I cannot believe that people in town will allow such a lame excuse of an ordiance to further run their children off their own streets. As little as there is to do in our town cruising is about the only thing to do after 8:00 and I for one would rather know my teenager is in town cruising than somewhere else. I guess this isn't convenient for our city officials. And they wonder why Portageville is not growing? If you do not treat your youth as a treasured commodity then you cannot expect to keep any of them here. If they are not wanted and ran off while teenagers why would they want to make this their home and a home for their children in later years. I really found the "practice of cruising has anegative impact on the health, safety and economic welfare of the community." to be questionaable. WHose health and welfare not our youth--maybe someone will have to get off their butt and go to work from 8p.m.-8am. I am all for a curfew for our teenS but I don't think 8:00 will be a good time to expect them to go to bed and if they are not cruising then what will they be doing--SOMETHING GOOD FOR THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY ACCORDING TO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS? THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!

It isn't Main Street that needs the monitoring- it's the alleyways and out at the river and down the dirt roads- where our young people are being beaten to a pulp and left to die!!!!!!!!!! THIS is the kind of stuff that needs to be addressed. Just riding isn't harming anyone (unless it's paying for that TOO HIGH gas!!!) and I too would rather know my daughter is crusing the Main Street where she can at least be seen if she needs help. The priorities aren't in the right place.

I remember crusing main street 20 years ago. There is nothing wrong with children doing it today. It keep teens out of trouble and off the back roads. What is wrong with the citizens of Portageville????

This is a subject that needs to be seriously addressed at a city meeting. It is crazy to think that no one will be crusin' the streets after 8 PM. IT'S SUMMER TIME FOR PETE'S SAKE.

Other towns have tried this and what they discovered was that it just ran the kids out into the country so you didn't know who was doing what. At least when they're in town, they're easy to keep an eye on and its easy to tell the troublemakers from kids just being kids.

Please tell me our city leaders and police officers would rather see our kids cruisin' the loop, stopping to socialize, BUYING GAS, SODAS, SNACKS, MCDONALDS FOOD rather that having to run to the outskirts or the river just to get out of the house and be able to be with their friends. Heck, some of these kids are just getting their drivers licenses. You'd think they would WANT them uptown where they would be less likely to find harm!!!!!!!!

The folks that signed this ordinance must not care about Portageville's young people. There is nothing in town to do anyway, there is nothing to offer. What are they trying to do get our kids into drugs and drinking, because there is enough of that out there already. I feel our kids will turn to these bad influences if left with nothing to do. What were they thinking? This tops the list of major disasters for our so called town officials.

I don't believe the ordinance has actually been passed has it? I can't see the people of Portageville letting something so crazy be put in the city books.

Have done a little bit of research on the ordinance. It has been passed but it only covers a designated cruising control area, which if the description of that area is read it really only covers the 2 block area directly south of main street. I have heard a little rumor that this ordinance was put into place to control the cruising noise. Seems that there are a few loud pipes that rack off from time to time in this area. So the ordinance is not really as crazy as it has been made out to be. If people had respect for each others space like they used to we wouldn't have to pass such silly ordinances.

I noticed that in the newer housing areas of new madrid that they have posted noise ordinance signs too. if must be becoming a problem for other towns to post the same type things. I can see where the noise would be a problem- it's probably the earth-shaking systems they have installed to play their music making some of the noise too. Alot of people live on the far end of Maine Street.

It just goes to show that complaisancy allows these types of "ordinances" to pass. The couple who fought for this is operating a business in their home they couldn't dump after one of them lost their job. I went to the council meetings when they approached the city. There were no opponents fighting for our teenagers. Yeah I think if they get their way they will run all of our youth off and then what is Portageville. I mean an prior city council ran Plastene out of town over greed. Look what happened to main street. We are just one more "ordinance" from looking like Marston!

A bed and breakfast without the breakfast. And no, it is in a mixed zone, no rezoning required.
