A farmer and his neighbor sat on the front porch the farmer's old dog lay between them moaning. The neighbor asked, "What's wrong with your dog?" The farmer replied "He's laying on a nail." His friend asked "Why doesn't he get off the nail?", whereupon the farmer replied "I GUESS IT JUST DOESN'T HURT ENOUGH."
How much hurt will WE put up with here in Lewis County before WE get off the nail?? I hear people say "We can't do anything about it." My grandmother was right -- "Can't never could."
Don't tell people in California that. In 1974, California enacted Prop.13, they were damn tired of "laying on the nail." Property taxes were rolled back one year with a 1% cap per year.
Here, property assessments keep going up, just because it "MIGHT" sell for more money, even though it's not for sale. At Brantingham Lake a family built a home 30 or 40 years ago, and now their taxes have been raised to a level higher than their retirement. The assessors want to "bring their home in line" with newer, more expensive homes. Now their yearly taxes are more than it cost originally to build! AND they're being driven out! That's a CRIME!
I have a problem a system where WHAT YOU OWE for property taxes is BASED on the value THEY place on IT.. WE should not be penalized for making our property attractive by painting, adding siding, thermal windows, landscaping, etc. Instead of RAISING you taxes for improvements, they should be LOWERED since you are adding VALUE to Lewis County. Penalizing property owners for not keeping it in good condition instead.
Lewis County has a budget of over $41 million for 26,000 people. If the population doubled to 52,000 people, the tax burden SHOULD be reduced accordingly. As more homes go into disrepair and get sold at auction at pennies on the dollar, and the population up here dwindles, the tax burden per homeowner is increasing.
If that concept were applied to a speeding ticket or to buying groceries, what you owe would be based on what you earned. You get caught speeding and your ticket is $200, while your neighbor gets caught going the same speed, but because he makes less money, he only owes $15, you go buy groceries, it costs you $300, your neighbor gets the same groceries for $25. Is that fair?
I believe that the tax burden should be DIVIDED EQUALLY AMONG ALL RESIDENTS- homeowners and renters alike. If just half the residents in an area are homeowners, that half is paying for ALL the SERVICES for everybody else. That's wrong.
When Social Services is handing out welfare money (a HUGE chunk of the County budget), it's not THEIR money they're giving away. Much of it comes from the property owners.
Definition of "BUDGET" seems different for a homeowner than for a government agency. For me, a budget means "this is all we have to live on" and we have to learn to live on it. For a government agency, a "budget" means "we've got to milk the homeowners for more money."
Governments seems to be able to spend willy-nilly and then look to the taxpayer to shoulder the burden.
My suggestion is that somehow, somewhere, EVERYONE WHO LIVES IN THIS COUNTY ENDS UP PAYING EQUALLY for the budget, whether we RENT OR OWN a trailer, a one bedroom house, a big home -- WE ALL PAY.
I once heard a comedian say, in a joking fashion, that the new tax form would have just one line - "How much did you earn last year? OK, send it to us."
When are we going to APPLY enough PRESSURE to get
our representatives to start PROTECTING those of us who voted to put them in office?
ARE YOU READY TO GET OFF THE NAIL?? IS IT HURTING YOU ENOUGH YET???
What are your thoughts on the subject???

Hi there "time to move out", as you can all see we have another Coward with no Balls to sign their real NAME. It's because of thinking like YOURS that keeps New York having the distinct honor of being the highest taxed state in the entire U.S., along with having one of the highest poverty rates. I had truly hoped to spark some adult discussion in how other New Yorkers felt.

Mr Ray Jordan , It is aparent you are not happy with a government that taxes us to death. However your response to the blog how says its time to move is as uncalled for as the unfair tax practice you complain about. We all have a right to our own opinions and its not our place to speek of another mans genitals just because they have a different way of dealing. I for on am in agreement with you as I am very familliar with brantingham and other such areas that recieve unfair property tax. Still to accuse the blogger of haveing no balls is wrong and makes you no diferent then the oficials responciblefor the tax which you complain about. I have also read blogs of yours concerning other peoples propertues and the upkeep there. Ounce again you have the right to not like this but they have there rights as well. If they make their property look apealing to your eye their tax will go up as well! Further more A mans property is his and yours is yours. If you feel they should present their property as you see fit then you should be paying their tax as well. As for my name on this blog I choose to use the name you see not because I have no balls but because I am exerciseing my right to do so. If however you feel this means i fear you or anyone else let me asure you this is not the case. I feel this will reduce personal attacks which I do not deal well with. Anger should not be a motivation for anyone on these blogs. Keep in mind the complaints you bring to the table are lagid but you are not very good at gaining people to fight for the cause. Let your thoughts on the issue be your weapon not your feelings tward your neighbors. Oh and run for a government office it cant hurt!

i- think you're a jacka**

before E-veryone would think the same after reading this thread,

"except" would be the CORRECT spelling, not "accept" look it up,

after c-orrect your own spelling before you call someone stupid for their spelling.
