major adjustments if things are to carry on as you would like. During the coming fortnight leading up to the rare second New Moon in Gemini, this may feel like a crisis, but that doesn't mean you should abandon all hope or throw out the baby with the bathwater.
